Class abilities gained late [Archive] - Wizards Community

Why are there so many classes that gain set feats/abilities at certain levels that they could have already chosen at earlier levels?

This means that if you want to specialise in that direction you potentially are better off leaving those feats till you get them for free with the class, rather than taking them earlier. But this discourages the very flavour that the class is trying to emulate, and means that other characters may get there before you, despite the appropriateness for your class!

Example: Thrallherd gets psionic charm at 3rd (8th character level minimum), so it discourages picking that feat earlier! But isn't he all about mind control? So why say to that character - "Don't pick psionic charm - wait till you get it for free at 8th level (overall)".

What do ppl think on this? Am I alone in finding it a bit silly?

Yeah, I agree. Thrallherd is the perfect example of such a case.

I'm not sure why the classes are designed like that. It would definately be better if Thrallherd got something unique rather than a rehashed psionic power. I guess it's hard to constantly have brand new material when WoTC is churning out so many books all the time. Overworked writers maybe?

Another fine example of this is the Reaping Mauler. A great grappling-based prc.....that gains Improved Grapple at 1st level.

When using that class IMC, I switch Improved Grapple with Clever Wrestling. Just seems to make more sense.
