How is the Challenge Rating derived for core races/classes ? For instance, a Wiz4/Fighter5 - It it simply the sum of all character classes ?

How about a 10th level Half-Giant Psionic (ECL +1) - What is the CR for that ?

If you have the source rule, please share it's location with me !

Thanks and Happy Holidays !!

For non-level adjusted races with class levels, CR=class levels.

Cool - where does this rule comes from - and what of races with an ECL adjustment !?

You know, I find that funny, though.... Understand, I am in no way mocking the system.

Technically, by this system, a group of four level ten fighters should have a decent challenge bringing down ONE level ten fighter. After all, he IS a CR 10.

Never quite understood that. But then again, there is the whole four fights a day, thing.... But even then, four on one, four times, isn't going to wear them out, you know?

Just my opinion,

I agree with you. A PC is suposed to be able to handle 4 challenges of equal level using 80% of their resources. (Was writen in DMG, can't tell you the page at the moment)

When facing a single challenge rating, a party should be using 20% of their resources to defeat the oppoent. How does a NPC lvl 10 equal a CR of 10? I am assuming the logic is the equipment. A Giant doesn't have magic weapons, or potions, or spells, but a lvl 10 Fighter could have many magic items. Somehow this is suppos to even things out, but I don't think so.

A PC has more money in equipment and magic items than the same level NPC. So the odds of a lvl 10 Fighter killing one of the party members in a level 10 group is unlikely, but he may kill the rogue....unless the rogue dealt so much damage the group kills the level 10 NPC in one round.

And even if the NPC fighter deals so much damage that it could kill one of the party members, does 3 healing spells equal the hit points of one player? 20% of your resources should use up spells as well as hit points.

I recall after many fights, we walked away with all of our hit points intact. But, not a single spell was left among us. At least this fit the ideal mechanic, 20% resources used per encounter.

Remember, the fact that the CR is equal to the party level does not mean the opponent is supposed to have a 50/50 chance at winning the encounter. It means the party is supposed to overcome the encounter with 20% of their resources spent. (An equal fight is a CR about 4-5 higher than party level).

So, in this case, 20% of the resources equals the fighters of the party taking some damage and needing to spend healing potions or otherwise get their wounds healed.

Challenge rating is:
Monster's CR + class levels
or
Monster's CR + NPC levels - 1

Found in DMG (can't remember what page)

LA Level adjustment tell you how powerful monster is compared to his number of hit dice

HD + LA = ECL Efective character level tells you how powerful would a player be if he'd be that monster. Ecl is compared to class levels. ECL is usually about 2 x CR.

Hope I helped you, RiTz21
