Yeah, I am looking for a class or PrC that improves critical ranges. I am planing on building a scythe wielder, so that points to something other than improved crit as it only grants an increase of one.

On a side note, is there an exotic version of a scythe that grants 19-20/x4? I don't believe there is.

In the end I am trying to make a character that can actually use great cleave, on a regular basis.

I don't think their is a Prc that improves critical threats anymore (Their was one in 3.0).
I can point you to the direction of the exotic weapon the Talenta Serash from ECS.
It's basically a scythe with improved threat range and reach.

IIRC it was the weapon master from Sword and fist and Oriental adventures

there was also the disciple of dispater from the book of vile darkness.

If you're using 3.0, there are builds on CharOp that can get 2-20/x7 crits, but in 3.5 most crit range or multiplier increases are gone.

You'll note that any class that improves threat range having it stack with Imp Crit is 3.0. Also, there is no weapon with a threat range of 19-20 or greater having a crit multiplier or x3 or greater, without being 3rd party (and overpowered). The Psychic Weapon Master also has the improved threat range thing. It's in the Mind's Eye (online).

Not completely true. kristoss mentioned a Talenta weapon with 19-20/x4 and reach. On the overpowered aspect, however, I agree.

The Talenta weapon has been issued errata.

What kalstrand said. This was covered in a different thread, and discussed heavily. There were also other weapons brought into the discussion, all of them were Errata'd to follow the crit rules I stated earlier.

Is BOVD 3.0 I always thought it was 3.5. Disciple of Dispater is a prc in that book that allows for increased threat ranges that stack with Improved Crit but not keen. And, yes it is a overpowered prc.
dman11235

I did not know . thanks for clearing that up one of my players (told me it was 3.5 ) will now have to change his character. I only allow 3.5 (absolutely no 3.0) in my campaign. Thats what I get for believing him I guess. thanks
dman11235

02-16-08, 04:34 PM
Check for the publish date. BoVD also includes some 3.0 only skills like Pick Pocket and Intuit Direction (which are both now part of Sleight of Hand and Survival respectively), and 3.0 monster characteristics like face.

I would strongly concider updating the BoVD for use in 3.5 if I were you if you allow the BoED (which is 3.5). If you don't allow BoED, then don't bother.
JaronK

BoVD is 3.0, but it was written just before the switchover to 3.5, and I believe it has updates to bring it to 3.5, so your player should be okay!

That said Disciple of Dispater is in there, and it gives huge bonuses to critical hits.

There is no 19-20/X3 or similar weapon, as they've all been errated... only one side of the slash is supposed to be better than 20/X2.

The Errata is on the main site, in the Eberron Campaign Setting errata. It sucks so much that they hit it with that, but the weapon is essentially a two-handed Bastard Sword with reach and a trip bonus. One of the few EWPs that is actually worth something. Now, if it still had the crit threat of x4, it would be the most powerful weapon for its cost, arguably.

OK, well I KNOW that there is no weapon that is 19-20/x4. That is why I wanted a class feature. If the class feature improves it at least by 2, then it is better than improved crit.

There is only one thing in the game that does that to a weapon that I am aware of, and that is the capstone ability of the Tiger Claw legacy weapon.

Which one would that be? The Talentia... whatever it's called? Errataed. The Minotaur Great-whatsit? Typo.

There aren't any legal such weapons, except possibly that legacy weapon.

And Disciple of Dispater is the class for crazed crit monkeys, usually combined with Blood in the Water and a weapon with Enfeebling, for kicks.

Well, Katori Resin hasn't been Errataed yet, so a Katori Resin Jovar will do the nasty tricks.

Are they Outsiders? I forget. If so, you could planar bind them.

The other issue is that such weapons break down if not maintained by a Katori.

Care to share it with us?

Planar Binding, summoning Pazuzu, Wishing for one, Shadow Miracle to make a "fake" permanent one. Plenty of options.

Kaotri weapons are found here. (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/re/20031014a)

As to them decaying, Quintessence takes care of that problem.

But it hasn't been updated, and is still 3.5 compatible. Therefore, legal.
dman11235

02-17-08, 04:27 PM
That doesn't make it legal, it just means it wasn't updated. If you can't find an update for it, then it is likely not worth updating, or they thought it wouldn't fit in 3.5 theme wise. Also, most WotC website additions weren't updated, the Mind's Eye is an example of that.

Actually, FF has been issued Errata, and anything compatible with 3E is 3.5 compatible, according to WotC.
dman11235

FF might have been issued an update, but was the web enhancement issued one? I'm pretty sure it wasn't. They don't usually update those. Compatable, yes. A good idea to use un-updated? Probably not.

LordTarmos: technically, all 3.0 material is 3.5 compatible as long as you convert the skill and feat names. The idea iirc is that WotC only updates what needs updating. Apart from that, however, the Weapon Master also appears in Oriental Adventures, which was updated in Dragon 318. That the PrC does not appear in the list of changes imo means that it is fully 3.5 compatible after you rename the feats and such.

And, of course, there is the Mind's Eye Psychic Weapon Master (3.5 version is here (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/psm/20040827d)), which I can heartily recommend to anyone. 8 PW levels with 2 levels of another class - I'd probably go swordsge for the wfocus/wisdom synergy or fighter for the feats - can imo be a good entrance build.

The Exotic Weapon Master is the update for the old Weapon Master.

I've heard that, saw it written down, and still think it's complete BS. I value the WotC products and the designers' opinion, but in this case they make less than no sense. It's like being told the DMG 3.5 Archmage is an update of the old Pale Master - and even that would have more logic behind it.

As far as I'm concerned, the EWM is an update of the 3.0 EWM, and even there it leaves something to be desired.
JaronK

02-18-08, 01:14 AM
Well, remember that they pretty much did away with critical hit improving classes in 3.5, so it makes sense that any critical hit class from 3.0 would be updated into something VERY different.

JaronK
The_Shaman

02-18-08, 03:48 PM

JaronK

02-18-08, 04:04 PM
They've said that the Weapon Master was updated with the Exotic Weapon Master, and is thus no longer legal, if that's what you mean.

If you mean the other bit (about critical improvements mostly going away in 3.5) then I don't believe so, it's just an obvious pattern along with skill point bonuses going down across the board.

I meant the critical improvements. While it's true that some of the PrCs that had them lost them or were simply not updated, some forms do exist - a feat in the Draconomicon, that resin material thing, the Psychic WM, the To9S legacy kukri... All in all, I wouldn't go as far as to say it's a conscious move of WotC to bad all such options. It's supposed to be something special, but the WMaster was supposed to be quite special to begin with.
