A while back I was reading a thread about someone wanting to make a green lantern class, that inspired me to want to make a class for my favorite super hero, CAPTAIN AMERICA!....

I was thinking something along the lines of Paladin of freedom but gaining abilites to using his shield as a weapon, maybe gaining vow of nonviolence as a bonus feat? If anyone knows of a class that specializes in using shields that I could tweak for this, that's be great. any other ideas for the concept are freely accepted.

Thank's for any imput (unless it's random banter!)

Fighter, Dex as prime stat, Str as secondary.

Shield Bash
Throw Anything
A Shield of Returning.
Point Blank Shot
Weapon Specialisation (Thrown Shield)
Weapon Focus (Thrown Shield)
Exotic Weapon Proficiency (Thrown Shield)

and invent something to allow you to use a small shield as a halfling skiprock.

Problem solved.

the only problem I see with that is that captain america doesnt strike me as chaotic good :P

No need. With Throw Anything and the right trick from Master Thrower, you'd be able to bounce your shield off people.

Cap would be a Fighter/Master Thrower/Legendary Leader.

Yeah, Cap would definately be LG. While he fights for Freedom, and the American Way and all that jazz, its that sort of Organized Freedom that the idealized US represents (if only in his mind).

Depending on the writer and universe, his lawfulness or goodness are a bit up for discussion.

The way Bendis writes him in The New Avengers, he's largely lawful, but has a knack for upsetting Black Ops US agencies by pulling some obscure rank on them that they have to respect. While not exactly chaotic, it was sorta out of left field and represents the more caddy side of Lawfulness.

In the Ultimate universe, hes a bit more jaded and was willing to play mind games with a weak mind (the Hulk) to have it decimate certain targets.

But with all that said 'n done, Paladin of Freedom would be a poor choice as the class doesn't represent him accurately, and on the basis that the Cap isnt chaotic.

Now a large part of his power, expierience aside, is the fact that he is not a typical Human, but rather an augmented human, who via a soldier serum, became the peak physical specimen of a human being that he is now.

And his Shield would be arguabely Adamantine.

How can the sheild NOT be adamantine? that would be disloyal to the character.

Really, though, I think to make Cap, because of his enhanced physical abilites, you'd need to make him his own template (maybe there's an existing one out there somewhere, but I can't think of it) to replicate the abilites.

And I don't think paladin (of any sort, although I agree he's not CG) fits Cap. The only paladin ability he really has is smite evil; but none of the rest of the stuff really fits him too well. Maybe just one level of paladin (to get smite) and then go fighter for the extra feats. And take Extra Smiting a couple times, too.

:D Tee hee. I love it that people are trying to build Marvel and DC characters. It's such a refreshing change from the normal glut of anime stuff on these boards.

Sounds like Paragon template to me.

I agree with the above posters, the Cap is no way chaotic.

maybe gaining vow of nonviolence as a bonus feat?Ok, I dont have the BoED, but I'm going to guess that Vow of Nonviolence disallows violence. And I'm pretty sure Cap beats the living hell out of people all the time.

And I mean all the time. Just walking down the street, sees a bad-guy, POW! throws a freaking shield into their face. Have you ever been hit in the face with a shield?! It freaking hurts! The shield would break your face! Sweet Pelor, that would be terrible.

Lets say Mr. Electro decides to turn over a new leaf, lead a good life, power a city or two, and enjoy a hot dog in the park. But all of the sudden, you got some huge dude beating your face in with a shield! No wonder everyone stays evil! If some guy threw a gaint shield into my face, I'd rob banks too...

Sigged.

I personally second a Human Paragon 3/Fighter Something/Master Thrower Something Else with a nice adamantine shield for the Cap.

Well, when I threw in the word "arguably" is because technically his shield is not Adamantine. Its not even the Marvel equivlant "Adamantium". No, it's actually some alloy that's a skosh weaker then adamantium called Vibranium.

That said, who knows what the exact statistics of Adamantium and Vibranium?
But yes, for DnD's purposes, Adamantine works.

Shouldnt he have some monk lvls? or maybe just IUS. I never read the comics but i played Marvel vs Capcom 2 and once you lose your shiled he becomes a pretty good unarmed combo guy.
Chimaera2000

He'd definitely have Improved Unarmed Strike, as that is the primary method of superhero combat besides using huge energy blasts. Perhaps one level of monk might work to allow him to not wear armor.

You don't have to be a Monk to use unarmed combat. In fact, Fighters are vastly better at it than Monks.

Perhaps one level of monk might work to allow him to not wear armor.
Cap's suit is actually chainmail. Not some alien, cosmic chainmail either. Just sojme metal and padding.
Darkwolf_childe

02-14-06, 01:26 AM
I figured the Cap's suit was more of an advanced Scale-mail. The shield would have to have the Returning quality.
Crovaxan

02-14-06, 02:49 AM
mithral scale mail would probably be best since Dex will be his primary stat. and IUS while lesser damage, your shield is your primary source of damage so then increased BAB is worht it. So woudl it be a fighter6/MasterThower5/Legendary Leader5.and then whatever u feel is pretty captain America-ish?
DarknessEternal

Can't go wrong with a Mithral Chain Shirt.
Morotis

02-14-06, 02:54 PM
Ok, so everything I suggested for Captain America was completely wrong, awsome...

