I'm sorry if this has been asked before, but I don't have time right now to do a search.

When you calculate your caster level if you have a prestige class that does not give a +1 existing spell casting class for every level of the prestige class, what is your caster level? Is it [your levels in the caster class] + [your levels in the prestige class] or is it [your levels in the caster class] + [every level in the prestige class that give a +1 level existing caster class so far]

Same question for spells known, spells per day, (powerpoints, if applicable), etc.

I figured I should only count the levels of the prestige class that have "+1 level of existing caster class", but the long description of the "Spells" heading of most prestige classes confused me.

I think it's the latter, as you were saying. Prestige levels that don't give a +1 caster level likely don't count when figuring your casting level.

By default, the non-increasing levels do not Count for caster level of your spells. Actually, let's Create a new term: "Casting" level. Casting Level is the strength at which you cast your spells, Caster level is what determines your number of spells per day etc.

Normally, Ones casting level is = to caster level. however, there are a FEW PrCs that add to Casting Level but not Caster level, or add to Casting level every level of the PrC but only add to Caster level for a few. the PrC WILL say it if it adds to casting levels on levels that do not increase caster levels.

Thank you both, as said I thought it was like that, but the extra text was confusing me (Look it up, I believe it actually implies that every level counts)

its simple when you can finnaly understand it:

say you've got a 5th lvl wizard/4 lvl Prc (which gives a caster level at 1st and 3rd). you would cast spells as a 7th lvl wizard, going off everything in spells as if you actually were a 7th lvl wizard. At least thats how I interpreted it.

you're absolutely right: it's all confusing.

you only count the "+1"'s to determine spellacsting abilities.

attention that some classes, even if giving less than full spellcasting, do however augment caster level at every level (Green Star Adept, for exemple)
