Changing a character's type [Archive] - Wizards Community

09-25-06, 12:45 PM Many PrCs have a final ability that changes their type. What benefits are given from the change? Does it just protect against spells where the target is a humanoid? Or are there other benefits (maybe a template or something) that goes along with it too? Thanks!

09-25-06, 12:57 PM I believe it depends on the class, the class should say if the character type change does something unique. Are you talking about how some classes say, make a person incorporeal? In that case the rules governing that character change to as if they were incorporeal like a ghost.

If it changes you to the outsider type, you'll suddenly gain all simple and martial weapon proficiencies. If it changes you to the plant type, you'll gain immunity to a bunch of super nasty stuff, mind-effecting stuff included.

09-25-06, 01:14 PM Changing a creature's type either by class or by template does that: it changes the type. It doesn't protect the creature against spells, it just changes the way a creature is affected by some spells.

For example, Charm Person. This spell is limited to creatures with the Humanoid type. So any creature who's not an Humanoid is not affected; this creature might be a dragon (humanoid with the half-dragon template), an outsider (aasimar or tiefling), a construct (Warforged or 10th level Green Star Adept), a fey, an undead, etc. However, many of these creatures could be affected by a Charm Monster spell (but see lower).
If a wizard crafted a spell called Charm Fey, it would affect only Feys, and no other creature.

Often, a class or template that change a creature type also give it some other benefit or protection. For example, Undeads are immune to all Mind-Affecting effects, including Charms. So a class or template that transform a creature into an undead would make it immune to Charm, amongst other things.

When there are additional Special Qualities, it is usually listed. For example, a 10th level Dragon Disciple get various bonuses as well as Immunity to one type of energy.
