| Catalyst02-07-04, 12:32 AM | So here is my problem, and i'd GREATLY appreciate input for my charactor.... We are playing 3.5. My original 'hope' for my character was a slight 'matrix' feel, in that she would be able to kick ass! but I couldn't find antyhing that i liked to match with that thought, as I dont want to play a lawfull charactor (which meant no monk, and almost no classes in the OA handbook), so i searched. the ranger, i like the two weapon fighting, and the fav enemies. and in 3.5, she is much stealthier...though i still was dissatsified that tumble wasn't a class skill (which i still can't quite make fit..even taking comsopotian:tumble...i jsut dont have hte feats available to me!) So i contiued to look...I found Shadow Scout (SwS) in the OAhandbook, Stalker of Karash(SoK) in Exhalted deeds, and also Lion of Talsid (LoT)...which SwS i liked the Fast movment and evasion, SoK i liked the scent of evil and track evil(lvl5), Lot I liked Lions courage and Scent. So I've got this nature esqu creature, who's got some fav'enemies ((oo SoK has favored enemy evil..ALL evil...add the feat Nemesis from Exhalted Deeds, mmm yummy), seom fighting ablities, and some catlike disoptions...so nothing 'trinity' like about her perse, but good...but i sitll wasnt' satisfied as i tried to get them to mesh. I thought making her affinity with cats more..prevalant by taking animal lord..cat lord..but am snagging on the fact that there are NO felines in the animal companion options for my level. and my dm wants me to get some ruling of the net to figure out if I can take a regular ole cat, so i'm snagged. I've also thougth of taking a couple lvls of fighter and or Sword of Ritcheous to get some bonus feats. So all this said, i'm sure you see, i'm lost. I'm wanting a ranger..shes twilight elf(serface drow), and her weapons, i think, will be wakazashi (or however it's spelled), and a bastard sword or katana. I've pumped skill points into jump, hide, move silently, listen, and spot...what should I do? how would you convert Animal Lord to 3.5? any ideas for animal companions? or what about the 'ultimate ranger' as listed here for a base class if my dm will allow it? can you see the level of my lostness? please? any and all thoughts are welcome!! |
| Nick Soapdish02-09-04, 01:54 AM | I'm afraid that I'm a bit lost also as I don't have any of the splatbooks you mentioned. But if you're eventually going to be going back and taking a few more levels of ranger, you could try and take a juvenile tiger (or cougar or whatever) as your animal companion and have it grow to maturity as you get more ranger levels (and it gets more abilities). |
| q'afuu02-09-04, 02:36 AM | Originally posted by Catalyst can you see the level of my lostness? After reading your post, my level probably equals yours. Exactly what do you want? I see references to dextrous combat and wire-fu acrobatics and then you jump to tracker stuff and FEs, followed by another jump to animal affinity abilities, and to top it of you're looking for some extra feats. In short, you want a lot, not to say too much. Why don't you prioritize a bit and decide on a core concept. You can still try for some of the other stuff (albeit probably a bit more low-key) as extras. If you spread yourself out like your post suggest, you'll need 20 or more levels to do it and by the time yo get there, characters with a more tight concept will be getting much better abilities than you will. That's ok if you can live with it, but most people I know aren't too happy if all of their character abilities are mediocre for their level. As an aside, what about being Lawful is it you don't like? Alignments, especially one the chaos-law axis, are pretty flexible really. It's only if you want that exalted stuff that you're really starting to limit yourself. |
| Kage Wellby02-09-04, 06:51 AM | You're wanting too much. If you want a Ranger with Tumble, then take the feat or work with your DM on a trade (Survival would be a good trade). Honestly, they gave the Ranger so many special abilities in 3.5 that I don't know how you could feel like you didn't have the feat to spare. Keep in mind, there's only so much a character can do before it becomes too powerful, and that is the true province of the munchkin. |

