I was rather certain I already posted this one... very wierd.
Very very wierd.

Cavern Archer

While archery is not rife through dwarven armies and society, any army needs archers.
In the small confines of the Underdark there is not always room for Longbows (and, sometimes, even Shortbows).
However, Crossbow are much smaller.
Considered cowerds by some dwarfs, dwarven crossbow-archers can be incredibly deadly.
The best dwarven archers often learn to use the Underdark's small confines for their benefit, and a small group of these dwarfs (usually known as "Cavern Archers") can sometimes change a battle's outcome.
Most Cavern Archers are fighters or rangers. A rare few rouges adopt this PrC, and even less wizards and sorcerers. No paladin has ever taken lvl's in this PrC (due to it's inherent "cowerdlyness").
HD: d10

Req:
Race: Dwarf (Any).
BAB: +7
Feats: Must be proficient with one of the following: Light Crossbow, Heavy Crossbow, Great Crossbow; Weapon Focus with one of the aforementioned weapons; Point Blank Shot, Precise Shot, Rapid Reload, Sharp-Shooting. (Weapon Spec?)
Special: Must be trained for a month by a Cavern Archer (either from a dwarven army or a mercenary company).

BAB Fort Ref Will Abilities
1. +1 +2 +0 +0 Improved Rapid Reload (2)
2. +2 +3 +1 +1 Superior Weapon Focus
3. +3 +3 +1 +1 Improved Critical
4. +4 +4 +1 +1 Improved Precise Shot
5. +5 +4 +2 +2 Improved Rapid Reload (3)
6. +6 +5 +2 +2 Superior Weapon Specialization
7. +7 +5 +2 +2 Improved Multiplier
8. +8 +6 +3 +3 Banked Shot
9. +9 +6 +3 +3 Improved Rapid Reload (4)
10.+10 +7 +3 +3 Phase Shot

Improved Rapid Reload: At 1st, 5th and 9th lvl, a Cavern Archer can reload his weapon even faster- he may use the Rapid Reload feat more than once per round (the norm), up to the number indicated.

Superior Weapon Focus: Due to almost singular use of the crossbow, the Cavern Archer gains an additional +1 to all attack rolls with his chosen crossbow (the one with which he has Weapon Focus; if he has several Weapon Focus feats with crossbows, he should choose one).
{This stacks with Weapon Focus and Greater Weapon Focus}.

Improved Critical: The Cavern Archer can hit where it hurts. He gains the Improved Critical with his chosen crossbow (see above). There is no range limitation to this ability.

Improved Precise Shot: The Cavern Archer gains this feat for free in 4th level.

Superior Weapon Specialization: Due to his extensive training in the use of the crossbow, the Cavern Archer gains a +2 bonus to all damage rolls with his chosen crossbow (see above). This stacks with any othe Specialization damage the Cavern Archer has. This bonus, unlike regular Specialization bonus, is not limited by range.
{This stacks with the damage bonus from Weapon Specialization and the Greater version of said feat.}

Improved Multiplier: By 7th lvl, the Cavern Archer learned how to hit enemies with incredible precision- his crossbow critical multiplier becomes x3 (instead of x2).

Banked Shot: At 8th lvl, the Cavern Archer can use the underdark's structure to hit his opponent. As a full round action, the Cavern Archer may fire an bolt at a target within 20 feet of a wall (but not adjacent to the wall) and treat the target as if flat-footed for the purpose of AC and damage inflicted.

Phase Bolt: When the drow High Priestess hides behind a stalagamite, prepearing her deadliest spell, when the duergar assasin runs and hides behind the wall, to avoid attacks after a failed (or succesful) strike, when the mind-flayer hovers to the safety of a crack in the cavern roof, they think they are safe.
That some poor soldier will have to come hunting them.
When a bolt flies through the wall and kills them, they are usually rather surprised.

As a full round action, the Caver Archer may shoot a bolt through matirials that blocks his way to his target (though this does not affect armours, natural armour, force fields, deflection bonuses or anything else that grants anything but cover bonus to AC). He must still guess the target's location and hit as if the target had full concealment (his IMPROVED PRECISE SHOT faet does not aid him here).
However, the target is considered Flat Footed.

