The mage is a harry potter-based spellcastiong class. It has been attempted before, and now I have tried it. It's a play-tested class, and I think it is much more fun than other spellcasting classes.

Casting ability: CHA
Armor & weapon proficiencies: Like sorcerer
Skills (4+ INT mod): Bluff [Ch], Concentration [Co], Craft , Diplomacy [Ch], Handle Animal [Ch], Knowledge(arcana) [I], Profession [W], Sleight of Hand [D] Spellcraft [I].
HD: d4.

The mage can cast every spell he knows (all of the mage basic spell list) with no limit. The mage's spells have only verbel and somatic components. A sorcerer can cast spells without a verbel component, at a 20% faliure. Casting a spell without a wand causes a 50% faliure, which is cumalative with the 20% silent spell (if any) but not with Arcane Spell Faliure caused from armor (if any) which is tested before the wand/verbel spell faliure. A mage cannot cast a spell without a somatic component. Every spell the mage casts reguires a ranged touch attack, in addition to whatever the spell description may say.

Wand Powers: The mage's wand is capable of several powers, wether it's a stick or a masterpiece. The powers are: Prestidigitation, Light and Mage Hand at will. In addition to that, the mage is capable of summoning his wand (as though casting [I]Accio) without a wand at no penalty.

Immediate Spell: From second level and every even-numbered level from then on (4,6,8,10...) the mage can cast a spell immediatly (as though using a readied action. The mage can have 1 immediate spell charged in his wand in any given time (2 on 4th, 3 on 6th...). Charging each spell takes 5 minutes. At 20th level, the mage can use this ability with no limit.

Spell: From 7th level and evey odd-numbered level afterwards (9,11,13...)the mage learns a spell from the advanced spell list (I didn't write that yet, help is welcome).

Abbreviations:
CL: Caster Level.
AR: Attack Roll.
F: Fortitude.
R: Reflex.
W: Will.
Ch: Charisma.
mod: Modifier.
NL: Non-Lethal.

(The spells are taken from http://www.mugglenet.com/info/other/spells.shtml).

The mage's wand is about 12 inches long wodden rod. It could be in any shape, as long as it's wood. A mage may only have 1 wand at a time, and making a wand yours requires 10 minutes. A mage may have as many extra wands as he pleases, but only one of them actually works. A wand could be a masterwork (adding 300gp to the price, which is usually below 10gp), which gives it a +1 bonus to ranged touch attacks. A wand may also be embedded with smoe magical item, which costs roughly 500gp. The magical component adds another +1 to the ranged touch attaks and +1 to the DC for CL-based saving throws. You can bu a stronger magical item to be embedded, for 1000gp, which will add +2 to ranged touch attacks and +2 to CL-based saving throws DC. Every +1 is another 500 gp.
You could use Weapon Focus on a wand, and any specific spell. Damage-bearing spells could be subjected to Weapon Speciliazation (the same rules for fighter, only mage).

Opinions?

Interesting. My only quip so far, not having compared it with other stuff yet is the name. People need to come up with more inventive names. If another person makes a class simply called "Mage", my head is going to explode.

Wizard and Sorcerer were taken, so... Mage is pretty much all that is left. If that's your problem, feel free to come up with another name. :)

But Academy Warmage sounds LAME!!!!!!!
I think Mage is the only remaining name for spellcasting classes...

A lot of people say that it's overpowered. Do you think so?

Thats WANDmage.

The concept seems just fine, though the execution of the spell list is a little overpowered. Compare the spells to the appropriate existing spell (Accio to Mage Hand/Telekinesis, Colloportus to Arcane Lock, Engorgio to Enlarge Person) and adjust power down according to the infinite spells.

With Engorgio in particular, you have the issue that Enlarge Person is rounds/level while this is mins/level.

I would put level prerequisites on certain powers, since some of them simply don't scale by level effectively.

A good class to compare with is the Warlock from Complete Arcane.

I would leave the magical component bit out of the Wand's deescription.

Consider a 10th level character with 15K to blow. That's a +30 to his ranged touch attacks and CL saving throws.

Perhaps take that part to the Items and Equipment boards, they can help you square that part off maybe.

All over, it doesn't seem balanced, but I can't decide if its too powerful or too weak. (Infinite spells VS increaed fail rate, and spell list differences)

Also, I agree about the name.
Hmm... What about, "Wand Wizard"? This is a good start, I think.

I'm not sure I understand the whole spell thing. I see one spell that does 5d6 damage, now is this scaling up to a maximum of 5d6 or just buttstock 5d6 at will? And alot of the spells seem pretty worthless. It looks pretty random to me, with only a few uselful spells that are game breaking . I do see a few spells, the one the looks like ottos irresistable dance looks pretty broken, along with the dispel magic.

For a class like this theres got to be alot more detail to it. Right now you can't tell what half the spells actually do. This class just seems to be everywhere at once, with way to many options at will and some seriously broken abilities.

As is it needs a complete overhaul. Look at the truenamer and warlock and start from there.
