Like, what's it do?

Does it involve ropes?

Spirits?

Glue?

Binders are a core class that summon and "bind" to themselves spirits called Vestiges.

Like spells, some vesitages can only be bound by someone of a certain level. These vestiges once "bound" to you give you various powers and abilities dependant on what vestige you choose to bind.

At later levels you can expell and bind new vestiages more quickly and bind more than one vestige at a time giveing you some unique combinations of powers.

Search Wikipedia for the word "goetia" -- that's the inspiration of the Binder. There's even a section there on the Tome of Magic.

(Most of the vestiges and all of the seals are actually drawn from Mather's 'work', if you can call it that. Those that aren't are old D&D iconic characters, such as Karsus (the mage behind the fall of Netheril and the death of the first Mystra in Forgotten Realms).)

Dirty black magic classes!

Are there good vestiges?

The class is not evil in itself, and the use of certain vestiges doesn't make the Binder more evil or good.

It's a nice class, and IMO the only one from ToM that has the right to exist as a base class. Adapting the Vestiges to the various campaign settings would be a pain in the behind, though.

Vestiges often exist beyond good and evil -- while they share names and seals with mythological princes of Hell, they are often completely rewritten to take into account D&D.

Binders aren't necessarily good or evil. Or even light or dark. They're just *creepy*.

Powerful Beings too stubborn to fully die, and the Binder is the Gatekeeper. You gain certin physical features depending on the Pact you made, at later levels you may hide them.
