I'm a fourth level dwarven caver (ranger), and its just about time for me to find myself an animal companion. What is a good animal companion for a caver? Seems like there are no animal companions suitable to underground anything. The dire rat is the only choice that seems close to possible, but it's not my character's style at all. Please help.

Aren't bears and wolves good for caves?

Bats and burrowing animals aren't really strong enough to make great companions, and i'll need a few more levels before i can get a bear. As of now, a wolf looks like the best bet. If anyone has any more ideas...

Wolverines, Badger's, Moles... a few off the top of my head, don't know what your DM allows, but remember, there are Dire Versions of these creatures available...*shudders at the thought of a dire wolverine.

thanks for the help, everybody. I'll probably use a wolf for now, switch to something else when i can get an animal with more hit dice.
