Theres a somewhat interesting debate going on in an Eberron thread (here) (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?p=10261626#post10261626) that I think needs more general attention.

The question is this, "What happens to racial traits, feats, and abilities when a PrC changes your base Type?"

The thread is about the Renegade Mastermaker changing one into a being with the Living Construct type/subtype. Similar cases are the Elemental Savant changing you into an Elemental, Dragon Disciple changing you to a Dragon, and Alienist changing you into an Outsider.

Personally, I think you would retain all access to feats and abilities with "Race name" as a prerequisite.

Others in the thread believe you would lose your racial traits and no longer benefit from feats and abilities with "Race name" as a prerequisite. This includes such things as the Human +1 to skill points per level, the Elven ability to detect secret doors, Dwarven stonecunning; any race with Lowlight vision would lose it if the new Type did not grant it. Basically, you no longer benefit from everything listed under your Racial Traits in the PHB that is an ongoing ability unless it is also granted by your new Type.

What is the opinion of the community at large on this issue?

I think that knowledge (skills, feats, weapon proficiencies, etc) should be kept unless somehow your brain is severly altered in the process.
Keep in mind that a char that knows how to use a weapon may no longer be able to use it depending on how he is physically changed (i don't know how many orcish waraxes are made in small or huge in your campaign :)).

I'm on the fence with Racial ability modifiers, since i can see both sides of the argument. I would say that you keep all your stats as they last were - unless the prestige applies a template or otherwise gives you new ones to replace them with. However i may let a player 'undo' them if they could convince me why.

But other racial traits such as vision or certain resistances should be lost. (Your eyes have changed so you lose darkvision, your liver changed so you no longer get a +2 to fort saves for poison, etc).

Hope this helps :)

If you're gaining a type or template it's almost always on top off whatever you already are.
