the cardmasters are just that, casters that use cards, about card invocations, they are basically arcane spells, invoked through cards. the most common cardmasters usually use some kind of evocation (usually force) thier powers are indeed scary, even to themselves, most either fear thier power or do not know of it, 2 major people of this class, were clow reed and sakura kinomoto. they invoked the powers of the deck through thier own stamina. sakura as we know slept in late on a regular basis. overusing her cards, sakura was of course an epic cardcaster

new feat [Metamagic]
school mastery
prerequisite: ability to cast arcane or divine spells, or invoke cards
benefit, treat all spells or cards in this selected school are treated as 1 level lower than normal for determining slot or cost (minimum 0, turn level 5 evocation's into level 4 evocations
special, this feat cannot be taken more than 5 times and no more than twice in the same school of magic, it applies to both divine and arcane.

basically a cardcaptor sakura esque spell like ability user, the intent was to replicate sakura kinomoto for all the CCS fans, finally a wand wielding, card using, oversleeping magic user

hopefull some ccs fans will peach this, i hope it's balanced. come on an indestrucatable quarterstaff that raises caster level as a full round action has gotta be good for something, basically i tried to replicate the sheer magical power of cardcaptor sakura while being on par with a wizard/sorcerer

the cards are essentially a spellbook that can be activated any time (assuming one has the invocation points to invoke the cards) versitile arcane learning, pretty set power (full round action for +6 caster level, or +10 at levels 20 and higher, it would sure ask for an evoker, sakura kinomoto in a sense was an uber evoker with a few planar/dimensional spells)

i said this just to bump this thread

somebody's gotta enjoy the chance to play cardcaptor sakura in a D&D game.
this allows less need to butcher arcane casters. (i bleive it is more sakura esque than a heavily butchered wizard or sorcerer)

Your wish is my command! I just happen to be taking a break after episode 46, and was thinking of making one myself. But since half the work is already done, I shall get to the PEACHing asap.

But I'd say that half of the cards are summoning, and some are transmutation (jump is jump, dash is expeditious retreat), illusion makes it's appearence, and evocation for Li kun's lesser magics. The 'sheer magical power' comes from her being a high level card captor. Besides, did you see how many hits she took in ep 46 against Yue?

Okay, I haven't looked at the class yet, but I will say that Sakura is sort of a mix between psionics and sorcerers. Got the mechanics of psionics (sort of) with the flavor of sorcerers. I will look at the class now, and get back to you on what I think.

Okay, remove that silly dex to certain skills thing. That belongs under class features if anything, and should not be in this class at all anyway.

First thing to take care of: get a table! If you need a template, there is one in the PrC forum (PrC builders cheat sheet or something like that) that can be adapted to base classes. [ code]table[ /code] will get you a nice table. You have to align it yourself. Get rid of the spaces between brackets. I can't do much else until there is a table. Also, that's probably why not many people stopped by here.

She took the feat. It has nothing to do with the class, she just took that feat which alows dex to be used for climb, jump, and something else. Also, she had a not bad str score. About 10.

EDIT: feat is Agile Athlete from RotW.

That may be, but you can't adopt everything exactly when you turn it into a playable DND class. Remember most movie/anime/etc characters are basically a one-person-vs-many type that doesn't exist in DND. Even if CCS is a one-person-vs-one-enemy-per-day-only type most of the time, the scenario hardly exists in DND either. Also, I can even argue Sakura never needed to use her constitution either since she at most fights once a day (doesn't get tired or short on hp etc) and so on and so on.

what about the scuffles with syaoron and meiling, oh wait, they also had a low hit die,,

meiling was the equivelant of a chaotic monk with a d4 hit die,

syaoran was a duskblade with a d6 hit die specialized in evocation.

