CHAOS ASSASSIN

“Veni, vidi, assassinati! But you must do it in the way that everyone sees you. That totally rocks.”
~ Merrion Amavain, Elf Chaos Assassin

Most assassins like to handle things with subtlety, guile, stealth and a blade hidden wherever it can. Such is not the way of the Chaos Assassin, who rather prefer to assassinate in a much different way, by walking up to you, whispering into your ear “You’re gonna die, man”, and then you do. You just do. Seriously, a Chaos Assassin just told you you’re gonna die, so you are. There’s no escaping death when this guy is around.

History: The history of the Chaos Assassin dates way back. It was founded by an Armacalypse by the name of Randh’biel, who had developed the powers he was granted by his genetic code further than any of his peers, and taught his students his ways. Eventually it was discovered that other races, although not having such an inherent link to chaos as the Armacalypse could also learn to wield the power of a Chaos Assassin.

Adventures: Those who chose the way of the Chaos Assassin join the Order of Armasis, who train them in chaotic ways of assassination. People who join the order are of the kind who like to make a nice piece of gold every once in a while, and aren’t afraid of killing to get it. However, they prefer to assassinate in ways that are rather unorthodox, because such is the way of assassinating in chaotic ways.

Characteristics: Chaos Assassins are mostly a rash folk, brawlers mostly, which stems largely from their philosophy that an enemy should be as dead as possible as soon as possible. The deader and sooner the better.

Aligment: Chaos Assassins must be of chaotic alignment to be able to retain their link to the powers of chaos and use their abilities. Aside from that, there are both good and evil Chaos Assassins. The evil ones mostly kill for pleasure, whilst the good ones kill for a just society of freedom, and the neutral ones don’t care whom they kill, as long as they get paid.

Religion: Chaos Assassins don’t worship Lawful gods. They hardly worship Neutral ones either. Chaos is their way, and so should it be as well for the gods they worship. Kord, Olidammara and Erythnul are favourites amongst them.

Races: The most Chaos Assassins are Armacalypse. They were the first to become Chaos Assassins and over time it has almost become a tradition to them to have at least one member of the family become a Chaos Assassin. Elves make quite good Chaos Assassins well because they are nimble and agile figures and enjoy freedom. Humans, as with any other class, take well to the ways of the Chaos Assassin due to their adaptability and pragmatic views on things. Gnomes, as the mischievous and chaotic beings they are, make especially good Chaos Assassins because of their size and wit. Halflings are largely less seen as Chaos Assassins, but because they are agile and dextrous they make fine Chaos Assassins as well. Orcs take up the mantle of the Chaos Assassin rather well, because they are strong and find the ways of chaos easy. They take up the bulk of the evil Chaos Assassins, but also the bulk of the more stupid ones. If you see a Chaos Assassin plowing through rows of guards to get to a duke to assassinate, it’s probably an Orc. Dwarf Chaos Assassins are extremely rare, due to their lawful nature, and the few chaotic ones amongst them are so gruff and rude that they don’t get far in the order and are kicked out at an early stage.

Other Classes: Chaos Assassins are looked at with a frown and a smile by members of other classes. I mean, really, who calls themself an assassin when they walk right up to their target and says “Hi, I’m here to deliver your death!” They value their efficiency in combat, however.

Role: The Chaos Assassin’s role in the party is mostly as a damage dealer, and preferably as fast, as soon, and as much as possible.

GAME RULE INFORMATION
Abilities: Dexterity is the most important for a Chaos Assassin, because a lot of his special abilities consist of ranged attacks, and they still need to have a level of stealth in their job with Hide and Move Silently. Chaos Assassins may walk up to you and stab you in the face, but they don’t want to have to fight through a whole army to get to you.
Strength is important for a Chaos Assassin because when they cannot use their abilities anymore, the have to rely on dealing damage physically, and some of their abilities are also Strength-based.
Intelligence is important to a Chaos Assassin because they have to be cunning and they also get more skill points from a high Int score.

Weapon and Armour Proficiencies: The Chaos Assassin is proficient with light and medium armour, no shields, and simple and martial weapons.

Two-Weapon Fighting: At 1st level, the Chaos Assassin gains Two-Weapon Fighting as a bonus feat.

Wind Serpent: At 1st level, the Chaos Assassin gets a Wind Serpent (http://forums.gleemax.com/showthread.php?p=15483261#post15483261) as a special companion to take care of and take with him on his missions by the leaders of the Order of Armasis. The Wind Serpent advances in the same way a Druid’s Animal Companion does. Substitute the master’s Druid levels for Chaos Assassin levels.

