Cherry Picking the Ranger [Archive] - Wizards Community

11-12-04, 01:04 PM Who's brilliant idea was it to relocate the ranger's combat style feature from 1st level (3.0) to 2nd level (3.5)?

A character can still take a single level of fighter and gain an extra feat, armor and weapon proficiencies, etc...
A character can still take a single level of cleric and gain low level spells, domain powers and the ability to affect the undead.
A character can still take a single level of barbarian and gain rage, fast movement, more skill points, etc...

Taking your first level in the rogue class has some real benefits with the character gaining sneak attack, trapfinding and skill points to spare.

The ranger's combat style grants that class abilities apropriate to level 1.

The idea that every character will "cherry-pick" a level of ranger for its benefits doesn't hold water when all the character classes can be used in the same manner.

All things considered, I prefer the 3.5 ranger. However, I for one am putting the combat style feature back where it belongs, at level 1.

11-12-04, 01:14 PM You get other perks from a first level ranger. If all you care about is the combat style, you should take a fighter, not a ranger. First, rangers get 6 skill points, that's at least 24 skill points at 1st level. Second, rangers get a favored enemy.
They don't get as many hit points as fighter, nor do they get the ability to use heavy armour.

I don't speak orc, but what I am saying here is that all the core classes can be used for "cherry-picking" just as the ranger (3.0) could have been.

11-12-04, 01:49 PM In the 3.0 ranger, there was no reason to take level 2, 3, 4, etc. of the ranger class. Now, there are reasons to take the later levels. Plus, there are plenty of benefits to cherry-pick at the first level. Huge skill points, Track, favored enemy, saves... Just no TWF. Sorry.
