Cheerleader of the Dead

Ra! Ra! Ree! Bite off their knee!
Ra Ra Ras! Bite off their other knee!

Sure, anyone can raise the dead. But whoever consider's the dead's feelings? Don't they get lonely? Don't they get dispirited(literally)? Don't they need encouragement? This is where the the Cheerleader of the Dead steps in.

Most cheerleaders are human. Gnomes with a twisted sense of humor often make excellent cheerleaders.

Hit Die: d6

Requirements
In order to be a cheerleader of the dead, a character must fulfill all of the following criteria.
Base Save Bonus: Ref +5
Feats: Iron Will, Leadership, Skill Focus: Perform (Cheering)
Spells: Must be able to spontaneously cast 3rd level arcane spells.
Special: Must make squad. Must have Bardic Music ability.

Class Skills
The cheerleader's class skills (and the key ability for each skill) are Balance (Dex), Bluff (Cha), Concentration (Con), Craft (Int), Intimidate (Cha), Perform (Cha), Profession (Wis), Spellcraft (Int), and Tumble (Dex).

Skill Points at Each Level: 4 + Int modifier

Class Level BAB F/R/W Special
1st +0 0/2/0 Animate Undead, Bardic Dirge
2nd +1 0/3/0 Desecrating Cheer
3rd +2 1/3/1 Rebuke
4th +3 1/4/1 Go Team Go!
5th +3 1/4/1 Create Undead
6th +4 2/5/2 Undead B-Squad
7th +5 2/5/2 Painful Cheer
8th +6 2/6/2 Create Greater Undead
9th +6 3/6/3 Undead A-Squad
10th +7 3/7/3 Bring it On!

Class Features
The following are class features of the cheerleader of the dead prestige class.
Weapon and Armor Proficiency: A cheerleader of the dead gains no new weapon or armor proficiencies.
Spells Per Day/Spells Known: At each cheerleader level, the character gains new spells per day (and spells known, if applicable) as if she had also gained a level in a spellcasting class to which she belonged before adding the prestige class level. She does not, however, gain any other benefit a character of that class would have gained. If the character had more than one spellcasting class before becoming a cheerleader, the player must decide to which class to add each cheerleader level for the purpose of determining spells per day and spells known.
Animate Dead (Sp): Your cheers are loud enough to wake the dead! Literally! Once per day you can animate dead as a spell-like ability whose effective caster level is the total of all her bardic spellcaster class levels. For this spell she need not supply any material components, and her Bardic abilities supply the verbal components of the spell.
Bardic Dirge: A Cheerleader of the Dead's 'Bardic Music' ability can affect undead if she so chooses. Furthermore, when using her Bardic Music abilities on undead, she gains a +2 bonus to all Perform checks. However playing for the dead is not very endearing to the living and thus she suffers a -4 penalty to all Perform checks when the audience is alive.
Desecrating Cheer (Sp): At 2nd level, the cheerleader begins to exert her enthusiasm over undead. When using her Bardic Music ability to affect undead, she is continuously surrounded by a 20-foot-radius of negative energy. The effect is otherwise identical to the desecrate spell (see the Player's Handbook).
Rebuke: For those times when the undead are playing on the wrong team, it's important to be able to make 'em switch sides. The cheerleader is able to rebuke undead as a cleric of her effective prestige class level. These levels stack with any other class levels that provide the rebuke undead ability.
Go Team Go! (Su): Let's admit it: undead aren't exactly the swiftest runners in the world. But that all changes when a cheerleader's on the scene! All undead affected by her Bardic Music ability gain a +10 bonus to their movement. Incorporeal undead are unaffected by this ability.
Create Undead: On attaining 5th level a cheerleader of the dead can create undead as a spell-like ability, once per day. She must still supply the requisite components, but the Verbal components are supplied by her bardic abilities. Caster level is equal to her total bardic spell caster levels.
Undead B-Squad (Su): There's no "I" in "cheerleader". Any undead created through the create undead class feature are automatically under her control (no Rebuke check needed). However she is still limited in the number of HD of undead she can command.
Painful Cheer (Su): It may not sound good to the other team, but she knows her boys love it! All undead under the affect of her Bardic Music abilities gain fast healing 2. This ability is in addition to any other effects gained through her Bardic Music ability.
Create Greater Undead: On reaching 8th level a Cheerleader of the Dead can create greater undead as a spell-like ability 1/day. She must still supply the requisite material components, but like her create undead ability she uses her bardic abilities as the verbal components. Effective caster level is equal to her total bardic spell caster levels.
Undead A-Squad (Su): All undead created through her create greater undead class feature are automatically under her control (with no Rebuke check needed). However, she is still limited in the number of HD of undead she can command.
Bring It On! (Su): The Cheerleader's in the top of her form and the prime of her (un)life! She doubles the effective number of HD of undead she can control through her Rebuke, animate dead, create undead, or create greater undead abilities. In addition, any Rebuke checks are with a +4 bonus.

