Sanole

Name: Sanole Zebantori

Race: Human

Age: 19 ish, age was never of much importance to him

Background (short version because I just woke up): Born into a wealthy family of merchants and nobles. Had a twin brother. During a noble dispute was takin by rival noble family, but was stolen back by a lost uncle who once fought for the courts but became an outlaw. Uncle would not return Sanole but instead kept him as an outlaw. Than blah blah blah, the family becomes really powerful, greedy and evil. The noble brother becomes trained by hired high mages and the top swordsmen of the courts, and needs to kill Sanole to kill off the remaining blood of the family so he can become king. Sanole is sent off to live with a pair of halflings (gnomes) deep in the woodlands. Learns the way of magic and music from the gnomes. Must leave in order to keep the gnomes from being put in danger, now must find a way to defeat brother all while learning of the misfortune his true family has brought to the land.

Class ideas? I tend to stay clear of thief and bard, but I'm up for any suggestions.

((This is my first post, and first couple days of getting into D&D))

I see a Fighter/Wizard/Eldritch Knight with ranks in perform.

Sorcerer/Rogue with ranks in perform and bluff (I know you don't want rogue, but you don't have to be the thieving kind, you can be a skillsman instead.. there are litterally thousands of faces a Rogue can take..)

Given his outlaw past, and his 'learning the ways of magic and music' from the gnomes, I'm going to suggest an unusual combination: Ranger/Bard. At this point, he probably advances mainly as a Bard, with how long he lived as an outlaw determining how many Ranger levels he has.

I see a Fighter/Wizard/Eldritch Knight with ranks in perform.
I'm thinking the same idea, but leaning towards Duskblade. Has the added benefit of providing the desired flavor from day 1, and never needing anything added to fit the role.

Yeah, that would be a good alternative. The issue is that the OP is new to d&d so probably doesn't have lots of supplements yet :) If he does, however, you're right.

How about this one? Sanole is destined to be king, so how about something along the lines of a bard/marshall? Tons of diplomacy, bluff and sense motive. Tons of knowledge skill as well as bardic knowledge. The marshall's auras would synergize rather well with the bardic music. By himself, he's probably not going to be able to stand up against his evil twin brother, but with the help of some skilled friends he would be quite powerful.

Also, if you DM is willing - let the gnomes teach Sanole their minor racial magics: speak with animal, dancing lights, ghost sound and prestidigitation all 1/day certainly gives his magic a boost. Or if not that perhaps the gnomish illusion familiarity which would give a boost to a lot of the bardic magic.

You are going to have a character with tons of roleplaying opportunities that gives a gigantic boost to nearly every action that anyone else in his party takes. Couple that with the leadership feat at sixth level (and if you have access to the Heroes of Battle book commander auras and perhaps the Legendary Leader PrC) then you'll have a passive buff master with a slew of cohorts. The perfect image for a deposed king returning to reclaim his legacy.

How about a Druid? perhaps a cleric with the Nature and animal domains? Ranger is also a definate option. Mayby look into the Paladin of Freedom from the SRD, because of the entire outlaw thing. Mayby a Swashbuckler/Barbarian? The possibilities are endless.

Chipping in to agree with LordKudzu's post. While it's probably the last thing I would have thought of, after reading it I can't picture the character going another way. It really seems like the best way to go.

I'll second Ranger/Bard, as you're new to the game.

For your Favoured Enemy, I'd either go with Human (because he knows loads of humans are after him, and trains accordingly), or some random race representing the natural enemy of the forest gnomes.

Sounds like an interesting character, have fun :D

Bard is a must. Gnomes are master illusionists and their favored class is Bard.

Beyond that, maybe a little Ranger early on, but I wouldn't see it as neccessary, as you can live deep in the woods and not grow up to be a ranger.

Marshal might be another good one for later. It honestly depends on if the character has a rightful claim to the throne and if people are going to support his claim against his brother. Bards make excellent leaders, and so do Marshals, but Bard is the best class that mixes the concept of magic and music, and it's probably the best beginner class imho because it can do a little bit of everything.

His brother is going to be some kind of Gish, like a Duskblade.

i could do this concept on -any- class. its not hard.

you could even be a cleric that follows a concept instead of a god.

heck, psychic warriors fit the bill well enough.

A scout/sorcerer could work. Focus on illusion. Don't forget ranks in Perform. Have fun!
