Card Caster [Archive] - Wizards Community

09-09-07, 03:05 PM Has anyone tried to make a card caster esque character based on the Baten Katos (??) game? I think this would be a cool idea, and already searched for one but found nothing. Thanks for everything! ^^

09-09-07, 04:30 PM One really easy way to do that, flavor wise, is to turn your wizards spellbook into a deck of cards (I've never played the game, but) his preparations could by stacking his deck, or creating the cards in the period of an hour, and then when he reveals the card, or throws it, or something, the card burns up (using that spell for the day).

Perhaps he has a number of cards, but it is too difficult to maintain multiple cards (hence increased spells/level) as a novice, thus when casting, the card either disappears or turns blank or some similar action.

The cards could all have a default picture (something arcaney) and the wizard spends his morning shaping the picture into a spell, which then takes less effort to maintain (than to create, making the spell preparation and spells/day meaningful).

You don't really need much of a class for that, just a flavor change.

The sorcerer, on the other hand, could make a number of cards, but only has the energy to play so many at a time. You could use a card deck or a tarot set and label them with you're "Spells" That'd be pretty fun.

DM: "What do you do?"
PC: "Five of Clubs"
DM: "Summoning a Dire Wolf? Clever."

09-09-07, 10:25 PM To do the same argument again... the Card-based spell-slinging, while a interesting concept, is too much of a pain to do in an RPG like D&D.

Sure, you can do it, but you're looking at some real headaches when you don't ever draw what you need.

But anyways, I've already seen the lentalis mage, but i was going for more of a baten catos, absorb spells into cards,etc magic system, but i guess i'll just have to create one myself. Whatever ^^
