| RayJ06-19-05, 06:23 PM | I'm preparing a new campaign for my players and one of them is interested in working ona Batman-type character inspired by watching the newest movie. I have read some other posts as to what classes/prestige classes would work well, but we've grown kind of attached to a lot of the invocations the Warlock has available. We are primarily interested in removing the eldritch blast from the warlock along with the blast and essence invocations to make way for more abilities to definte the character. The Ghost Walker prestige class for Sword and Fist provide a couple new tweaks that would also help the character (resolute aura and anonymity) and I thought of pulling those into this core class to help balance out some more monk-like abilities. I'm still working out exactly what to include when I remove Eldritch Blast but here are some of the abilities from other classes that I think are deserved in the build: Acrobatic Charge Defensive Roll Evasion Unarmed Damage Speed Bonus Slow Fall I plan for the character to wear light armor and I'd like to incorporate theif-acrobat into the core class, but since it's already well balanced I'm feeling it'll be more balanced just to have him take that as a PrC if he wants those abilities. In addition to his standard unarmed combat prowess, I feel he should be decent at ranged disarmed with his special shurikens, but that should be easily handled by feats. Advice for changes and thoughts on the concept as a whole are very much appreciated! |

Giving him invocations would be taking away pretty much the only cool think about him, instead turning him into just another stock vigilante superhero. Start with the rogue. Add some monk and fighter. Finally, add a list of special (mostly) mundane items, and you'r set. |
| RayJ06-19-05, 06:52 PM | The problem with setting the character up as rogue/monk/fighter is that he doesn't gain access to all of the mystical abilities Batman APPEARS to posses. This includes appearing out of nowhere from complete darkness. The point of using the Warlock was to gain access to those abilities without having to multiclass into 6 different prestige classes. Even starting at 12th level, it would be mighty difficult to have a character that "felt" enough like Batman having to jump around between 3-4 core classes and 2-4 prestige classes. I do respect your position and have read a couple of threads mentioning how one would go about creating Batman from existing classes (as mentioned in the first post) Resorting to standard classes is always an option. Also realize that in a fantasy setting, it is perfectly natural to use magic and/or magic-like abilities to replace what is lacking in technology. This is Dungeons and Dragons, not D20 Modern. If that were the case, I probably wouldn't need any help getting the character to fit. Thank you for the advice, as I will see what sort of builds can be created via that approach. I still feel that using the warlock minus eldritch blast could be a more than viable approach as well and would like more feedback on this approach. |

The 'appearing out of the shadows' thing is really just a damn good hide/moves silently check. Rogue does perfectly for that. I'm with the previous poster. A Rogue/Monk with a few levels of fighter, perhaps, would do the Batman thing perfectly. All the rest is really just showmanship and equipment. |
| RayJ06-19-05, 08:02 PM | I am going to agree with you that Batman's abilities can be covered in the way you are suggesting. I am working out the numbers and flipping through books right now working on such a build. My main concerns here are really in response to the campign setting in general, so I'll give some relevant information. All monsters and NPCs the opponents will be facing are going to be powergamed like hell (most of them are already completed). I intend to make the PCs work very hard for their level advancements. This is primarily based on the fact that the players in general have very strong characters, more than willing to take care of themselves in a variety of situations. This player in particular is quite the oposite when it comes to his characters. He much prefers to play characters with deep roleplaying capabilities and becomes frustrated when his characters are less than able to keep up in combat with the others. Do you feel that such a mundane Batman character will be able to hold his own against monsters with enhanced templates and fully tweaked gish NPCs? If you think it is possible, list some specific things to point us in the right direction. I'm generally adept at character creation and optimization, but Rogue-type-characters are easily my weakest area as well as his. |
| Edymnion06-19-05, 10:07 PM | Here's a suggestion: Unearthed Arcana Class Varient, the Urban Ranger. Trades in a lot of the nature/animal stuff from the Ranger, and gives you good city abilities, very Batman like. Complete Adventurer, the Vigilante. It *IS* Batman. Right down to the picture, which is a halfling standing on top of a gargoyle statue on the top of a building in a giant black leather cape. It even gets the abilities you wanted. http://www.wizards.com/dnd/images/cx_gallery/86369.jpg |
| Hachiman06-19-05, 10:24 PM | Look into taking the vigilante prestige class. Just a bit of advice http://www.wizards.com/dnd/images/cx_gallery/86369.jpg |
| Aurotuli06-19-05, 10:47 PM | The vigilante and the Urban Ranger are both good choices. In fact, I would say use both. Be an Urban Ranger until you qualify for Vigilante. Or perhaps just create a new class based on the Ranger, the Rogue*, and the Vigilante. *(I note that Camouflage/ HiPS are added to the selectable specials of the Wilderness Rogue.) |
| SnipingRanger0706-19-05, 10:47 PM | Maybe ninja, since they can go invisible at second level. Then monk would be good as a mix to that. some prcs are good, but not sure which ones, I normally am the ranged hider in the group. |

