Class Level? [Archive] - Wizards Community

03-03-05, 01:21 PM Excuse me hehe but I'm new with D&D and started to learn it to become a DM! So now that I have Read almost everything aboute how to make a charater i wanted to start making one! but i dont really understand how the characters gain Class level!??? I understand the normal Character levleing stuff but not Class levleing... plz help me someone!? :confused: :weep:

03-03-05, 01:26 PM i'm not entirely sure what you mean, sueco.

you gain enough experience, and you gain a level. what you want to put that level into is generally your choice (some restrictions apply sometimes).

maybe you're confused by character level vs class level? if that's the case, it's because of the ability to multiclass into other core classes and prestige classes.

i.e. say you have a rogue 8/wizard 5. in that case, you have a level 13 character. but for rogue abilities, you follow the progression table up to level 8, likewise for the wizard up to 5.

is this what you're referring to?

then, there's the even more confusing concept of effective character level (ECL) and level adjustment. i still have trouble with that sometimes, myself, so if that's what you're referring to, someone else will provide better detail than m.e

03-03-05, 01:29 PM Any time your character gains enough experience to "gain a level," such as when a 1st level character gains 1000 xp, that character can choose which class s/he can gain next. Example: if you have a 1st level rogue, you can choose your next level as a rogue, a fighter, a ranger, etc.

Your "character level" is the sum of all of the levels in the classes you've taken. Your "class level" is the number of levels you've taken in a given class. Example: a 4th level rogue's character level is 4, and his class level is also 4. A 2nd level rogue/2nd level fighter's character level is also 4, but his class level is 2r/2f.

Any more questions, or would you like even more clarification?

03-03-05, 01:32 PM hehe ok i think I missunderstood the book from the beginning... (I'm from sweden so sometimes it can be hard to understand what the book means ^^) I thought that i gained different XP for the character level and for the class level but i was wrong :P
