| wvmmafan07-19-06, 10:35 AM | The have finally finished the Causticmancer, but I decided to make it a prestige class. Actually it is a high level prestige class that is part of a prestige line (this prestige class leads into another one, which leads into an epic prestige class). I know some of the things on this class seem high powered and that some of the drawbacks are kind of weird, but it all goes into the whole prestige line. I will be posting the next step in the line call an ACID BORN very soon. I would very much like feedback, and I am wiling to tweak this class if it is necessary. |
| wvmmafan07-19-06, 10:38 AM | Hit Die: d6 Prerequisites: To qualify to become a causticmancer, a character must fulfill all the following criteria. Alignment: any nongood Feats: brew potion, combat casting, quicken spell, scribe scroll, and spell mastery Skills: concentration 12 ranks, craft (acid wine) 12 ranks, craft (alchemy) 12 ranks, knowledge (arcana) 12 ranks, spellcraft 12 ranks Spells: ability to cast 5th level spells or higher Special: Ritual of Acidity Class skill: The causticmancer’s class skills (and the key ability for each skill) are concentration (con), craft (int), decipher script (int), intimidate (cha), knowledge (all skills, taken individually) (int), profession (wis), spellcraft (int) See Chapter 4 of the Player’s Handbook for skill descriptions. Table 1: The Causticmancer Level 1st (base attack bonus +1) (fort +1) (ref +0) (will +2) Level 2nd (base attack bonus +2) (fort +2) (ref +0) (will +3) Level 3rd (base attack bonus +3) (fort +3) (ref +1) (will +3) Level 4th (base attack bonus +4) (fort +4) (ref +2) (will +4) Level 5th (base attack bonus +5) (fort +5) (ref +3) (will +5) Table 2: The Causticmancer Level Special 1st acid wine, sweat acid, advanced acid splash 2nd acid wine, sweat acid, advanced acid splash, caustic lightning 3rd acid wine, sweat acid, advanced acid splash, caustic lightning, acid devil 4th acid wine, sweat acid, advanced acid splash, caustic lightning, acid devil, acid strike 5th acid wine, sweat acid, advanced acid splash, caustic lightning, acid devil, acid strike, acid storm, acid purge Table 3: The Causticmancer Level Spells per Day 1st +1 level of existing arcane spellcasting class 2nd +1 level of existing arcane spellcasting class 3rd +1 level of existing arcane spellcasting class 4th +1 level of existing arcane spellcasting class 5th +1 level of existing arcane spellcasting class Class Features: All of the following are class features of the causticmancer prestige class. Weapon and Armor Proficiency: The causticmancer gain no proficiency with any weapon or armor. Spells per Day/Spells Known: When a new causticmancer level is gained, the character gains new spells per day (and spells known, if applicable) as if he had also gained a level in whatever arcane spellcasting class in which he could cast 5th level spells before he added the prestige class level. He does not, however, gain any other benefit a character of that class would have gained (bonus metamagic or item creation feats, and so on). If a character had more than one arcane spellcasting class in he could cast 5th level spells before he became a causticmancer, he must decide to which class he adds each level of causticmancer for the purpose of determining spells per day. Special Abilities: The Ritual of Acidity grants the causticmancer special abilities, but it has a price. The causticmancer are basically slaves to the acid born and the acid born are the slaves to the black or green dragons they serve. But a few power hungry people are willing to give their lives and souls to the cause. Acid Wine (EX): This is a special wine that causticmancer's must drink everyday. Over time it builds up their tolerance to acid and eventually against poison. At 1st level, the causticmancer gains a + 2 bonus on saving throws against spells and other effects that deal acid damage. This bonus goes up by 2 every level of causticmancer taken (+4 at 2nd, +6 at 3rd, +8 at 4th, and +10 at 5th). The causticmancer also gains acid resistance of 5 at 1st level, it increase by 5 at every level (10 at 2nd, 15 at 3rd, 20 at 4th, 25 at 5th). Due to the toxic nature of the wine, the causticmancer gains a + 4 to all fortitude saves involving poison. The causticmancer becomes abdicated to the acid wine, and takes 1 point of permanent constitution damage, for each day he does not drink it. Sweat Acid (Su): A causticmancer can sweat acid as a swift action. So any enemy attacking the causticmancer with an unarmed, melee, grapple, touch, slam, or any other attacks that require physically touching the causticmancer take acid damage. The initial damage is 1d6, and does additional damage