A) a Fighter/Master Thrower works awsome, wearing mithral chainmail and with an Adamantine Large Sheild of returning, the throw anything feat, etc...

B) Paragon is good nice, I like the feat, I'll make it far shot so I can actually be more useful in combat...

C) I remember Captain America mowing down rows of nazis by charging at them, so I should probly take Improved overrun? Then I have to take Power attack as a prerequisite

You'd want Power Attack for Power Throw anyway. It combines lovely with the Weak Spot throwing trick.

i made a sorta CA like class a while ago, based around the use of shields as weapons, with the signature ability to throw shields, but no one posted any reply, it's in my sig if anyone want's to take a look. that being said, i think that the current core only build that's been suggested would work just as well if not better.
Crovaxan

as far as charging with the shield, i thin CW has two feats, shiled charge and... something else like shield slam or something.

:bump:
ok, First: I sigged that!
Second: Vow of Nonviolence has little to do with being non-violent, it has everything to do with not killing people. And that's what superheros do, they don't kill people, like ever.... cept Daredevil...
Third: I like this thread, I like the ideas everyones submitting, I'm just bringing this thread back to see if any new ideas pop up...

I disagree on a couple of things. Cap's strength is rather high. Strength and Con would be his top scores. Does he throw his shield? Yes. Every attack? No. Only occasionally. He bashes with his shield a lot, though. He also has the ability to heal injuries quickly. The high Con and Fast Healing feat should be in there. His punches are rediculously powerful. To do it justice, he would need the monk unarmed damage equivalent. The problem with doing something like this is that it's impossible. Gestalt, on the other hand, with 20 Fighter/20 Monk would net you someone who could fight pretty damn well. Drop some fighter in favor Exotic Weapon Master and you can get the nifty shield tricks. Make the fighter feats focus on his shield and some other feats give better Ki attacks. He's a major martial artist. This is about the only way you'd really get Captain America. And his shield would definitely be adamantine.
To honestly make him, you would need an augmented human, maybe even use the Goliath with some minor alterations. His beginning stats would need to be somewhere around: STR 20, DEX 14, CON 20, INT 14, WIS 14, CHA 12. Rough estimates. But most of the stuff so far just doesn't seem to fit.

02-19-06, 04:02 PM
Engilbrand, you make an excellent point! Unfortuantly we're not trying to make Captain America himself, for making a superhero in D&D, you'de have to go epic almost immediatly, we're trying to make a PC like Captain America, inspried by him...

As for a Goliath, no, won't work, not at all. not in my opinon, I'll stick with Human paragon.

As for Faster Healing feat, Improved Toughness works better...
unusualsuspect

02-19-06, 06:32 PM
Improved Toughness makes one tougher, it does NOT make one heal faster. I believe the Cap heals faster then normal humans, thus Faster Healing would be a better choice.

So we've established that the Cap is an augmented human at peak performance, eh? Well, that makes his physical stats pretty damn easy to decide: 18 str, 18 dex, 18 con. I never followed the Cap much comic-wise, so I don't know what sort of mental scores he'd have. It sounds like the Cap does some pretty mean martial arts, and I'm willing to bet he's dodged more grenades then can be counted, so I figure maybe 2 levels of monk for 1d6 unarmed strikes and Evasion. Fighter levels are pretty much a must - Cap is a helluva fighter, and he'll need quite a few feats to fit the flavor. Master of Throwing seems to focus a bit much on his throwing and less on his melee, but it gives a few very nifty abilities that mesh well...

Hmmm.

Where could one find this Human Paragon template?
Xaxor

02-23-06, 01:00 PM
Unearthed Arcana has the Paragon levels for all of the core races, along with Drow, Half-Dragons and Tieflings.

The Ranged enhancement from the Expanded Psionics Handbook is cheaper than Throwing and Returning, and it has a larger range increment (30'). It's only a +1 .

02-23-06, 01:03 PM
Just and aside, but does anyone know what ever happened to Cap's original shield? His original shield was a Vibranium-Admantium alloy, stonger than pure Admantium, and on par with Thor's hammer Mjolner in durability.

02-23-06, 01:19 PM
What about making him an Aasimar? I realize that Cap' was a human, but the bit of celestial blood is a good replacement for Super Soldier serum. The bonus to wisdom and charisma fit Cap' well and would allow for more points to be allocated elsewhere.
Morotis

02-23-06, 04:40 PM
woah! someone ressurected my post for me! sweet! Does anyone know where I could gat a Aasimar paragon, cause that might work!

Ranged is an awsome idea, Xaxor, it saves me from taking throw anything as a feat, I won't have to make the sheild returning, nor will I have to make it bashing just to get some decent damage, I'll proable make it bashing anyway for melee. Now I don't have to take far shot to get a decent throwing distance either, nice! Now I have to free feats, I'll make em Sheild Charge and Sheild Slam...

Xaxor, you and psionics are my two new favorite things...