1st Chaos Technique: At 2nd level, the Chaos Assassin must choose a path to follow, which influences which techniques he gains as he advances in Chaos Assassin levels.

If he chooses the Path of the Shadow Blade he gains access to the Chaos Strike Technique. This technique can be used 1 + 1/4 Chaos Assassin levels times per day. He must wield a slashing or piercing weapon to use this technique. He gains +1 on attack and damage rolls, and the damage becomes energy damage.

Roll 1d10: 1-2 acid damage, 3-4 cold damage, 5-6 electricity damage, 7-8 fire damage, 9-10 sonic damage.

If he chooses the Path of the Hidden Shooter he gains access to the Chaos Shot Technique. This technique can be used 1 + ¼ Chaos Assassin levels times per day. He must wield a ranged weapon to use this technique, but it may not be a throwing weapon. He gains a +1 bonus on attack and damage rolls, and the damage becomes energy damage. Roll 1d10 and see above for the resulting kind of energy damage.

If he chooses the Path of the Chaos Flower he gains access to the Chaos Sphere technique. This technique can be used 1 + ¼ Chaos Assassin levels times per day, and he cannot use this technique when wearing medium or heavy armour. He channels the energy of chaos through his weapon (or hands if he isn’t currently wielding a weapon) and fires a ball of energy out of it. This technique has a range of 25 + 5/level and deals 1d8/2 levels (max 6d8) energy damage. Roll 1d10 and see above for the resulting kind of energy damage.

Chaos Corruption: At 3rd level the Chaos Assassin’s body starts to mutate as it becomes corrupted by the power of chaos. He can designate one part of his body to become corrupted. The designated bodypart’s colour changes slightly to become more like a deep shade of purple.

Bodypart Benefits
Head +1 damage on Chaos Flower techniques, +1 on Will saves, +2 on Intimidate checks, -2 on Disguise checks
Arm +1 on melee damage rolls, +1 on Fort saves, +2 on Climb checks
Hand +1 on ranged damage rolls, attacks have 10% chance to stun for 1 turn, +2 on Disable Device checks
Legs base speed increases by 5 foot (except when wearing heavy armour), +1 on Ref saves, +2 on Move Silently checks

2nd Chaos Technique: At 8th level, the Chaos Assassin gains access to his second Chaos Technique.

If he chose the Path of the Shadow Blade at level 2, he gains access to the Chaos Blow Technique. This technique can be used once per day at level 8. He can use it once more for every 4 Chaos Assassin levels past 8th (2 times at level 12, 3 at 16th, etc.). He must wield a slashing or piercing weapon to use this technique. He gains +4 on attack and damage rolls, and the damage becomes energy damage. Roll 1d10 and look on the above table to find the resulting kind of energy damage.

If he chose the Path of the Hidden Shooter at level 2, he gains access to the Chaos Dishot Technique. This technique can be used once per day at level 8. He can use it once more for every 4 Chaos Assassin levels past 8th (2 times at level 12, 3 at 16th, etc.). He must wield a ranged weapon to use this technique, but it may not be a throwing weapon. He gains +4 on attack and damage rolls, and the damage becomes energy damage. Roll 1d10 and look on the above table to find the resulting kind of energy damage.

If he chose the Path of the Chaos Flower at level 2, he gains access to the Chaos Burst Technique. This technique can be used once per day at level 8. He can use it once more for every 4 Chaos Assassin levels past 8th (2 times at level 12, 3 at 16th, etc.). He cannot use this technique when wearing medium or heavy armour. He unleashes a burst of chaotic energy from his body that spreads out around him to damage all enemies around him. This technique has a range of 20 feet and deals 1d8/2 levels (max 6d8) energy damage. Roll 1d10 and see above for the resulting kind of energy damage (roll once for the kind of energy damage, NOT for every single enemy hit).

Increased Chaos Corruption: At level 11 the Chaos Assassin’s corruption by the power of chaos increases further. The bodypart he designated at 3rd level changes more, becoming slightly see-through and with purple lightning-like energy crackling inside.

Bodypart Benefits
Head +2 damage on Chaos Flower techniques, +2 on Will saves, +4 on Intimidate checks, -2 on Disguise checks
Arm +2 on melee damage rolls, +2 on Fort saves, +4 on Climb checks
Hand +2 on ranged damage rolls, attacks have 20% chance to stun for 1 turn, +4 on Disable Device checks
Legs base speed increases by 10 foot (except when wearing heavy armour), +2 on Ref saves, +4 on Move Silently checks

3rd Chaos Technique: At 14th level, the Chaos Assassin gains access to his third Chaos Technique.

