| Propane04-05-07, 08:37 AM | Hey all. I'm looking to start a level 1 character who I want to be a monk/sorcerer, though I don't know how far to take each class along the line. I'm also interested in knowing a suitable prestige class. The sorcerer levels will be more for self-augmenting the monk side of my character rather than damage output, maybe with some crowd control. For the prestige class, I was thinking Invisible Blade (my DM has agreed to allow Kama for the Invisi Blade's backstab) or Reaping Mauler. Am I doing the right thing with my choices or is there a better way? The only think that I don't want changed the the Monk levels being the primary class for my character. The stat rolls I got were 18, 17, 16, 14, 14, 13. P.S. My only DnD experience is from Baldur's Gate II and Icewind Dale II, so I know nothing much about prestige classes. This is my first post here and I've never played real DnD so please don't make too much fun of me ^_^ |

There is option two however which is to go Monk/Divine caster. Divine magic can do seeminly everything you want to do (Buff, crowd control) and then you would also be able to heal. this way you get the AC bonus for high wisdom and high bonus spells. and before you ask there is a prestege for that as well in complete divine :) Can you change your stats in the line or are they set? if you can i would go with... For Monk/sorcerer stats- 16 Str, 14 dex, 14 Con, 13 Int, 17 Wis, 18 Cha For Monk/cleric(or other like archivist/favored soul)- 16 Str, 17 dex, 14 Con, 14 Int, 18 Wis, 13 Cha |

Take the Arcane Strike feat from the Complete Adventurer to make up for the horrible BAB. The real problem with this is you are really dividing up your ability needs. Strength for damage, Dex and Wis for AC, Cha (or Int) for spells. A better caster is a divine/monk. That way your Wis does double duty. Take Monk / Cleric / Sacred Fist. It works out much better. |

Monk/Cleric, Monk/Druid, or possibly Monk/Favored Soul combined with the Sacred Fist PrC from Complete Divine would all work as Divine Monks... But if you wish to go the arcane route, there are two feats, either of which would help with an arcane monk. By choosing Kung fu Genius or Carmendine monk you use intelligence to determine monk abilities, such as unarmored AC and stunning fist DCs... Carmendine monk has the added benefit of treating one of your monk attributes (monk ac, speed, or unarmed damage) as if you were a monk two levels higher, the ability chosen at the beginning of the day when you meditate on your sutras. As has already been mentioned, the prestige class Enlightened Fist from the book Complete Arcane is a monk/arcane caster PrC that will work... so a monk and wizard, or possibly monk and duskblade (a base class from the Players Handbook II) coupled with either Kung fu Genius or Carmendine monk could work... You'd gain more hit points and base attack at the expense of a larger spell seletion and higher level spells with the monk/duskblade... but it could prove interesting. If you are going some form of charisma based caster, you may want to pick up the ascetic mage(?) feat from... I think it's Complete Adventurer, but I could be wrong... It lets you multiclass monk and a charisma based caster more efficiently... As for races, I'd suggest human. The extra skill points and first level feat could help just about any class out. Illuman from the book Races of Destiny also could be a good choice since they have an ability that would increase your caster level a little without having to pick up the feat Practiced Caster to make up for lost caster levels... Halflings make awesome small monks... Whisper Gnomes doubly so. As for other Prestige Classes, if you play the character into high levels, you may want to pick up a rogue-ish caster PrC like Unseen Seer or Spellwarp Sniper... the wouldn't advance your monk-ness, but it would advance your casting and skills, which you could use to stay sneaky and use spells to your advantage... Just a few possibilities... :) |
| Shadowhowler04-05-07, 02:43 PM | Er, WOW. Nice Stats. I guess Monk's MAD problems arn't sore bad if you get scores like that... may I ask what method you used? I never seem to see stats like that on my characters. |
| penchant04-05-07, 04:31 PM | I've looked at Monk / driud, but it just doesn't work as well as with cleric. Half the druid's power comes from wild shape which you can't pick up till later. The cleric gets spells and domain powers from first level. Favored Soul is a charisma based class, so you still have to divide your stats. |
| Hideous Phidias04-05-07, 05:10 PM | Monk/wizard would be good if you take the feat that allows you to use you int modififer for the monk's armor. |
| ninjarabbit04-05-07, 05:12 PM | Besides enlightened fist, abjurant champion from Complete Mage works surprising well (note that the monk has handaxe proficiency so it qualifies for abjurant champion) and as a n added bonus uses combat casting too as a prerequsite. A monk1/wizard4/enlightenedfist10/abjurantchampion5 is probably the best arcane monk combo out there. |
| dark_nony04-05-07, 05:33 PM | I dont remember the name, but in CAd ther is a good sorc/monk feat. |

She says you can have a total of three classes =( I guess I'll look further into that Clementine Fist thinger. I couldn't find any info in any of my books about that Kung Fu Genius, I couldn't even find it on the internet. What is it? Thank you all for the help so far, I appreciate it. |