for each additional round of exposure, for complete rules on acid exposure refer to page 302 of the DMG. Any possessions that the causticmancer has that are not specially treated, also take this damage. This ability also does 1d4 points of initial damage to the causticmancer and additional 1d3 points of damage for each consecutive round he uses it (this is due to the fact he is sweating some of the acid wine that’s in his body). Advanced Acid Splash (Sp): As a free action the causticmancer can produce an orb of acid that darts forth from his palm and strikes a target dealing 1d3 points of acid damage. The orb strikes accurately, even if the target is in melee combat or has less than total cover and/or concealment. If the causticmancer concentrates on the target for three rounds, the orb can be directed a specific body part. The orbs can target inanimate objects. For every two causticmancer levels beyond 1st, the damage gains a +1 to damage —1d3+1 at 3rd, and 1d3+2 at 5th. Though the causticmancer can use this ability as many times a day as he desires, he takes 1 point of temporary constitution damage if he goes over 20 orbs in a 24 hour period. For complete rules on acid exposure refer to page 302 of the DMG. Caustic Lightning (Su) This is a unique ability that combines the power of acid and electricity. As a standard action the causticmancer can hurl a bolt of acidic lightning that does both types of damage. This ability has a range of 100 feet. The bolt does 1d3 points of electric damage at 2nd level, 1d4 at 3rd level, 1d6 at 4th level and does 1d8 at 5th level. The bolt also does 1d6 points of acid damage at 2nd level, and gains a + 1 for each additional level (1d6+1 at 3rd, 1d6 +2 at 4th, and 1d6+3 at 5th). The bolt does 1d4 points of additional acid damage for each round after the initial strike unless it is some how neutralized. This ability can be used a number of times per day equal his causticmancer level plus his intelligence modifier. The target can attempt a reflex save for half damage (DC 10 + ½ his character level + his intelligence modifier). The causticmancer can not use any of his abilities for 1d4 rounds after each use of his caustic lightning abilities. For complete rules on acid exposure refer to page 302 of the DMG. Acid Devil(Su) As a full round action a causticmancer can produce a 4ft. tall dust devil that is imbued with acid. The devil appears in a square adjacent to the causticmancer and acts immediately on that round. The devil attacks all unfriendly creatures within a 50 foot radius of the causticmancer. The devil deals 1d4+2 points of bludgeoning damage and 1d6+2 points of acid damage for each attack. The devil lasts for 3 rounds plus the causticmancer's level. The devil strikes accurately, even if the target is in melee combat or has less than total cover and/or concealment. For complete rules on acid exposure refer to page 302 of the DMG. The causticmancer must concentrate on the devil to keep it from attacking allies so he can not use any of his other, powers while he has an acid devil active. Acid Strike (Sp) An acid strike produces a vertical column of acid that torrents downward. The ability takes a standard action. The spell deals 2d6 points of damage at 4th level and 2d6+4 at 5th level. This ability is very draining for the causticmancer and leaves him dazed for 2 rounds after each use. The first time this ability is used each day, it causes 1 point of temporary strength and constitution damage. For complete rules on acid exposure refer to page 302 of the DMG. Acid Storm (Su) This ability is one of the causticmancer's most deadly. Using a full round action the causticmancer creates an enormous black storm cloud, lightning crackles within the storm. Acid rains down in the area, dealing 1d6 points of acid damage (no save). You call six bolts of caustic lightning down from the cloud. You decide where the bolts strike. No two bolts may be directed at the same target. Each bolt deals 1d8 points of electricity damage and1d6+3. The bolt does 1d4 points of additional acid damage for each round after the initial strike unless it is some how neutralized. A creature struck by a bolt can attempt a reflex save for half damage (DC 10 + ½ his character level + his intelligence modifier). The storm can be cast out to a range of 100 feet and has a 50 foot radius. This ability can be used five times a day, but the causticmancer can not use any of his other abilities for 2d4 rounds. The causticmancer is also dazed for 1d4 rounds. For complete rules on acid exposure refer to page 302 of the DMG. Acid Purge (Su) This is an extremely powerful attack that is a last resort for a causticmancer. Upon reach 5th level a causticmancer