I posted this on the DM one, but it was suggested that it is more suited for this section.
Im currently inventing a special class for a game Im doing. It is a fighting/spell casting type class (though it isnt the same as some of the PrC out there which do this). And I have been having a hard time deciding what amount of spells and how high of level they should go. I was thinking maybe using the rangers amount of spells but this class isnt as good a combatant as the ranger, and the cleric and sorcerer are too much magic. I have been leaning towards bard amount of spells lately but I cant make the final decision. Any advice or thoughts?

The bard's level of power seems a good compromise, I think you've got the right idea.

The weaker the class fights, the more you're going to have to compensate it some other way.

Use the bard as a model. Use the same spell progression, but work with the DM to create your own spell selection. 'Trade in' bardic music, skill points and knowledge checks for better weapon selection, higher BAB, a feat or two and then you're set.