BTW, you need to add under middle-age on the requirements. ;)

Ra! Ra! Ree! Bite off their knee!
Ra Ra Ras! Bite off their other knee!

That was great!

Dunno if it is balanced.
You might wish to make this class stack with bard levels for Bardic Music, and make Requiam a requirement.

Remarkable.

Savras

Edit: Or not. Requiam needs 12 ranks preform.

Thank you! I'm not sure what Requiem is (having never played a bard. I mean, I know what it means, but in terms of game play I'm not familiar with it). And I considered having bard levels stack with Bardic Music, but then I thought "all a bard has is his bardic music, bardic knowledge, and spells." If the two musics stacked, there would be no real reason to ever continue playing a bard. This way, your current bardic abilities can be used on undead, but they don't increase. that's why you have the other abilities. As for the balance issue, that was one thing I was concerned about. That's why I made the spell-like abilities dependent on total bard caster levels, instead of just total caster levels. Additionally, rebuke up until level 10 is only 1 level/PrC level, and that's pretty weak. With the medium BAB and only good Ref saves, and the d6 HD, I thought it was fairly balanced. But then my one drawback is that I've never playtested a single creation (except my fighting-monk class) and so I 'balance' things just by personal experience and intuition.

I never playtest.

I use intuition.

Hmm, I didn't mean gaining new abilities, but more uses- you get one use per day per bard level, no?

This PrC is much more powerful than either the Pale Master or True Necromancer. The ablility to Animate Dead without need for spell components 1/day is gained at 2nd level by the Pale Master, while this PrC gets it at first. Not even the True Necromancer gets to automatically control the undead that she creates, and she's partially a divine caster.

Requiem must be made a prerequisite (it allows a bard to use bardic music on undead, affecting half as many HD as the ability would normally affect living targets). The powers really need to be toned down. A lot.

Well that's not very hard considering True Necromancer sucks and Pale Master is right there behind it.

The ablility to Animate Dead without need for spell components 1/day is gained at 2nd level by the Pale Master, while this PrC gets it at first.

Here's the rub. Pale Master can be acheived at 6th level. Cheerleader of the Dead can't be achieved until minimum 7th level (as a multiclass bard/sorcerer) which sucks since the spell-caster levels are based off bard levels. Therefore a straight bard can't get this PrC until 8th level. That's two levels longer than a pale master wizard. So with the one-level difference in abilities, that still puts the Pale Master gaining the ability one level earlier than the Cheerleader. Therefore there is no problem here.

Not even the True Necromancer gets to automatically control the undead that she creates, and she's partially a divine caster.

And again, the True Necromancer absolutely sucks. On the other hand the True Necromancer will be either a (mostly) full-fledged wizard or cleric, and having all the spells they can access. Additionally, the True Necromancer is going to have previous Rebuke levels, so they will always be stronger than a cheerleader (until level 10 PrC most likely). And really, not being able to control the undead you create is rather stupid. "ooh, I made a vampire. Too bad I can't control him now and he's ripping my throat out." Therefore this (highend) ability (and seeing as how it's the only ability you get at that particular level) is in no way overpowering. The character's still limited in the HD of undead they can control.

Requiem must be made a prerequisite (it allows a bard to use bardic music on undead, affecting half as many HD as the ability would normally affect living targets).

Well when I make PrCs, I make them so you don't need to go out and buy every supplement in existence in order to understand it. Since it's not in the PHB I won't require it. It's not fair to a newbie.
[QB]
The powers really need to be toned down. A lot.

I haven't really seen a reason to do so yet.:)

oh, I see what you mean. Nonetheless, a pure bard can't take this class until minimum 8th level, so that leaves 8 uses per day. That's probably more than enough.

The problem arises when a PrC is so good that a player would be crazy not to take it. This one is so good at creating and controlling undead that anyone who is thinking of playing an arcane caster in necromancy would be crazy not to play a bard to 8th level in order to take this PrC. That is why it is unbalanced. Heck, it's better than many divine necromancer PrCs.
snail shell

07-26-03, 06:59 AM
It may be overpowered, but not by too much. What is really important, artistically speaking, is that if you attach this PrC to an NPC your PCs will never E V E R forget that game session. They will accuse you, for the rest of your existence, of being completely insane.

And as a DM, I can't imagine a better compliment. I love it.