can purge all of the acid from his system. As a free action the causticmancer can purge all of his causticmancer abilities into a 360 degree spray of acid and lightning. The spray has a radius of 50 feet. Any caught in the spray takes 10d6 points of acid damage and 5d6 of electrical damage. Anyone in the radius can attempt a reflex save for half damage (DC 10 + his character level + his intelligence modifier). This attack completely drains the causticmancer, and he can not use any of his abilities for 1d4 days. The causticmancer is also dazed for 2d4 minutes. He also takes 2 points of temporary strength and constitution damage. If the causticmancer does not drink acid wine within one hour of using this ability, he must make fortitude check (dc 15) or die due to shock. For complete rules on acid exposure refer to page 302 of the DMG. |
| wvmmafan07-19-06, 03:37 PM | Does anyone have an opinion?? |
| benstundze07-19-06, 03:53 PM | this class makes me confused  sorry no constructive comments :( |
| wvmmafan07-20-06, 09:55 AM | Actually I am glad someone commented, even if it was to say that you were confused. If you are confused then probably everyone else is. I may be able to answer some questions, and that may clear some things up. I know that it seems odd that every ability has a drawback, but that will be explained in the next stage of this prestige class that goes in line with the causticmancer, The Acid Born. But I will give you a little info, so maybe it will not be so confusing. The path to becoming a causticmancer and/or an Acid Born goes through the Black and Green dragons that came up with these magical rituals. The Dragons put drawbacks in the rituals for a reason. They want to be in control of the causticmancer and Acid Born at all times. To ensure this they put drawbacks in the rituals so that if the Causticmancer or Acid born, want these problems to go away (which they can), they will have to do whatever the dragons say. When I am done with the Acid Born Prestige class, things will make more sense. There will also be an epic prestige class in this line, and you will see why the dragons put so many problems in their rituals. Because if the causticmancer and acid born are not completely loyal to the dragons when they hit the epic class, they could easily kill their dragon masters. So if you have any questions please feel free to ask, it may be necessary for me to re-write this class so it is less confusing. |
| benstundze07-20-06, 06:53 PM | try formating it better so you can read it? |
| wvmmafan07-20-06, 08:32 PM | i am working ona new foramt, I did this all while atending suumer classes at college. Silly me to 12 hours this summer, that is fulltime during a fall or spring semester. So I have been uber busy, plus I could not get the html working right. But I do appreciate the feedback. |
| feartheinvinceblehamster07-20-06, 09:39 PM | Format hard to read. Craft[acid wine] 12 RANKS? That is, with all due respect, STUPID. This means that the person has to plan to become a causticmancer at 1st level, basically. Somehow, I was expecting a new psionic-element class. |
| wvmmafan07-21-06, 10:06 AM | I am working on a better format, I have finals next week, but then I will have plenty of time to work on it. Plus my attempt to learn how to use html has not gone according to plan. But yes I understand that you have to plan this out at first level. This prestige class is the first in a line of classes. The causticmancer is followed by the Acid Born, which leads into the Epic Prestige class called the Mordant. But I am also working on a version of the causticmancer that is a base class. Since you mentioned it I am also working on a psionic class for this also. But I do appreciate the feedback, know I can go back and work out the kinks. |
| Far_Traveler07-21-06, 12:48 PM | I have a few words: One, when you make a -mancer class, always have a vowel right before that m. Eliminate that second c. Two, hamster-dude. Do you see Caustikenesist(sp?)? I thought not. Three: Change requisetes. If this is what i think it's intended to be, Make the requisetes lower. Make the skill requirements 8-10 ranks, eliminate Craft(Acid wine), spellcraft, and concentration, but keep alchemy/arcanca. Eliminate full spellcasting progression, make instead of 5th level spell (what is with that), instead make it the ability to cast Acid splash and Melf's Acid arrow. with such low requisetes, you can do justice to no spellcasting advancement. Advancing Caster level with the class for acid spells does justice, perhaps with +6 or +7 with 5 levels? Nah, tear the stuff away from casting. Spell mastery and Scribe scroll? that's laughable, this is probably because you wanted