We are starting a new campaign and I really want to play a mounted character who can fight, but I also need their mount to not die every adventure. So I made this build. It is based off Ranger and Scout, take a look and feel free to leave feedback.

I searched the forums for a build similar to this, but I could not find one. If someone else did something like this I would love to see it.

Mount: same as animal companion for the Druid, except use Cavalry Scout class levels to determine mount’s advancement. Mount must be at least one size larger than the character and both willing and able to act as a mount.

Sense Ambush: Rider and mount combine senses to achieve a state of constant readiness. Add ½ class level to all Spot and Listen checks when determining an enemy ambush.

Slam Attack: The mount charges at the opponent as normal. The mount makes a melee touch attack to determine a hit. If the slam hits deal damage then the opponent must make a Reflex save (DC 10 + damage dealt) or land prone in a square 5 ft away (this only applies if the opponent is the same size or smaller). The rider may not attack during the slam attack, but may make attacks of opportunity. The Slam Attack does provoke AOO as normal.

Ride-by Attack: When charging an opponent that is at least 15 feet the rider may make an attack against an enemy he passes and still attack the target of his charge. At higher levels the rider may make multiple attacks on a single charge as long as the total number of attacks do not exceed a full-attack. Each attack beyond the first is at a –2 to hit penalty and each subsequent attack increases the penalty by –2. The rider may only make one attack per enemy. The rider must be wielding a one-handed melee weapon to use this ability (scimitar, longsword, mace, etc).

Intimidating Charge: The rider and mount take a full-round action to intimidate their opponents. On the rider’s next turn he must charge and deal damage to an opponent. All opponents who witness the attack must make a Will save (DC 10 + ½ class level + CHA modifier) or be shaken for a number rounds equal to the amount they failed the Will save. If the rider drops the target of his charge add 5 to the DC.

Skirmish: The Cavalry Soldier relies on mobility to deal extra damage and improve his defense. He deals an extra 1d6 to damage on all melee attacks on a turn where his mount has moved at least 10 feet. The damage increases every 4 levels. At 3rd level the rider and his mount receive a +1 competence bonus to Armor Class. This bonus applies after the mount has moved 10 feet and lasts until the beginning of the riders next turn.

Mobility (mounted): same as Mobility feat, but only applies when the rider is mounted. Rider does not need to meet prerequisites to gain this feat.

Some interesting things in it, but IMHO you really need to decide if you're going to be more of a mounted Combatant or a mounted Scout....big difference between the two.

If you want more of a combat rider, stuff like Intimidating Charge and Slam Attack are nice but not really necessary if you're going mounted Scout.
Likewise Sense Ambush and Track would be nice for a mounted Scout, but completely unneccessary for a true mounted combatant.

Plus 6 Bonus Feats may be a bit too much. 4 or 5 may be a bit more reasonable, spread over at the rate it is for the actual Scout Class.
Finally, you said you wanted to keep you Mount alive.....I'd suggest focussing more feats or abilities into that exact purpose to make it viable.

You got some good ideas, I think they just need to be refined to properly suit whatever type of character it is you want.

Good luck with it :)
