In a recient campaign, one of the players in the group had a character die just at the threshold of his next level (Dwarf fighter). The dwarf began the adventure only a handful of experience points away from the next level, before he died. The portion of the adventure he did participate in before dying was enough to put him to the next level.

He had 5750 going into the adventure. 3rd level, almost 4th.
He earned 500 exp on the adventure before dying.

My question is... what order do I apply the experience points?

Scenario 1. Death First then Reward EXP:
1 The dwarf falls to the mid of pervious level, ie 2nd level: exp drop to 2000
2 then reward experience: Exp now become 2500

Scenario 2. Reward EXP First then Death:
1 reward experience... experience now 6250. Character is now 4th level
2 then apply death penalty. Character drops to mid of previous level: now has 4500 exp, and returns to third level.

Which is the correct procedure?

My understanding is that you would apply experience first. Technically, the character gained the experience before dying, but the totals usually aren't given out until the adventure is over. Because dying pretty much ends his adventure, I'd say the XP gets applied, and *then* raising kicks in.

Especially because the level loss isn't due to dying but due to raising anyway.
