Civilized Barbarian concept [Archive] - Wizards Community

For my next character, I had the idea of a civilized Barbarian, say, maybe we grew up till his early teens in a tribe, but maybe war forced him to move to a City and say join the town guard or Military. With this being the case, I see a character like 11th century Celtic upper class or something along them lines, Barbaric to most nations, but still civilized in most ways.
What would be a good class to build this Barbarian into? Frenzied Berzerker is to wild and crazy for someone like this, but with Barbs being Chaotic only, it makes it tough to find a Military like class.
I'm likely going with a Long Spear or Greatsword, either go with the jump attack feats or the whirlwind feats to cover an area or just destroy single targets at a time.
So, with this in place, any ideas for what class to add to this guy? I'm not one for straight base classes.

Barbs can be neutral with respect to Law-Chaos

Actaully, they can't be lawful at all. So either evil, neutral, good or chaotic. Normally chaotic.

The "Military like class" sounds like Fighter.
That is the best representation I can think of the more formal training he would recieve if he joined the town guard or military.

I ment a Prestige class, like Kensai, Cavalier or Knight Protector. But there all Lawful classes.

Ask you DM to remove that restriction from this character (it doesn't really balance anything anyways) and problems solved. [Also see if you can get the illiterate ability taken away as well.]

Hmm, more of a raging fighter? That's kinda cool. :) I'm one of the few people who like the fighter class (Though not up to level 20), but I do like the Barbarian much better.
So yeah, maybe I will just ask him that.

I'm actually coming up with a sort of "civilized barbarian" sort of class right now.

The Dread Commando (Heroes of Battle) will be good once you can qualify for it.

As far as military classes that the Barbarian can get into... hrm... well... you could just Multiclass with Fighter (or my Warmaster) until you qualify for Dread Commando.

I'll second:

The Dread Commando (Heroes of Battle) will be good once you can qualify for it.

It's a great class for what you want to do, IMO. Figure out a way to get levels of it.

Scout, or maybe Ranger. Both of those could have strong uses in the military.

I always thought of a Barbarian as more of a special ops shock trooper for the military. You are not expected to live so your chaotic alignment is ignored, but when you survive you gain enough respect on honors that they continue to ignore your chaotic alignment till the next mission or fight.

That interesting, if you replaced the Rage feature with say, sneak attack, this would be more of a spec ops class. lol Tough, stealthy and powerful.
Sadly, I'm limited to the Complete Warriors, Complete Adventures, Complete Arcane, PHB and PHB2, thats all I have at the moment that I can use. Also have Liberis Morta (I think the name name of the book is) and the book of the undead, though normally we don't use those.

I know you don't have ToB, but, how should I say this tactfully... you should. Nothing says "death-on-a-stick" quite like a Warblade/Barbarian.

Barring that, Scout/Ranger/Barbarbarian/Highland Stalker kinda fits your niche.