Again, I have to disagree. The only necromantic abilities is animate dead, create undead, and create greater undead. And since the bard gets virtually no other necromantic spells (except perhaps fear or scare), then he's at a serious loss compared to any other caster who at later levels could be dishing out Energy Drain or Wail of the Banshee. Remember, the additional spells per day only affect bard caster levels. And in return for this focus on the undead, the bard is giving up any bardic abilities past 10th level, any knowledge lore past 10th level. Since those are the very things that make up the class, I think it's a fair trade.

But since we're disagreeing I guess it's a question of whether or not other people think it's unbalanced.

I can see your position, and concede that you have some points in regards to the limitations that bards have with necromantic magic in general, assuming one isn't using the BoVD.

I don't know if you have the 3.5 rules or not, but they doubled the number of HD that Animate Dead creates and allows the caster to control. In addition, if Desecrate is in an area of an altar/shrine/etc. of the caster's deity (and I think one could reasonably assume that a Cheerleader of the Dead is evil, and might follow an evil deity), the number of undead created with Animate Dead doubles.

I realize that you are designing the PrC without taking anything from the splatbooks, but in practice there is nothing preventing their use with the PrC. Any thought on how Requiem would interact with Bardic Dirge? A correction to my description of the feat before is that it affects the same number of undead as the bardic music would, but for half the duration, not half the number.

If one wanted to use this in 3.5, how would you handle the Skill Focus(Perform) requirement? Perform is now split up like the Knowledge skills, so that the bard needs to separately develope Perform(Stringed Instruments), Perform(Wind Instruments), etc. The typical 3.5 bard is going to have two or more Perform skills.

okay, wow. I hadn't considered that. No, I don't have any of the 3.5 books. I didn't think the changes were enough (and you can download the 'revisions') to warrant buying the books again (on a tight budget). I certainly was not aware of the changes in Animate Dead as regards HD. I did know about the spell-level change (I think) as regards arcane spellcasters. On the upside you still only create zombies or skeletons which are rather weak compared to essentially anything at that point. And I didn't know about that addition to the Desecrate spell. I suppose I could put in the Requiem as a pre-req, and then match a bard's normal duration with a later level ability. As for the Skill Focus (Perform) feat, 2 things. 1)if I put in Requiem as a pre-req, then Skill Focus (Perform) would have to go. 2) The Skill Focus could be in any perform type, so long as the Skill Focus went towards something in Perform. However, in order for me to require Requiem as a pre-req., I would need to include it as a 'new feat' ability at the end of the post. And it just so happens that the one splatbook I don't own is the bardic/rogue one. I had heard that it wasn't worth it (and after looking through it) and I agree. So if you could be so kind as to post the feat for me I'll consider putting it in the class. Otherwise I'd prefer to keep things to the PHB (what folks do after that is up to them).

You'd be surprised. The spell doesn't just create humanoid undead. At 9th level, the lowest level a purely bardic Cheerleader of the Dead would be, you can create a Cloud Giant Skeleton, which is 17HD and has two claw attacks +18 that do 1d8+12 damage, as it has a 35 Str. One level more gets a 19HD young adult Red Dragon Skeleton. No breath weapon, but with Bite +17 (2d8+10), 2 claws +12 (2d6+5), 2 wings +12 (1d8+5) and a tail slap +12 (2d6+15) it doesn't need it. It's a CR 8 creature.

And the CotD could have two of them. Still sound rather weak? They've really boosted the ability of necromancy in terms of how many undead a caster can make and control.

Clearly, in 3.5 you would change the requirement to Skill Focus: Perform (Cheering)!!!

I ran this past my playtesters, and for balance, it worked pretty well in straight combat trials at melee. As all minion based classes it is a little overbalanced on stronghold defence. Weak at ranged. Does extra well (as all Bard classes do) at mixed group combat (especially when mixed with the Awaken Undead spell [SvSp Clr 6, Sor/Wiz 7] which gives average intellegence to low level undead and allows them to use weapons, armor, and stratagy). The only time I saw any real overpowering was with special undead at CotD LV 10 (too many ghost, vamp, and lich w/ class level followers).

Buffy the Vampire....I can see it now. She will clearly be added to my squad of undead prestige class foes to hit my players with. Oh, and you can bet she will be taking more than one for the team..... [Lichloved feat, enough said, BoVD]

the number of HD of undead they can control doubles at 10th level. That's 20 HD of undead, which is alot (compares to a 20th level cleric or so if I remember correctly).

Its in the Savage Species section, after the understandable period of nausea, I decided if I changed the race prereq and some of the abilities it'd be kinda cool. As the PrC was add CotD with it and it's a very disturbing. An ogre that causes nausea to anything with discernable anatomy and isn't blind with an army of undead that kills them in their sickened state.