If he chose the Path of the Shadow Blade at 2nd level he gains access to the Chaos Whirlwind Technique. This technique can be used once per day at level 14. He can use it once more for every 4 Chaos Assassin levels past 14th. He must wield a slashing or piercing weapon to use this technique. He gains +5 on attack and damage rolls, and the damage becomes energy damage. The Chaos Assassin deals this damage to all enemies within five feet of himself. Roll 1d10 and look on the above table to find the resulting kind of energy damage.

If he chose the Path of the Hidden Shooter at 2nd level he gains access to the Chaos Volley Technique. This technique can be used once per day at level 14. He can use it once more for every 4 Chaos Assassin levels past 14th. He must wield ranged weapon to use this technique, but not a throwing weapon. The Chaos Assassin shoots his ranged weapon and the projectile splits into many. All enemies within 15 feet of the target are hit. The Chaos Assassin has a +5 bonus to attack and damage rolls with this technique. This technique cannot be used if the ceiling is less than 20 feet high. The technique deals energy damage rather than normal damage. Roll 1d10 and look on the above table to find the resulting kind of energy damage.

If he chose the Path of the Chaos Flower at level 2, he gains access to the Chaos Meteor Technique. This technique can be used once per day at level 14. He can use it once more for every 4 Chaos Assassin levels past 14th. He cannot use this technique when wearing medium or heavy armour. He channels the energy of chaos through his weapon (or hands if he isn’t currently wielding a weapon) and fires a large sphere of energy out of it. This technique has a range of 25 + 5/level and deals 1d12/2 levels energy damage. Roll 1d10 and see above for the resulting kind of energy damage.

Complete Chaos Corruption: At level 19 the Chaos Assassin’s corruption by the power of chaos increases to its maximum. The bodypart he designated at 3rd level changes more. It now looks like the bodypart is made out of pure energy. This change is only cosmetic in nature, however.

Bodypart Benefits
Head +4 damage on Chaos Flower techniques, +4 on Will saves, +6 on Intimidate checks, -2 on Disguise checks
Arm +4 on melee damage rolls, +3 on Fort saves, +6 on Climb checks, always 25% chance of a melee attack’s damage becoming energy damage
Hand +4 on ranged damage rolls, attacks have 30% chance to stun for 1 turn, +6 on Disable Device checks, always 25% chance of a ranged attack’s damage becoming energy damage
Legs base speed increases by 20 foot (except when wearing heavy armour), +4 on Ref saves, +6 on Move Silently checks

4th Chaos Technique: At 20th level, the Chaos Assassin gains access to his fourth and final Chaos Technique.

If he chose the Path of the Shadow Blade at 2nd level he gains access to the Chaos Hurricane Technique. This technique can be used once per day at level 20. He must wield a slashing or piercing weapon to use this technique. He gains +8 on attack and damage rolls, and the damage becomes energy damage. The Chaos Assassin deals this damage to all enemies within five feet of himself. Roll 1d10 and look on the above table to find the resulting kind of energy damage.

If he chose the Path of the Hidden Shooter at 2nd level he gains access to the Chaos Rockets Technique. This technique can be used once per day at level 20. He must wield ranged weapon to use this technique, but not a throwing weapon. The Chaos Assassin shoots his ranged weapon and the projectile splits into many. All enemies within 30 feet of the target are hit. The Chaos Assassin has a +8 bonus to attack and damage rolls with this technique. This technique cannot be used if the ceiling is less than 20 feet high. The technique deals energy damage rather than normal damage. Roll 1d10 and look on the above table to find the resulting kind of energy damage.

If he chose the Path of the Chaos Flower at level 2, he gains access to the Chaos Flare Technique. This technique can be used once per day at level 20. He cannot use this technique when wearing medium or heavy armour. He unleashes a burst of chaotic energy from his body that spreads out around him to damage all enemies around him. This technique has a range of 30 feet and deals 1d12/2 levels energy damage. Roll 1d10 and see above for the resulting kind of energy damage (roll once for the kind of energy damage, NOT for every single enemy hit).

Okay, I’ll try to review it but it’s just what I think. I’m not much of a balance tester.

The lifecaster’s class skills (and the key ability for each skill) are Balance (Dex), Climb (Str), Craft (Int), Decipher Script (Int), Disable Device (Int), Disguise (Cha), Escape Artist (Dex), Forgery (Int), Gather Information (Cha), Hide (Dex), Intimidate (Cha), Knowledge (dungeoneering) (Int), Knowledge (the planes) (Int), Listen (Wis), Move Silently (Dex), Open Lock (Dex), Profession (Wis), Search (Wis), Sense Motive (Wis), Sleight of Hand (Dex), Spot (Wis), Swim (Str), Tumble (Dex), Use Rope (Dex).
Skill Points at 1st level: (6 + Int modifier) x 4

I like the skills and the HD and points look good for a class made to be an assassin. So kudos to you on this aspect.

