| Tenken06-27-05, 05:41 PM | Is there any way that my chaotic good character can take a some sort of monk variant class? Are there any wotc materials that present a variant monk that allows chaotic alignments? I can use any WotC books, dragon magazines, and any other WotC published materials. |
| Calibron06-27-05, 06:10 PM | Nope(as far as I know). Monastic training requires a Lawful(structured) mindset, chaotics would get bored/frustrated too easily. |
| Zsasz_Diedne06-27-05, 06:49 PM | The Shou Disciple from Unapproachable East is somewhat geared towards ex-monks, allowing for flurry with martial weapons and increasing unarmed damage, no alignment restriction. Also take a look at the Sohei from Oriental Adventures for a Lawful raging Monk angle. As for the structured mindset...the Monk's Lawful alignment requirement as well as his and the Paladin's multiclassing restrictions are the result of trying to appease the RPGA dorks, who for some reason don't understand that a chaotic fighter can (and is to be what he is) be just as focused. |
| MasterOfPsychic06-27-05, 07:01 PM | anyway, with that kinda respect to the rules, why don't you ask the DM to ignore the alignmet restriction |
| Tenken06-27-05, 07:04 PM | The reason I need monk classes is so that I can get the Sparring Dummy from the book Arms and Equipment Guide. To get its benefits, you have to have at least one level of monk :( It really sucks, coz I like playing the CG character. I play him like Wolverine, who's definitely CG in my opinion (and more importantly, my DM's). If I can't find any way to take the monk level, then yeah, I'll talk to him about it and ask him if it's okay. I just figured that if they have variant paladins that doesn't have to be LG, maybe they'd have a monk that could be chaotic. |
| Joni-san06-27-05, 07:25 PM | To quote the SRD Ex-Monks A monk who becomes nonlawful cannot gain new levels as a monk but retains all monk abilities. Like a member of any other class, a monk may be a multiclass character, but multiclass monks face a special restriction. A monk who gains a new class or (if already multiclass) raises another class by a level may never again raise her monk level, though she retains all her monk abilities. However, a DM is allowed to bend the rules. (Rule 0). |
| Calibron06-27-05, 07:27 PM | Wolverine as Chaotic Good? Nevermind, I don't even want to know. |
| Nephlite06-27-05, 07:37 PM | The Pugilist is like the Monk because he fights unarmed. Though the Pugilist wears warmor because he doesnt 'have Wiadom bonus to Ac. So while there are few non-lawful Monks, there are classes similar. |
| seans2307-01-05, 03:54 PM | Wolverine as Chaotic Good? Nevermind, I don't even want to know. Wolverine as Chaotic? He's studied as a samurai, and although he is sometimes unable to control his anger, he still lives by a strict code. he seems true neutral to me. He doesn't have enough respect for life to be good. |
| Verdaloth07-01-05, 04:55 PM | In beoynd monks there are crooked monks, its a 13 lvl prc class, very nice abilits. Reach haste flurry freedom of movement. |
| AramilWindwalker07-01-05, 07:16 PM | Maybe he could let ninja(Cadv) substitute, it gets the wis to ac like a monk, but doesn't need to be lawful. |
| thegreatbuddha07-01-05, 07:18 PM | Why do you need the Sparring Dummy? For the 10ft step? If you can beat a tumble check dc 40ish, you can 10ft step per OA rules. |
| Vaalingrade Ashland07-01-05, 07:36 PM | Ignore all class based alignment restrictions. They rely on poor logic and a poor balancing issue. |
| Zucrous07-01-05, 08:37 PM | The Reason why monks have to be lawful to keep gaining levels as one is becasue their class is based all around discipline. |
| Vaelan07-01-05, 09:14 PM | The Reason why monks have to be lawful to keep gaining levels as one is becasue their class is based all around discipline. And? I see nothing in the rules about chaotic characters being wholly incapable of being disciplined, nor do I see anything that states that lawful characters are disciplined. This line of reasoning doesn't even hold up under the PHB's assumptions about alignment. |
