clarification of the first level of a class [Archive] - Wizards Community

11-02-04, 01:44 PM Im rather confused as to what I would get from the first level of a wizard or sorc class. Ive got a lvl 7 barb and I want a pet, would taking a spellcaster lvl let me have a familliar? If so, would this familiar have 1/2 my hp like most familiars do?

and how about skill points? would I recieve the lvl 1 skill points for that class or because my char will be achieving lvl 8 will I recieve the standard ammount for that class?

Also, do prestige classes count to your xp modifier? If I have 12 lvls of barb, 2lvls of a prestige class and 5 lvls of a different prestige class will I have an XP penalty?

Yes, taking a wiz or dorc level will let you get a familiar, and it would have half your hp.
You would get the standard amount of skill points for the class that you get, not the x4 amount.
As for the xp penalty, I don't think so, (but dont quote me on that, as I am not sure) as my group has always just ignored that part of the rules so I never read up on them.

PrCs never count towards multiclassing penalties. The line stating this was mistakenly left out of the 3.5 DMG, as is stated in the D&D 3.5 FAQ.

11-02-04, 01:55 PM 1.) Yes, the familiar would have one half your HP. It says the familiar gets half your total HP, not half your HP from the wizard/sorcerer class. So, yes.

2.) You only gain the standard skill points, as has already been stated.

3.) Prestige classes do not count towards XP penalties. This was supposed to be put in both 3.0 and 3.5, but they managed to forget both times around. However, the designers have stated that prestige classes don't give XP penalties.