Tomoyo Daidouji would probably be a d4 rogue with no sneak attack, no trap finding, and max ranks in profession (cook), craft (sewing), profession (photographer), craft (toymaking), craft (leatherworking), appraise, escape artist, knowledge (fads), perform (sing), knowledge (arcana) (she spent time with sakura) craft (metalworking) (the titanium/rubber hybrid dress for catpuring the thunder card) knowledge (local), listen, spot, profession (student) perform (dance), perform, (weapon drill,) (jugglling kitchen knives anyone?) sleight of hand ( to bring said kitchen knives to class for the sake of juggling) and endless other utilitatrian skills as well as weapon proficiency (kitchen knife) weapon proficiency (frying pan) and weapon proficiency (mathbook)

It is called expert.;)

She apparently also has excellent ranks in sense motive and spot checks, as mentioned by Eriol at the end of the manga (where Tomoyo noted how she knew that he never meant any harm due to that kind look in his eyes).

Sakura is apparently able to use any card she wants at-will, and this seems tricky to implement in dnd. I am thinking some sort of warlock, recharge-magic or ToB maneuver system style of "casting", since she rarely appears to use the same spell more than once at any sitting either, and generally no more than 2-3 spells at 1 stretch.

For example, in the final battle (according to the manga), she would have readied jump, shield, watery, fly, windy, dark and light.

Whoa...but 52 maneuvers... At least the manga was a tad more sane with just slightly over 20 cards...

how does tome of battle work?

It is hard to describe properly if you have never seen the book before, but I will try my best.

Basically, your PC has a list of special attacks, called maneuvers. During combat (or any encounter), you can ready a certain number of them (basically selecting which you want to use). Each maneuver can be used once for a certain effect, and you can refresh them by performing some special actions (varies from class to class).

In a way, it is something like Magic: The Gathering. You draw X cards, play them from your hand, and get new cards/refresh old ones over time.

Go here (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/we/20061225a) and here (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/ex/20060802a) for a very general idea of how it works.:)

expert has a d6 hit die. again the proficiency with the kitchen knife sounds very intriguing. rogue gets more skill points, and a lot more class skills. yeah, most of tomoyo's skills are utilitarian (profiency with the kitchen knife, treat as a broadblade shortsword that costs as much as a dagger, this is what perfrom weapon drill was meant for, juggling kitchen knives)
YamiShinobi

12-20-07, 01:10 AM
also how does the warlock work? i need to compare both.
runestar

12-20-07, 01:22 AM
Warlocks get invocations (basically SLAs) which they can use at-will, and an eldritch blast, which is basically a ranged touch attack which deals damage (think something like a lantern archon's eye ray).
YamiShinobi

12-20-07, 01:26 AM
oh, that should be simple.
dman11235

12-20-07, 09:36 AM
But I think it would have a per day point system. They do get drained if they use too much magic. At will mechanics don't have this.

Oh, and Tomoyo is an expert with good int. Also, not max ranks in everything, just most of those things you mentioned. And only one perform. She has that perform feat that lets you use your ranks in one perform as your ranks in a bunch of of others.
runestar

12-20-07, 09:45 AM
I do recall her being very fatigued from converting the clow cards to sakura cards, but that seemed like a physical condition (more like a plot hook), and not a literal "spell point drain" which should not convey any drawbacks in the dnd context.

The 2nd movie does suggest that her magic supply is limited (and as such, can be depleted, just that she normally does not reach such a threshold).

In retrospect, I suppose some sort of sorc with spell points could work. The cards represent her repertoire of spells known, which she can cast spontaneously using spell points (like psionics).

What about that winged lion familiar of her? :P

I'm confused. Since when did Tomoyo ever use a knife, frying pan, or book as a weapon? Tomoyo was the epitome of noncombatant, and never did much of anything aside from provide support (much of it in the form of morale bonuses, making Bard the most obvious class for her, D&D-wise). I mean, I love the show to death, and own all of it and the manga, having watched it several times over. I cannot for the life of me recall Tomoyo doing anything in combat aside from bull-rushing Syaoran in the third season (which destroyed her camera, btw).

