It's a tall order. Any WotC material is useable. 32 point buy See if you can build a Fighter that can do as much of a rogue's job as possible without taking any base class levels other than fighter.

If that's too easy for some of you, do it without magic.

Not sure why you'd want to, but taking the Thug Fighter Varient from UA would help. You're not going to get Trapfinding anywhere though, which is kind of critical.

Define what you consider the 'rogue's job', for starters. Rogue is one of those classes that encompasses many, many archetypes. Do you mean the trapmonkey, the con-artist, the acrobat, or what?

This assumes that by "rogue's job you mean trapfinding and scouting." Also that by "fighter" you mean "fighter 20," which is kind of a dumb request, as few optimized builds go straight 20 levels in anything, save Druid. But anyway.

Straight Fighter
1. Boost your skill points: Int 14, Human, Nymph's Kiss gets 6/level.
2. Maximize your skill points: Able Learner feat: If you're smart you'll dip into Rogue, Ranger or Human Paragon.
3. Grab Shape Soulmeld and Open Chakra (Hands) from Magic of Incarnum. You now have trapfinding. You might want Bonus Essentia, too.

At level 10, your open lock/disable device checks will be 12+ability mod+items (Versus 13+ability mod + items with a basic TWF Rogue). Search/Hide is worse with straight fighter, but if you go Ranger1/FighterX you'll be fine.

Barbarian
This is easier, as Barbarian Dungeonscape variant gets trapfinding (and mechanical-trap disabling). Just figure out a way to boost survival (soulmelds would work again) and you're set.

Trapmonkey aside. How many of the archetypal roles can you fill at any one time. Can you be the stealthy, con-man? could you also be acrobatic? How far can you take the fighter down the rogue's path?

As far as the reasoning behind it, just an excercise. Some players can and do impressive things with classes.

Oh, you want the con man angle, too? That's easy; take the Fighter suggestions above and sub in Thug Fighter for it. Now you have bluff, gather info, etc.

Any class can get Hide, Tumble, Balance, Sense Motive and Diplomacy as class skills by taking the Martial Study and Martial Stance feats. Fighter bonus feats can be used, which would help the fighter rogue-wannabe. A thug fighter has an extended skill list and the skill points needed to spend in the new skills.

Not really contributing much, but shouldn't this thread go into the Char-Op boards? This seems more up their alley.

On top of what has previously been mentioned, of particular note are Guerilla Scout and Guerilla Warrior from Heroes of Battle. They make Spot and Listen and Hide and Move Silently respectively class skills for all character classes. Maybe sink a few spare level feats in Open Minded.
