What's worse is that a barbarian can wear mithral full-plate as easily as a fighter, meaning that the fighters innate abilities become worthless at high levels. With this idea, perhaps the fighter could be more. This will not help some of the overall problems with the fighter as a class, but perhaps it will help. 1) Mithral armor still requires the proficiency feat for whatever kind of armor it originally was. (Ex. Mithral full plate still requires heavy armor proficiency) 2) Characters who do not possess armor proficiency while wearing armor recieve an additional -2 armor check penalty, have a 10% increased arcane spell failure chance, and have the max dex of the armor reduced by 2 (this can bring the max dex of some armors to less than 0). 3) RadicalTaoist's idea here (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=791075) 4) At first level (Character creation only) you may choose to trade in proficiencies in return for various abilities. Giving up tower shield or shield proficiency gives you one bonus point each. Giving up light, medium, and heavy armor proficiency give you one bonus point each. You may give up any number of proficencies but may only give them up at your first character level. For one bonus point you may choose any of the following abilities (any feats are bonus feats and you must meet the prerequisites for any feat you choose): Improved Initiative Lightning Reflexes Toughness Weapon Finesse(you do not need to meet the normal prerequisites to take this feat) Improved Unarmed strike Skill Foucs Blind Fight Point Blank Shot Rapid Reload Quick Draw Skill points and skill list as either druid, swashbuckler, monk, or warblade For two bonus points you may choose from these abilities: Power Attack Dodge Combat Reflexes Weapon Focus Combat Expertise Exotic Weapon Proficiency Two Weapon Fighting Mounted Combat Uncanny Defense: You may add your Int mod as a dodge bonus to armor class as long as you wear light or no armor and are unencumbered. For three bonus points you may choose from one of these abilities: Monk like AC bonus: you add your wisdom bonus to AC just like a monk. This bonus scales just like a monks as well, based on your level in whatever class you gained this ability in. All the same restrictions apply to you that apply to a monk. Also, you may not choose this ability if you chose the uncanny defense ability. Skill points and list like a ranger, bard, ninja, or swordsage. Fast Movement: as a barbarian Increased Hit Die: increases the hit die of this class one step |

| Adolfo_Mondschein02-17-07, 08:48 PM | Sounds great... for dipping anyway.... :D tasty even... Do you get them at level one? Or after 4th? Also, I beleive an Errata or FAQ stated that mitheral counts in all ways one category lighter, which according to them, include proficiency... I believe they used a rogue with mitheral breastplate as an example... |

Light armor is better than all medium armor, and mithral armor gets rid of the need for any heavy armor proficiency at all. I'm hoping that by implementing these changes armor will become important, or if you don't want armor, you don't gain useless class features. This way it gives you customizeability with whicever class you choose. Edit: I added RT's idea for fighter dead levels in to make the fighter even more favorable. I see the fighter as a dying class, I want to give it a little something to help keep it alive. |