This allows the bolt to travel through all manners of stone, rock, sand, dirt, and so on, through unworked metal and minerals, and through plaster and wood.

Well?

Sharp-shooting? What's that?
No Craft ? Or Hide, Search, Spot or Listen.... Ok, whatever, the feats are enough, IMHO.

[b] BAB Fort Ref Will Abilities
1. +1 +2 +0 +0 Improved Rapid Reload (2)
2. +2 +3 +1 +1 Superior Weapon Focus
3. +3 +3 +1 +1 Improved Critical
4. +4 +4 +1 +1 Concealment Reduction (20%)
5. +5 +4 +2 +2 Improved Rapid Reload (3)
6. +6 +5 +2 +2 Superior Weapon Specialization
7. +7 +5 +2 +2 Improved Multiplier
8. +8 +6 +3 +3 Cover Reduction (1 grade)
9. +9 +6 +3 +3 Improved Rapid Reload (4)
10.+10 +7 +3 +3 Banked Shot

Improved Rapid Reload: At 1st, 5th and 9th lvl, a Cavern Archer can reload his weapon even faster- he may use the Rapid Reload feat more than once per round (the norm), up to the number indicated.

So basically he can attack more... Hmmm... It could be too much, but for those prereqs... Playtest, however.

Obvious, mandatory, good (what did you thing "OMG" meant? ;)).

Improved Critical: The Cavern Archer can hit where it hurts. He gains the Improved Critical with his chosen crossbow (see above). There is no range limitation to this ability.

Concealment Reduction: When shooting at someone with concealment, reduce the miss chance by 20%. This represents the Cavern Archer need to hit Drow wizards and other Underdark denizens.
Drow wizards? So are Mindflayer clerics not affected (j/k)? Both OK. This buddy ends making crits on 17/20 x3, then? Not too bad, I've seen 3.0 druids with scimitars get better.

{This stacks with the damage bonus from Weapon Specialization and the Greater version of said feat.}
OK.... You give lots of specs and focuses, dontcha?

Improved Multiplier: By 7th lvl, the Cavern Archer learned how to hit enemies with incredible precision- his crossbow critical multiplier becomes x3 (instead of x2).
OK

Cover Reduction: In the underdark, there are many things to take cover behind. The Cavern Archer learned to shoot around those obstacles, thus reducing the cover of any target of his by one grade (one half to one qurter, for instance). If the target still has cover, the Sharp-Shooter feat applies as normal. This ability canot be used against targets with full cover.
Hmmmm.... OK, I guess.

Banked Shot: At 10th lvl, the Cavern Archer can use the underdark's structure to hit his opponent. As a full round action, the Cavern Archer may fire an bolt at a target within 20 feet of a wall (but not adjacent to the wall) and treat the target as if flat-footed for the purpose of AC and damage inflicted.
So... Does natural stone (as in caves) count as walls for this ability? If so, every attack would count as banked shots when fighting in the Underdark.

Good one.... All in all, pretty good, powerful but I don't think it's too much with all those prereqs... Anyway, with this kind of PrC's I strongly advise playtesting..... Just to make sure it's not over-the-top-

I am willing to bet I did. I know I did on the old boards, and I am rather certain on this ones, too... http://www.geocities.com/flammabledragon/Savarasconfused.TXT

Sharp-shooting? What's that?
A feat from Sword and Fist, gives you +2 to attack against enemies with cover (less than full).

No Craft [Bowmaking/Arrowmaking]? Or Hide, Search, Spot or Listen.... Ok, whatever, the feats are enough, IMHO.
In my opinion, too.
Also, why Bow\Arrow? Crossbow and bolts! :P

So basically he can attack more... Hmmm... It could be too much, but for those prereqs... Playtest, however.
Remember that without it, they will shoot once per round with heavy crossbow... at 20th level!

