| Nani?01-09-05, 05:37 PM | By core rules, no. But if you want to use it as a house rule it doesn't sound like a bad idea. If you want to make it mechanically/flavor wise different I suggest useing the Wizard Domains from UA as a sorcerer option. Understand, I'm suggesting this off the top of my head and have no idea how it would work balance wise. I would suggest they get the extra spell but not another spell per day. Perhaps make it a feat. This would alter the flavor of a "Specialist Wizard" vs "Sorcerer Specialist". All the Best, Nani? |

Wizards can specialize and get extra spell/spell level. The So5rceror has to give up two schools (granted he can't learn it all) Mechanically its still balanced. |
| CzarGarrett01-09-05, 08:17 PM | But the extra spells per day ups the sorcerer in power. Already they're casting more spells per day then a wizard, and now they have a way to have base spells per day + bonus spells + 1 for specializing? Plus flavor-wise, it seems wrong. Sorcerers are almost supposed to get random spells, not a set grouping of them. |

That is why I suggest they get one spell known for "specializing" but do not get to cast another spell each day. Also there is are feats that give more "spells known". Also there is a large contigent (me included) who feels the sorcerer is underpowered (please, let's not restart that that arguement again, I'll try only to talk flavor here). Plus flavor-wise, it seems wrong. Sorcerers are almost supposed to get random spells, not a set grouping of them. What? the best Sorcerers (flavor wise), seem to cluster around concepts/spell themes that have an internal logic. Look at the "Draconic" feats. Look at the Warlock, which many here would argue is nothing but a warmed over\gished out sorcerer with a built in background. Both of these push a "theme". Literature is filled with examples of people with inherent magic power. What does Merlin (demon blooded inborn magic in some versions/ druid in others) or Morgan Le Fay (of the Faires) say? What is Cassandra but a woman cursed with sorcerous (divination) power. Look at Harry Potter and ignore for a second that his training screams wizard. His inborn abliltes to speak with snakes and his potency over Voldemort comes from a magical "accident" that could easily be adopted as a Sorcerer origin. All the Best, Nani? |

Lets say you want to go with Ice/Cold theme- You'd take stuff from Evocation (definately), some necromancy, possibly some abujration and transmutation. Therefore you're not really specializing in a school, you're going with a theme of spells. |

It seems like I took you too literally when you said random. All the Best, Nani? |
| solbergb01-10-05, 12:19 PM | You can do it just with spells known (eg, don't choose anything but transmutations), but I find sorcerers are a lot more fun if you pick a theme and stick to it (at least with any spell bigger than a cantrip). Yeah, your version of "grease" might actually be smooth planes of force or miniature evard's tentacles that push away at anyone standing on the area instead of grabbing them, or ice or even mind control ("you WILL let go of that sword, you WILL fall flat on your butt"). But it still works like the PHB spell grease, is spellcrafted the same way, etc. Spell Thematics sadly didn't make it into the core rules but there isn't any reason not to add a bit of flavor to your sorcerer by claiming that all your spells fit a theme and trying to make them work that way. |
| Stuntman01-10-05, 01:02 PM | The closest thing to a specialised sorcerer is the war mage. I was thinking of a specialised sorcerer that is similar in mechanics to the war mage. The sorcerer would know every spell from one school of magic. Once every few levels, he may select a spell from another school that is one level lower than the highest level spell he can cast. Officially, the sorcerer cannot specialise. |
| StrahdVonZarovich01-10-05, 02:52 PM | Interesting concept indeed, Stuntman. |
| jsaving01-11-05, 10:45 AM | Let's be honest here -- sorcerers would barely notice the penalty from specialization because they receive so few known spells to begin with. So if you are going to let sorcerers specialize in the same way wizards do, you need to make that choice with your eyes open, understanding that it's a significant power boost for the sorcerer. Whether you see that as being good or bad depends on whether you agree with those who say the sorcerer is underpowered to begin with... |
