| Ravenson10-30-05, 07:03 PM | One thing to remember. The berserk is NOT a barbarian only more so. Look it up. If anyone is interested in seeing a barbarian/druid/ranger that actually matches Celtic legends to some degree, let me know and ill drop the stats. Critisism is my friend Leo |

| Ravenson10-30-05, 08:03 PM | Here are some Berserk ability descriptions Illiteracy Berserks do not automatically know how to read and write. A berserk may spend 2 skill points to gain the ability to read and write all languages he speaks. A berserk with a level in another class becomes literate. Animal ability You gain one of the available traits of your chosen animal. You gain one trait at 2nd level, 7th, and 13th. Fast movement You add +10 to your basic speed Animal shape At 6th level, a berserk gains the ability to turn himself into his chosen animal back again once per day. This ability functions like the polymorph spell, except as noted here. The effect lasts for 1 hour per berserk level, or until she changes back. Changing form (to animal or back) is a standard action and doesn’t provoke an attack of opportunity. A berserk loses his ability to speak while in animal form because he is limited to the sounds that a normal, untrained animal can make, but he can communicate normally with other animals of the same general grouping as his new form. A berserk can use this ability more times per day at 12th level and every 4 levels after that as noted on after that. You have a 50% chance to fail changing if you are in a rage and if you fail you may not retry for the rest of the encounter. It still counts as one of your uses for the day. When changing into a bear, you are considered a black bear, though you may not look like one Rage A berserk, like a barbarian, can fly into a rage once per day at level 8. In a rage, a berserk temporarily gains a +4 bonus to Strength a +4 bonus to Constitution, and a +2 morale bonus on Will saves, but he takes a -2 penalty to Armor Class. The increase in Constitution increases the barbarian’s hit points by 2 points per level, but these hit points go away at the end of the rage when his Constitution score drops back to normal. (These extra hit points are not lost first the way temporary hit points are.) While raging, a berserk cannot use any Charisma-, Dexterity-, or Intelligence-based skills (except for balance, escape artist, intimidate, and ride), the concentration skill, or any abilities that require patience or concentration, nor can he cast spells or activate magic items that require a command word, a spell trigger (such as a wand), or spell completion (such as a scroll) to function. He can use any feat he has except combat expertise, item creation feats, and metamagic feats. A fit of rage lasts for a number of rounds equal to 3 + the character’s (newly improved) Constitution modifier. A berserk may prematurely end his rage. At the end of the rage, the berserk loses the rage modifiers and restrictions and becomes fatigued (-2 penalty to Strength, -2 penalty to Dexterity, can’t charge or run) for the duration of the current encounter. Entering a rage takes no time itself, but a berserk can do it only during his action, not in response to someone else’s action. You can fly into a rage as an animal, but as soon as it ends you are both back to your original form and exhausted as apposed to fatigued (fatigued, -6 penalty to strength, -6 penalty to dexterity, half movement speed) for one hour. Damage reduction At 10th level, a berserk gains damage reduction. Subtract 1 from the damage the berserk takes each time he is dealt damage from a weapon or a natural attack. At 10th level, and every three berserk levels thereafter (13th, 16th, and 19th level), this damage reduction rises by 1 point. Damage reduction can reduce damage to 0 but not below 0. Low-light vision At level 10 berserks can see twice as far as normal characters of their race in low light. They still see colour. |
| Quirriff10-30-05, 08:17 PM | You're after the Bear Warrior Prestiege class, A true Beserker. And Beserkers are Norse, not Celtic. |
| Ravenson10-30-05, 08:30 PM | hummmm What are these 'bear warrior's you speak of? |
| Ravenson10-30-05, 08:35 PM | And thanks for the nationality checkup : ) ! PS:Nature’s fury When changing into an animal, changing back, or raging during combat, a random druid spell has a 50 percent chance to occur. To find out which spell, roll a d10. 1-9 will tell you what level the spell is, and a 0 means no spell is cast (1 includes lvl0 spells). After that, roll a d100. Once again, once you find out what spell it is, roll to find out which ally (is it was a positive spell) or enemy (if it was a negative spell) it affects if it is random (the berserk himself counts as an ally and always has at least a 10 percent chance). If the spell is not applicable at the moment (target is out of range, target has thumbs), nothing happens. Caster levels are 4 unless otherwise noted with the spell, and you do not need to roll for success, or supply any components except foci that cost money. Effects that are continuous end when the berserk becomes humanoid again. Summoning is random and always comes from somewhere within 10 feet of the berserk. Any area of effect (ice storm, entangle) are restricted to 100 feet around the area of the encounter and do not harm the berserk. Control spells (control wind) are always as strong as possible and focused around the berserk. All spells are random. No spells ever negatively affect the berserk himself, but his party is susceptible. |
| Ravenson10-30-05, 08:41 PM | Sorry for the excessive wordiness, but im afraid that the bear warrior is looking somewhat like a dumbed down version of the Beserk (thanks for the proper name, by the way - i wasnt able to properly research it at the time of creation. and yes, beserk does mean quite specifically bearskin, but in any game that involves samurais exceptions to The Way Things Actually Are are really quite common). thanks muchly, anyhow! | Thorak10-31-05, 12:12 AM | There's absolutely nothing Celtic about animal affinity or animal shapes. There are a few legends of the most powerful of druids shapechanging, but that's druids, which is why D&D druids have Wildshape. But animal totemism, which seems to be what you're describing, was not a Celtic concept. For instance, Cuchulainn, who would be the paragon of what you're describing, never once turned into an animal or claimed to have any animal abilities. The Celtic berserk rage was always described as an unnatural twisting of the body, rather than a changing into anything else. And otherwise, I agree with Quirriff. A Norse berserker is best done through barbarian going into bear warrior. Anything else is just flavor text. |
| ksbsnowowl10-31-05, 12:38 AM | And otherwise, I agree with Quirriff. A Norse berserker is best done through barbarian going into bear warrior. Anything else is just flavor text. Bear warrior, or the Berserker PrC found in the norse section of Deities and Demigods. |
| Quirriff10-31-05, 03:45 AM | Bear Warrior is on Page 17 of Complete Warrior, and Page 36 of Oriental Adventures. |
| Ravenson10-31-05, 10:40 PM | Thanks muchly for the input, this is actually a prestige class i dexigned for quite a specific campaign. Sorry about the incorrect celtic/norse...if you read up youll find that i actually DO specify that i meant norse. as for the whole flavor text thing...well...yeah. exactly the point of these was to transmit the idea of the campaign and this eemed to fit. the bear warrior was far too specific in such a savageminded campaign and did not seem to do justice. however, it is play tested (and good!). If you look at it that way, then yes, it is essentially a bear warrior only more so. and, not as a personal insult to any of the people who corrected me, but REALLY, if you want to go for historical accuracy...dont play dnd (look up the origins of elf, dreurgar [dont have a way to check the spelling and im in a hurry, but you get the idea], troll and dwarf). yet another 'PS' type thing, even though beserk means bearskin, it was common for them to wear other animals. I guess I'll have to make sure i read ALL the prestige classes before making my next one! Leo Ps: if i have the time, ill edit this into good condition later on |