Weapon and Armour Proficiencies: The Chaos Assassin is proficient with light and medium armour, no shields, and simple and martial weapons.

Two-Weapon Fighting: At 1st level, the Chaos Assassin gains Two-Weapon Fighting as a bonus feat.

The Wind Serpent advances in the same way a Druid’s Animal Companion does. Substitute the master’s Druid levels for Chaos Assassin levels.

The Weapon and Armour sound good, and I have no problem with the two weapon fighting. The Wind serpent is an intresting pet, Not sure why he gets it but I don't think it unbalances it too much. Maybe from a balance stand point compare it to other animals the druids gets, but overall i'm not too good a judge on animals

The Shadow Blade technique dosen't have any duration so I assume its a single strike or does the effect last for a certain amount of rounds? The random part of it could be its greatest strength flavor wise, but also it might be weak powerwise. The same goes for Choas Shot Technique, is it a buff or just one strike with the bonus.

The Chaos sphere deserves its own paragraph. For some odd reason all I can think about right now is to Shout HADDDOOOOOKEEEEENNNNNNNN and save the day. Its intresing, funny, random, but definatly intresting. Seems balanced as a blasting ability, it scales well.

The later versions of the Shadow Blade make this class more or less a giant walking chaos top, which might be what your going for. The Choas Techniques seem balanced, A little funny, but overall well done. But the duration would be best if fleshed out more.

Chaos Corruption: At 3rd level the Chaos Assassin’s body starts to mutate as it becomes corrupted by the power of chaos. He can designate one part of his body to become corrupted. The designated bodypart’s colour changes slightly to become more like a deep shade of purple.

Code:

Hand +1 on ranged damage rolls, attacks have 10% chance to stun for 1 turn, +2 on Disable Device checks
Legs base speed increases by 5 foot (except when wearing heavy armour), +1 on Ref saves, +2 on Move Silently checks

Well, these bonuses are well odd for the most part. This is like a mini incarnum like ability that grants mini bonuses to several things at once, but without the essential boost to make it more powerful. Does the Chaos assassin have the ability to cast spells? Or dose it just apply to the Flower technique? Because the Spell damage is intresting to give to a class with no spells. Arm is bland but not overpowered. On the hand abilities is there a DC on the Stun chance or is it just a flat chance to stun? Depending on the answer it could make the ability very powerful or weak, so I don't know what to say. The speed seems a little small, but I guess it works.

Beyond what I have said about the abilities, the class itself looks really bare. There are a lot of dead levels, with not much keeping the player in the class beyond the first few levels.

My suggestions: maybe include ToB Maneuvers, Iron Heart, Shadow Hand, Setting Sun and maybe your own custom Chaos inspired school relying on fate to deal the final blow. Then you could roll the Techniques into maneuvers and make it a simpler system. Or maybe some spells that fit, like the Telflamer shadow lord list or, the Assassin spell list so that the Spell power makes more sense. Hopefully you can read all this without much trouble and hope this class gets the attention it deserves.

Thanks for reviewing it. I don't mind if your English is rough, I myself am not a native English speaker so I make an occasional mistake as well.

The Wind Serpent was the class maker's idea (Waylanderx), and we decided to not make it too strong. It's pretty much like a medium Viper with wings and a breath weapon.

It's indeed just a single strike, except that the kind of damage the strike deals is different.

:D That is awesome and totally fits in with the class.

We'll certainly look into that.

The "spell" thing is something left behind from an earlier draft. See, the Path of the Chaos Flower used to be seperate and accessible to all Chaos Assassins and was called "Chaos Spell" rather than "Chaos Technique".

Beyond what I have said about the abilities, the class itself looks really bare. There are a lot of dead levels, with not much keeping the player in the class beyond the first few levels.

That's what I thought myself, so we're looking to include some more things.

ToB maneuvers sound good. However, neither I nor Waylanderx currently possess the book, although I have a little knowledge of how maneuvers work. A custom Chaos school sounds like a nice idea. I don't think we'll add spells, my friend told me that he specifically didn't want them to rely on those.

Well I'm glad your okay with my comments, and I look forward to the improvements made to the class. To note I'm not much of a ToB master so you might need to enlist some other help in that department, but I'll try to help as best I can.
