I have been pititioning a Spartan class for a while now.
300 might be my chance to jump on the wave to get some attention that Wizards auta make a Spartan class.

My ideas are based on Historical accuracy.
I feel historical accuracy in this class will carry it further and give it longevity. Also this could be used as a blank slate to pump it up to comic book hero style, or like the movie 300.

I thought that a Spartan should be played at the age of 7.
The character could chose a class (monk,Barb,Fighter, cleric ect)
And then when he/she is older and ready it can Prc to Spartan.
possibly.

Spartan Class

Hit Dice: d10*

A Spartan gains Damage Reduction 1/level
(Unless flanked. DR does not count on flanks)*

Hoplon Feat. (New Feat) To use a Hoplon it requires a feat.
-Spartans get this feat for free, at level 1.
-Spartans Shield bash without losing the AC bonus.
-Spartans gain +4 AC vs arrows with Hoplons.

Glory Aura. When a Spartan dies, all his comrades gain 1 damage reduction and/or +1 dmg/attack for the duration of that battle. (only works if the Spartan died with Hoplon)

Favor of the Gods- A permanent +1 to will(or fort) to the lawful defender who is standing in the spot where the Spartan has died. This goes away if the Spartan is resurected *

A Spartans Comrade gains +1 AC (only works if the Spartan carries his hoplon Shield)

If A Spartans Comrade(any class) has a shield, The Spartan can use this shield as cover in battle. The Spartan gains +1 AC.

Can use a long Spear with only one hand. Throwing allowed.

Equipment.

Hoplon Shield

+3 AC bonus. 3 feet diameter. 20 lbs. Requires specific proficiency to use and 18 str.

Made of metal, wood and leather. (Spells warp wood will not effect shield. Heat metal will not cause injury)

You may use your shield hand to carry other items, however you lose the AC bonus while doing this.

Shield Bash: 1d4 dmg (x2 crit) loses AC bonus while attacking

For Spartans +3 AC bonus. +4 AC bonus vs arrows. weight does not add to encumburance. 3 feet diameter.

Shield Bash - 1d4 dmg (x2 crit) does not lose AC bonus while attacking. Only +3 AC vs arrows while attacking.

Spartans are not proficient in Bows. And is discraceful to use them. A Spartan Class does not gain xp from use in Bows.

Hoplon Feat.

To use a Hoplon shield a feat is required. *18 str is still required.
Spartan class get this feat for free.
Spartan class give more bonus with this shield.
*All shield proficiencies must be taken seperately or specifically to use with a Hoplon.

Notes:
The Charisma of Spartans were more on an asthetic level. They were pretty.
Helen of Troy (the most beautifull woman in the world) was originally Helen of Sparta.
Intelligence and Wisdom should be the lowest attributes.
Spartans were not magnificent War tacticians. They were just strong.
Spartans come from Hercules/Herakles.
Women of sparta were beatiful, fit and strong. Called Thigh Flashers.
Athenians developed seige weapons. And built walls.
The Spartans were the walls of Sparta, and the tips of their spears were the borders.

+ = I believe should be mandatory
* = I believe is optional, needs work
Everything is open for PEACH. please.

If anyone thinks this is out balanced so far let me know.

As badass as the spartans in 300 are, they don't have their own class. I see them as level 5 or 6 fighters (Leonidas is probably 8). Each of them are paragon humans, and have Phalanx Fighting, Shield Specialization, Shield Ward, Two-Weapon Fighting, Oversized Two-Weapon Fighting, Improved Shield Bash, and some other feats (like something to wield spears with one hand).

Monkey Grip ^_^

Once upon a time I was toying with the idea of a Fighter/Warblade that utalized something like this, but ended up scraping it for a weapon collector style character I had been cooking up for a while. Although with my character's current build I could potentially pull it off, if I dip to fighter to get Tower Shields.

Im not trying to imitate the movie.
Im trying to emulate a class to depict accurate historic Spartanism.

Is Phalanx fighting a feat somewhere?

If a Spartan class is historically accurate, it can easily be tweeked to resemble any heroic mode, including the movie 300.

The only way I think anyone is going to make a great Spartan class is to focus in ally, and flanking bonuses. A spartan is no good on it's own. This raises problems for those who want to go into a normal campaign, but I think if you became determined enough to coerce another player in your campaign into taking the same class, or a complimenting class, you could have alot of fun.