Obvious, mandatory, good (what did you thing "OMG" meant? ) ;) .[/quoet]
Drow wizards? So are Mindflayer clerics not affected (j/k)? Both OK. This buddy ends making crits on 17/20 x3, then? Not too bad, I've seen 3.0 druids with scimitars get better.
17-20, aye.
Not too bad, not too good.

I do.
So do you.
It's called A PrC. :P

So... Does natural stone (as in caves) count as walls for this ability? If so, every attack would count as banked shots when fighting in the Underdark.
Incorrect- it takes a full round to do that.
So every shot *can* be that, but not all will.

I love Underdark PrC's and I think you did a great job, but I wanted to point out this 3.5 feat, so you might want to make a small addition to include it. With the feat, your Cover Reduction and Concealmeant Reduction are a little redundant. Perhaps you can work up a Superior Precise Shot ability in their stead? I don't know, your abilities would still be good -- reducing the 100% concealment of certain targets, but im sure you can come up with something.

IMPROVED PRECISE SHOT [GENERAL]
Prerequisites: Dex 19, Point Blank Shot, Precise Shot, base attack bonus +11.
Benefit: Your ranged attacks ignore the AC bonus granted to targets by anything less than total cover, and the miss chance granted to targets by anything less than total concealment. Total cover and total concealment provide their normal benefits against your ranged attacks.
In addition, when you shoot or throw ranged weapons at a grappling opponent, you automatically strike at the opponent you have chosen.
Normal: See the normal rules on the effects of cover and concealment. Without this feat, a character who shoots or throws a ranged weapon at a target involved in a grapple must roll randomly to see which grappling combatant the attack strikes.
Special: A fighter may select Improved Precise Shot as one of his fighter bonus feats.
An 11th-level ranger who has chosen the archery combat style is treated as having Improved Precise Shot, even if he does not have the prerequisites for it, but only when he is wearing light or no armor.

What about an ability that lets you fire through total cover, like shoot through a wall, although the target still is protected by total concealment miss chance and you also have to guess his location behind the wall?

OK, thanks!

WOW! Stupid feat!

So, I think I will grant that feat for free on 4th level, change Banked Shot to 8th level (without Sneak Attack it ain't that great) and add the following ability at 10th:

Phase Bolt: When the drow High Priestess hides behind a stalagamite, prepearing her deadliest spell, when the duergar assasin runs and hides behind the wall, to avoid attacks after a failed (or succesful) strike, when the mind-flayer hovers to the safety of a crack in the cavern roof, they think they are safe.

When a bolt flies through the wall and kills them, they are usually rather surprised.

As a full round action, the Caver Archer may shoot a bolt through any matirial that blocks his way to his target (though this does not affect armours, natural armour, force fields, deflection bonuses or anything else that grants anything but cover bonus to AC). He must still guess the target's location and hit as if the target had full concealment (his IMPROVED PRECISE SHOT faet does not aid him here).
However, the target is considered Flat Footed.

WIll this be OK?

Yes, you saw me on the Spelling Foundation, the old Riddles thread and some PrC's (IIRC).
How did that happen? Keen Edge, Improve Critical and some other munchkinnes (PrC's and whatnot) applied, et voila... If I find the character sheet, I'll tell you.... Though it was not MY character.

Wall of Ice/Iron.... Hmmm, Phase Door is just a guide, include Wall spells if you feel like it.
The PrC is almost finished.... But I'll need your help once i'ts posted.....

Maybe it was x3.... Doesn't the Weapon Master increase the crit multiplier? Perhaps some levels of this were included in the build...
With Keen Edge and improved Critical stacking (3.0), the 13-20 boils down to having both (normally it's 17-20, substract 2 for every ability and you have the 13-20 range).

Alright, most of what's needed to be said has already been said by the others so I'll just throw in my hat and say that I like this class. You don't think about dwarves and archery too often, at least I don't. I'll have to keep the Cavern Archer in mind during the next Underdark campaign. I particularly like the Banked Shot ability--very cool.

I know this isn't particularly helpful commentary, but I would only be repeating what others have said so I didn't think it necessary to give an analysis.

Keep 'em coming. :D