As for the class, can't comment on it thoroughly. I love the idea of incorporating CCS into a D&D game, but I'm leary of actually how they mesh. Someone with access to Clow or Sakura cards is incredibly rare (as in, only one person in the world). Spreading that out is fine enough, but not really a perfect representation. I'll have to get a look at this later on in order to get a better handle on it and maybe give some feedback.
dman11235

12-20-07, 02:04 PM
But Clow created the cards, in a world where magic isn't all that prevalent. So it is reasonable to assume that more people where able to make cards in D&D, therefore increasing the possibility of a card master.

Also, I believe that those instances Tomoyo used a knife/pan/etc. you are referring to are not used as a weapon, but as a perform, is what they are trying to say.

When? I cannot for the life of me recall seeing Tomoyo "juggle" kitchen knives, either in the anime or manga. Do some fancy kitchen moves during home-ec, maybe, but certainly not juggle them. If someone can cite an episode for me, I'd be more than glad to watch it when I get home.

Even if she is juggling them, or doing something else that's showy, that doesn't mean she has Weapon Focus with a knife, or that it's even an actual weapon which she could wield with proficiency.

12-20-07, 06:32 PM
well I have never seen the anime or read the manga but I have to say this class is hugely overpowered at low levels and the card progression seems messed up. you have third level spells like fireball available at first level as a card, but 1st level spells like jump and Expeditous retreat not available till much higher levels. and then their is the elemental costumes which are also way overpowered, I mean elemental immunity and flight at first level, come on. oh and a weapon can not have an enhancement bonus higher than +5 without going into epic territory. so the wand thingie has to be either changed or explained
dman11235

One thing that crossed my mind is that something similar to the Erudite might be a good mechanical choice to deal with a book of cards.

Basically, though the Card Captor might wind up with 52 cards to choose from (and remember, some of them are nigh-useless, like the Bubble), they can only use so many per day. But, rather than preparing them, they have a limit of "unique cards per day" or something. They always have all 52, but in one day, they can only use 5 cards. Any number of times (to a limit, maybe paid with points). Once they use a card, it takes up one of their daily uniques. So if "Sakuya" the gnome card captor has a deck of 17 cards, and three unique cards per day, then the first three cards she uses are the only ones she can use for the rest of the day, up to a limit of her card points or whatever.

The Erudite (which explains it a lot better than I can in a quick paragraph) can be found in Complete Psionic, but there's a lot of discussion about it in the Psionics board, so that might help flesh out your understanding.
dman11235

12-21-07, 10:44 AM
You need to measure out the characters you put into it, that's how it gets aligned. An "l" is equal to a " ", as is an "A". So if you want to change a column, you need to get rid or add on an equal number of characters in each row.

EDIT (ninja post): That might be a good mechanic.
Mercurius

12-21-07, 11:28 AM
Yeah, it feels more natural. It's not like Sakura walked into the final battle with Light and Dark actually prepared - she had no idea she'd be needing them, and she certainly hadn't ever used them before. She just realized she needed them and pulled 'em out.

Basically, it works pretty well as a choice. You've got all the awesome diversity that the cards provide, allowing you to react to whatever it is that's happening in a given episode/adventure, but you're not just going to blow through all 52 cards. That's just not how it should work.

I didn't get much of a chance to look at the mechanics last night (sadly), so I just want to throw a potential class feature out there: IF you need your wand to use the cards, it stands to reason that a particularly high level Card Captor can forgoe it entirely. Clow never used a wand/staff, back when he was alive. In season three, you see him simply ask the Flower to activate, and she does. It makes sense for a thematic high level power, that probably isn't even that powerful an ability except in fringe circumstances.

Come to think of it, the erudite does go about fleshing out the various abilities in a most interesting manner...

For those interested, Erudite (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/iw/20060406b&page=1) is available for free viewing here.

It's not like Sakura walked into the final battle with Light and Dark actually prepared - she had no idea she'd be needing them, and she certainly hadn't ever used them before. She just realized she needed them and pulled 'em out.