this class for your wizard. this should be weeded out. in Addition, keep out combat casting and quicken spell. It does indeed look like you tailored the requisetes to be: Your character. I'm keeping with the flavor. Oh, and add Hieghten spell to the list, when a requisete spell is specific I always like adding that. Eliminate the ritual of Acidity and instead add something a bit less 'oath-like' and instead make it more worthy of the -mancer title. example:must of been immersed in acid with only non-item magic to protect him (a riddle is suffused in this, the answer is: it doesn't have to be HIS magic(this is ripe with oath opportunities), don't tell the player this) the thing is: Caustimancer means 'acid mage'. Don't disgrace the term with organization. Four: and change the save advancement to standard Strong fort/will, poor ref, and add 2+int modifier for skill points (you forgot it) Five: Only put Abilities on a particular table line when it starts or gets changed, improved somehow. However, this stuff is horrid, I shall do a complete overhaul(for the record, caustic lightning was dumb) Class abilities Acid Resistance Poison Save bonus 1st: Acid Bolt 1d6, Acid Dependency 5 +1 2nd: Acid Bolt 2d6, Acid Armor 10 +2 3rd: Acid Bolt 3d6, Acid Sword 15 +3 4th: Acid Bolt 4d6, Acid Wave 20 +4 5th Acid Bolt 5d6, Acid Apothesis Immune immune Acid bolt(Sp): This ranged touch Attack, Range 50 ft, does 1d6 acid damage per class level. it consumes 1 acid point per die of damage. this ability is a standard actioned. Weapon Focus feats apply to this ability if taken specifically. Apoethesis: for x2 cost, you may activate this as a swift action Acid Dependency: This power comes at a price. The Caustimancer requires to consume a flask of acid specially prepared by a DC 25 Craft(alchemy) Check(takes one hour), costing 50gp per serving, to gain 100 points for his acid pool. His maximum acid capacity is 1000 per class level. It does gain a passive effect however, For 24 hours after consuming a flask, you gain Acid resistance and bonuses on Poison Saves, as noted on the table. Acid Armor(Sp): this ability Deals your acid bolt damage to all within 5 feet of you on your initiative. this ability is activated as a swift action. this ability costs 2 acid points per die of damage Apothesis: Double damage/range for triple cost Acid Sword(Sp): This allows your Acid Bolt to be used In melee without provoking attacks of opportunity, but it must be used as a melee touch weapon. As a bonus, it has double damage limit. This ability 1 point per die of damage. Weapon Focus feats apply to this ability if taken specifically. Apothesis: You gain Perfect two-Weapon fighting with your acid sword, and you may manifest two swords(must pay for only 1) Acid Wave(Sp): This allows your Acid Bolt to be used as a 120ft. line for 5 points per die of damage, but allows a ref. save for half (DC 15 + class lvl + int modifier). as a passive bonus, your acid bolt's range is now 150ft. Apothesis: The Damage limit quadruples. Acid Apothesis: Your abilities improve (note the apothesis entries in each), and your Acid pool doubles (now 10,000). in addition, You may, by expending 100 acid points, cast desintegrate as a spell-like ability to destroy a 10-foot cube of unattended stone, wood, or metal only. You like? |
| benstundze07-21-06, 01:51 PM | i think you are changing it to much but it is cleaner hehe |
| wvmmafan07-22-06, 10:42 AM | thanks for the feedback everyone |
| wvmmafan07-22-06, 10:45 AM | hey far_traveler, how do you do the code: I know I could makes things look alot smoother if I knew hoe to make thase scroll boxes. |
| feartheinvinceblehamster07-22-06, 10:49 AM | Fartraveler's seems rather well-balanced. |
| Xereq07-22-06, 11:51 AM | Full BAB progression, an ability at every level, good fort and will saves, and full caster progression and d6 HD? Every caster in your campeign willwant to be an acid mage every time because acid mage=win at D&D. |
| wvmmafan07-23-06, 09:42 AM | Full BAB progression, an ability at every level, good fort and will saves, and full caster progression and d6 HD? Every caster in your campeign willwant to be an acid mage every time because acid mage=win at D&D. You are right it was designed to be rather powerful. This prestige class is meant to be takem by at least a 10th level wizard. I was asked to make this by a friend of mine, it was designed for a high powered game. This was my first attempt at doing a prestige class, so I was flying blind. I knew the class needed work, so that why I posted it because I knew I get some good honest feedback. I am working on making a toned down version that will be a base class option. Plus I am working on a psionic version. |
