Does that mean that they get new spells and spell levels as they increase in Levels or do they just get their current spells with a better caster level? So if You take Mystic Theurge do you end up with higher spell levels in both arcane and divine magic or just a better caster level to both? I've been so confused about this for a while and people have told me it works both ways so I'll leave it up to the D&D lawyers to figure out. |
| DrowSmurf10-12-05, 02:21 PM | Mystic Theurge for example gives you +1 arcane and divine spellcasting levels just as if you gained new spells and spells per day by going up in the arcane and divine classes you used to get into Mystic... if you have 2 arcane classes and a divine you go up in spells and spells dper day just as if you had gained one level of the divine and 1 of the 2 arcane i hope i didnt make that too confusing... |

| strenoth10-12-05, 03:38 PM | No, there is no difference. the "and spells known, if applicable" is always in effect, as it's an intrinsice part of their spellcasting progression. Some just mention it, some don't. |

Does that mean that they get new spells and spell levels as they increase in Levels or do they just get their current spells with a better caster level? +1 caster level (what you see everywhere except in the "Spells" section of certain prestige classes) only increases the effectiveness of your spells. In essence, a Wizard 10 / Fighter 10 who gains a +1 caster level from... something... (an item, a racial trait etc.) knows as many spells as a 10th level wizard would, and of the same maximum level, but all spells he casts are treated as being cast by an 11th level wizard (influences things like penetrating spell resistance and the duration for many spells, as well as damage in many cases). +1 spellcasting level, on the other hand, grants everything. Possibly access to higher level spells, new spells learnt, and a higher caster level. It's only granted by certain prestige classes to allow you to continue advancing with your spellcasting class, as far as I'm aware. |
| Mirikon10-12-05, 08:27 PM | Generally, caster levels gained from feats, items, and nonpermanent or nonuniversal class abilities (Like some PrC the Geomancer's Ley Lines, which give +1 caster level in a certain terrain type, but don't count for other terrain types) only increase the effectiveness of your spells, as though you were one caster level higher. So you an extra damage die on your Fireball, for instance, or an extra round on the Summon Monster spell. This is not to be confused with PrCs that give spellcasting progression. If you take a level of Frost Mage, for instance, you gain a caster level, and you would gain new spells and spells per day as if you were a wizard, sorcerer, or whatever you were before taking the PrC. So a Wizard 10/Frost Mage 1 would cast as an 11th level Wizard, be able to cast 6th level spells, and would have the two spells added to his book, like a wizard would if he had just become Wizard 11. |
