| Edymnion05-24-05, 06:08 PM | Okay, don't really have a name for this guy, because I'm trying to work him up in a hurry to be something suitable for a character to play in an upcoming game (this Sunday). So, you'll have to forgive me if I do this in shorthand instead of coding up the entire table. BAB: Medium (as Monk) Saves: Reflex Good Skillpoints: 4+int HD: d10 Unarmed Damage: As monk, but delay getting 1d8 damage by one level. Meaning it does 1d6 for 4 levels instead of only 3, and they don't get to 2d10. Armor Profs: Light No AC bonus I'm thinking dropping Flurry, and possibly giving him a bonus on unarmed damage equal to 1/2 character level (meaning at lvl 10, he'd be getting a straight up +5 to all damage rolls, +10 at lvl 20) Not sure where to take it from there though. |
| Rechan05-24-05, 06:31 PM | Look at rangers and monks. Both have d8s and 4+int skills. Rangers have fighter BAB progression, Two good saves, light armor, special combat techniques, spells and favored enemy. Monks have awesome saves, evasion, ki strike to magic their fists, and make up for their lack of toe-to-toe fighting with special abilites. This class should be like the ranger (power wise) with a monk feel. While the class gets better HD, it suffers from monk BAB. Proficient with armor, 4+Int skill set. Possibly give it the ranger's Saves. I suggest having some feats like a monk. Maybe not snatch arrow, but grappling/disarming/trip seem appropriate for a bruiser. Not in the flashy leg-sweep but more in the "I grab you by the shirt and throw you down". Possible additions to the bonus feat list: Improved Bull Rush, Eagle's Claw (Though the reqs are steep so maybe not), maybe at a higher level Knockback? He needs a little more in the special ability department. Three chances to access bonus feats (a choice between one or the other) is weaker than the fighter ability, so something is needed to offset one good save and "Okay" BAB. Definitely needs something to handle DR. While Ki-strike is too 'mystical chi', something should be offered since the class focuses on unarmed fighting. Possibly Uncanny dodge. I want to say Evasion but I'm having trouble explaining why, but the image of this unarmed tank standing unhurt, smoke and flame whipping around him as the fireball dissipates is just cool. Also, something in higher levels. I want to say "Immunity to fear affects" But aside from being tough I don't see it. |
| Kintara05-24-05, 06:40 PM | Hmm, try doing a build with a regular Fighter, and see how well he can fight by level 20. A Two Weapon Fighting Fighter with Greater Weapon Specialization would have a lot of attacks, and not do such a bad amount of damage. The trouble with a build like that is that Monks get ways to penetrate DR. A brawling Fighter needs to use magic gauntlets or receive similar abilities to the Monk if he wants to have a chance to be able to keep up. |
| Edymnion05-24-05, 07:02 PM | Level 20 isn't going happen anytime soon. This is for an Eberron game (low level), starting at lvl 1 or 2. Thats why I'm trying to work out a class that can be used, not a character build that won't work until lvl 15 or something. |

Your class would seem to have similar issues to one like that. You'll probably want to keep the Monk's DR bypassing abilities, unless your intention is to encourage the use of brawling implements. What is your intention with the class, to make a non-Monk unarmed martial artist? |

| Edymnion05-24-05, 11:53 PM | Check Orc brawler he is incridibly powerfulYou know, that doesn't exactly make me want to look at it. I want balanced and useful, not "incridibly powerful". *goes to look at it* Actually, thats pretty good. I don't think I want the fast movement in there though, but the rest of it is pretty good. |

I see one problem with it: The BAB. Monk BAB is average, and the flurry BAB is your BAB -2. The Brawler is Fighter BAB, and your BAB -1. That's a tad strong, even though it does offset the lower damage. I'd say drop the speed, make the skills to 4+, add in Sense Motive, a little thief skills (MS, hide maybe), give them simple weapon proficency and call it a day. |
| Edymnion05-25-05, 12:34 AM | That sounds like a winner to me. Drop Fast Movement, give it things like Sense Motive, Bluff, etc, and all simple weapons. Call it a Back Alley Brawler, equally likely to box your brains out as they are to pull a lead pipe (read: improvised light mace) and bash 'em out. |
