Class that is to Illusion what Warmage is to Evocation [Archive] - Wizards Community

We've got Warmage as a class that only casts Evocations and we've got Beguiler as a class that only casts Enchantments. Has there been any book or issue of a magazine like Dragon that has created something like this only for Illusion spells?

Please tell me if it is a base class only. I'm not interested in prestige classes at this point.

Thanks!

Ummm, the Beguiler casts illusions and enchantments, with maybe a little more emphasis on illusion...

Look at the beguiler's list (the FULL list, page 11). Although the name implies enchantment, you'll find roughly equal proportions of enchantment and illusion there (the two go hand in hand), with a small splash of transmutation as well. It favors illusion more as it goes up in level.

It's better than the Warmage since Evocation's essentially useless.

Ahah! That just goes to show that I don't have the PHB2 and just went by what I've been told.

That aside, has there ever been anything created for just illusions, like how the Warmage is to Evocations.

Well no, but then why would you want such a one-trick pony? Technically, even the warmage is not purely evocation; quite a few of his attack spells are drawn from the conjuration school, and disintegrate is transmutation. The ultra-specialist caster classes focus more on a specific party role or character archetype, than they do on an actual school per se.

If you really want one school and nothing but one school, the best way to go is a wizard specialist, using all the alternate features presented in Unearthed Arcana (specialist variants), the Player's Handbook II (immediate magic) and Complete Mage (focused specialist and Master Specialist).

The beguiler is really a solid class though, and probably stronger than the other ultra-specialists (warmage, healer, maybe even dread necromancer) because it has the versatility of two schools, not to mention Int-based spellcasting and lots of skill points. You need not look any further for most illusionist concepts than the beguiler, and illusion and enchantment can complement each other quite well.

My wife is creating a ninja and wants to multi-class as an illusionist as that will help her as a ninja and would be a cover for her character, who is pretending to be an entertainer. However, Illusionist doesn't really seem like a good match since she's only taking a couple levels. We've also talked about her multi-classing as a sorcerer and just taking illusion spells for her spells known but we were hoping that there'd be some class that might help her maximize her illusion powers as she's only taking a few levels.

The other thing is that enchantment is one of the schools that she wants to give up if she's a specialist wizard because she doesn't want enchantment spells, which is why the Beguiler doesn't sound like an incredibly good fit.

Still, thanks for the help.

You can entertain people just fine with sleight of hand and tumble.

Plus enchantment makes for great hypnotist displays.

Just because the beguiler has access to enchantment spells, doesn't mean you have to actually use them. It doesn't change the fact that it has access to most illusion spells.

However, if she really wants to sacrifice enchantment in favor of illusion (which seems odd IMPO since they're complementary and closely related schools), and she's multiclassing with ninja, the following changes should be roughly balanced:
• Remove most/all enchantment spells from the beguiler list.
• Grant advanced learning (illusion) at every odd-numbered level (1st, 3rd, 5th, etc.) instead of just every other odd-numbered level (3rd, 7th, 11th, etc.).
• Your/her choice of either increasing the BAB from poor to medium, or the Reflex save from poor to good.

Um, gnome illusionist sub 1, master spec, shadowcraft mage, shadowcrafter with chains of disbelief and that other illusion variant. It'll pwn the warmage's face. It'll even do so at his own game. That's the really funny part.
