The weapon gets an enhancement bonus of +1 at every level. Does that mean that your weapon goes from being a +1 weapon at level 1 to a +2 weapon at level 2? And what of the special abilities? Does a Kensai's weapon get a special ability at every level? And what if you start off with a + 1 weapon before you even take the prestige class? Does a +1 Weapon become a +2 weapon at Kensai level 1?

I am so confused.

Help me.

The thing with a Kensai's weapon is that you enchant it. The table for the kensai's weapon states what the weapon's total abilities can be for that level of kensai. However, it doesn't go up automatically. You still have to enchant it, but I believe you only pay the xp cost.

The Kensai's "signature weapon" ability (as I believe it's called), works like an item creation feat except that you only pay an experience cost, not a gold cost. If you start with a masterwork weapon, you can enhance it to +1 at 1st level by paying the XP cost. At 2nd level, you can then enhance that weapon to +2 by paying the difference in XP costs between the one listed at 1st level and the one listed at 2nd. If you started with a +1 weapon before entering the class, you could enhance that weapon to +2 by paying the full XP cost listed for 2nd level.

If you wanted to have special abilities added to your weapon (such as flaming, holy et al), you can add those in the place of the appropriate enhancement. For example, you could have a +1 flaming greatsword instead of a +2 greatsword.

I think that should cover everything. Hope that helps.

Actually I beleive you pay the difference between the costs. For instance at 2nd level to get a MW weapon to a +2 weapon you pay 160xp. However to go from a +1 weapon to a +2 weapon you pay 120xp (160 to get +2 - 40 from being +1 already).
