Class and Prestige Class Advice [Archive] - Wizards Community

08-04-05, 01:30 AM Okay, So I am becoming a player after having not actually played for a long stint. I know that I want to play an Arcane caster. Are there any suggestions for playing a strong Arcane character that can survive and become pretty powerful. What are your favorite Prestige Classes for Arcane users???

08-04-05, 01:50 AM There is no out and out answer for what you ask, but, on a personal note, I really enjoy mixing rogues with arcane spell casters and using arcane trickster. This adds extra damage to spells (because sneak attacks apply to magical attacks as long as they still deny dex or attack someone whos flatfooted).

I also really enjoy Metaphysical spellshaper. It's best used for clerics and other classes that can use restoration, but, it lowers the slot cost of metamagic feats by 1 at level 3 and it also allows you to convert those slots into ability damage instead at level 1. It also allows you to gain a bonus metamagic feat at level 2. It's a nice class with small requirements and only lasts 3 levels. The drawback however is that its in a book not directly ment for D&D, but fits NICELY into the system. Check with your dungeon master first, but it's from the book of erotic fantasys. Ironically, this class is the only class not related to sex.... at all.... makes you wonder why its even in the book?

08-04-05, 02:57 AM You should consider going straight wizard until you can get levels of archmage.

Wizards are one of the more difficult classes to play effectively, despite their potential power. Quite a task for a new player to take up.

Be sure to go to the character optimization board and read the wizard's handbook in the 3.5 class build sticky.

I like playing a human or grey elf. Feats I like are spell focus and greater spell focus for evocation, charm and necromancy to develop high DC's for spells that cover all three saving throw types, spell penetration and greater spell penetration and craft wondrous item.

08-04-05, 03:48 AM I personally find Daggerspell Mage (from Complete Adventurer) much better than arcane trickster; you can get into the class much earlier (after only five levels if you use the Practiced Spellcaster feat), the stats are strictly superior (although you do lose out on some useful skills), and the ability to teleport and make a full attack in the same round is nice.

But if you want to go straight caster, consider Rainbow Servant from Complete Divine; the table is incorrect so you get full spell progression (if your DM rules otherwise, PS makes up for it), and you get to add all the cleric spells to your class list, along with getting domain powers... As a sorcerer, access to Miracle is amazing; as a wizard, your spellbook is unbelievable.