If you think it is possible, list some specific things to point us in the right direction. I'm generally adept at character creation and optimization, but Rogue-type-characters are easily my weakest area as well as his. Ok, first off, Powergaming != Weak roleplaying character. Weak Character != Strong Roleplaying character. In either case the two may or may not coincide, but they are not the same thing in and of themselves. Second, make the man use his head! He's playing a sneaking, vigilante type. This SCREAMS Rogue, with either fighter or monk levels. A Rogue/Fighter or Rogue/Ranger would quite nicely do the Batman thing. Grab Leadership and have the cohort be either a Wizard or Artificer for gadgety goodness. Concentrate on gear, both magical and mundane. Put most of your ranks in Hide and Move Silently. Perhaps grab a Ring of Blinking. And for heaven's sake play the character intelligently. The reason Batman rules isn't because batman charges into a fight without sizing things up first. When he does that, he gets his butt handed to him unless he's really lucky. Batman is the badass he is because he chooses the point of engagement, or (if the place is chosen for him) tries to arrange the territory so it favors him. In Gotham, Batman drops down into an alleyway, taking thugs by surprise. But the Joker will get the drop on Batman when he lures the caped crusader into his funhouse of doom, and Batman will be scrambling to try and find some way out of it. Really, batman's success boils down to Gear, Skill, and Intelligence. He has the goodies from Wayne Enterprises. He has the skills and training to fight, and he doesn't mind fighting dirty. He has the intelligence to plan ahead, forming plans and contingency plans to make the situation work for him, and he knows when to get the hell out of dodge. |

Since the thread is about changing classes around to reach a Batman archetype, I thought it was implicit. Sorry for any confusion. Also realize that in a fantasy setting, it is perfectly natural to use magic and/or magic-like abilities to replace what is lacking in technology. This is Dungeons and Dragons, not D20 Modern.Irrelevant. This is Batman, not a rogue/wizard multiclass who claims he's Batman because he can turn invisible. As I said, the only thing that makes Batman special is that he does not make use of the supernatural, with several very rare exceptions (I seem to vaguely remember he once used kryptonite or something). |

I think this works out. I do not, however, think this class should get casting - even as a(n Urban) Ranger. Use Magic Device is sufficient (or should be). I envision this class as an avenger type. Not necessarily out to avenge specific deeds, just out to do justice upon those that have evaded the law. Perhaps they are willing to use any means necessary to achieve 'justice', perhaps they hold true to a loose - or not so loose - personal code. Perhaps they wish to avenge only crimes of a specific type. Perhaps they are just serial killers striking out at those they think might one day turn bad - striking out for offenses imagined rather than heard of or witnessed. How does this work for you? It is not the Warlock, but then what you were asking for didn't really match the warlock. Oh, I expect Use Magic Device is responsible for many of your PC's batman-like 'powers'. As with the true batman, its all in the gear and knowing when/how to best make use of it. |
| RayJ06-20-05, 05:42 AM | Thanks to everyone for your suggestions. I sat down with the player and we worked out creating a core class using the abilities we thought Batman deserves. Most of the abilities come from the monk and rogue class abilities and progressions were toned down a bit to compensate. We added a few spell-like abilities based on some of the warlock invocations for some useful gameplay effects. We have some playtesting to do to see how it works through all the mechanics but your input has been invaluable. It is a bit overpowered compared to most core classes, but for this campaign it is probably underpowered in respect to the other player characters (since they are all multi-classed and severely tweaked) If any of you would like to see the class for yourselves, just let me know. |
| CaoSlayer06-20-05, 05:55 AM | jejeje, nice concept. If you want a 100% batman now you need batmanīs gachets, including in the campaign an artificier from eberron or a gnome artificier from magic of faerun would be neat. also get the leadership feat and name your cohort robin. |
| RayJ06-20-05, 07:10 AM | There is a PC artificer in the campaign (who has been making Batman's gadgets for some time now) I'm even including a Self-Propelled Vehicle to him free of charge to represent his Batmobile. Searching through A&EG and other books to select the gear for his utility belt (Belt of Many Pockets) The character looks to be the coolest PC in the campaign. What's more is that the party will be needing "Bruce Wayne's" services for transportation and the like on various missions for the king (Wayne Enterprises provides their benefactor with Kanto's Lament for transportation) and as such the mystical Batman will appear whenever the party gets into an undesirable situation. |
