Character needed to round out party [Archive] - Wizards Community

I am going to be starting a new urban campaign soon and my wife needs a character to round out the party. We already have a rouge and I am going to be a Mind Blade. The DM wants us to be a group that wont draw attention to our selves to much. But he also wants us to be somewhat underhanded. She was thinking of playing a Swashbuckler, but she's not sure. What else would be a good character for her to play. I have heard of what I believe is called a Crimson Corsair (not sure if that is right). What book would that be found in. We aren't really concerned if we have a magic user or not since we will be able to buy potions as needed.

Also what would be a good race choice for my Mind Blade? Remember I will probably be the main fighter in the group.

As far as a race for your soulknife, if you're going to be the party tank, an elan's ability to soak damage will probably help you survive low levels. They may not be optimal choices at higher levels, but a couple power points can go a long way at the beginning.

For your wife; Beguiler. Beguiler, Beguiler Beguiler. Their spell list makes for a great low key, sinister character. Think John Constantine.

05-26-07, 05:39 PM I agree, beguiler is a great choice (PHB2). A cleric wouldn't hurt, they can be played as just about anything and have a great selection of utility spells, not to mention healing, which your party may need with low HD.

05-26-07, 05:56 PM Soulknife is... a skirmisher, not a tank. It's also somewhat inferior. Get out of it ASAP. Soulbow (from Comp.Psi and also here (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/ex/20060403a&page=2)) is in all ways superior. Souknife 2 / Ranger 2 / Barbarian 1 would be a nice mix. Be a Human, because you have a good skill list and you need the feats. An Elan won't have the power points to actually use his abilities... don't bother unless you're going to play a Psion.

Psions, as it happens, can be excellent sneaky guys, and some have fantastic skill & power lists. Consider the Telepath (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/psionic/classes/psion.htm) for your wife's character, so social skills and powers will be on her class list. From psi charm to suggestion to psi dominate, it's a great manipulator list.

Alternately, a cloistered cleric (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/variant/classes/variantCharacterClasses.htm#clericVarian tCloisteredCleric) with the Trickery domain is skilled and sneaky, and is still a Cleric.

Options that fit an urban based game can include pretty much anything, but a few come to mind more easily.

Urban Ranger variant.

Factotum.

Psion.

Beguiler.

Swashbuckler.

Other classes can easily fit in as well, but to round out a party, it is best to know what the rest of the party is.

05-27-07, 01:06 AM I'm always fond of bards in a city based campaign. However, one concept I've always wanted to try out was a favored soul of Olidammara. It seems like someone who can heal would be great for the campaign.

Ranger might do the job, if there are wands available.

Cleric1/Monkmany works.

Cleric1/any halfway sneaky class also works.