In short, you want a lot, not to say too much. You bring up a valid point. I was thinking about that a couple of days ago. This charactor is ALL over the place!! I love the dextrous combat and wire-fu acrobatics, as it were, the best. I chose ranger because of roleplay, and two weapon fighting. it jsut worked for her history and growing up. The animal affinity really came because I wanted the scent ability for her, realy for roleplay value more then usefullness. though i didn't want the dm to give me that ''your making things up again'' look!!! ::grins sheepishly:: what?! i try to be creative!! She's a nature loving, evil hating, kick (evil)drow butt((she worships elistree)),lover of cats and cooking...hmm...no she doestn' COOK the cats!!three levels of ranger and an open road before me...((with no idea where to go!!)) oh and she's NG. As an aside, what about being Lawful is it you don't like? Alignments, especially one the chaos-law axis, are pretty flexible really. It's only if you want that exalted stuff that you're really starting to limit yourself. Lawfull just seems to exude so much...well...like I can't go anywhere with the charactor. I suppose thats very short sided of me. my first charactore was chaotic neutral which was fun...'ALL about me!!", and this charactor (being only my second, yes I must admit!) is ng. Which is still fun and sassy, even if i must make sure to do the 'right' thing and help those in need. OHH..and to another post..i like the idea of a juvinale couger or tiger that grows with me..but my dm want facts and figures...so does anyone know how WoC figured out their 'list' of animal companions? |
| MisterGuignol02-12-04, 07:39 AM | three levels of ranger and an open road before me...((with no idea where to go!!)) [/B] If you're only three levels into ranger, I would suggest keeping it simple by balancing these levels with levels in rogue. Here's a few reasons why: rogue will give you access to Tumble as a class skill, which you said you wanted. Weapon Finese + free TWF from the levels in ranger + Sneak Attack from the rogue = a nice cinematic combat style that would fit with your character concept. (I would, however, go for two light swords instead of the wakizashi/katana combo...less feat intensive and less penalties to hit.) Throw Improved Critical and Weapon Focus on top of this and you're in business. |
| Catalyst02-12-04, 08:09 PM | Originally posted by MisterGuignol I would suggest keeping it simple by balancing these levels with levels in rogue. that is a great thought, whcih i kinda thought of as well...just wasn't sure how it would work together...my dm just bought a new book as well with new prestige classes he thought i'd like...blade dancer..?? i think it's in the OA thou isn't it? I thank everyone for their input. good ideas thus far, thanks bunches..keep 'em coming if you see any fatal flaws. btw..again..anyone know about the animal compainions?????? |
| honeynuggets02-13-04, 07:45 AM | I had the same thought. I wanted a Ranger who could counter the slightly cheesy Spiked Chain + Improved Trip tactic which means Tumble. Since it's the only more or less equal Counter tactic that costs about the same in Skills/Feats as the Trip Tactic. The best solution I found was to take my first level in Rogue then go to Ranger until the DM started throwing foes who could cast Fireball, at which point I took 2nd level Rogue for Evasion since it was still a long way to Ranger Evasion. I don't know if I will need more Rogue levels later on but the sneak attack is very nice since the Ranger is a high DEX character. There are some steep penalties for taking this route to be able to counter AOOs though. 1. The Rogue has some overlapping traits with the Ranger like Evasion which make it redundant. 2. You can't multiclass into other useful classes like Cleric (for the spell list which you can use with scrolls fairly easily) without taking an exp penalty. 3. The only Elf with Ranger as a favored class is the Wood Elf who doesn't have a DEX bonus! BS |
| Druid Roxors02-13-04, 01:38 PM | I have a Ranger/assasin and I just love it. It can cast Cure spells, Mist, Invisibility AND Improved invisibility (from wands). It has a flanking partner (ape) and uses two weapon fighting with a pair of elemental rapiers. It is so fun to use, It can travel at great speeds with her Bottle of smoke (MOTW), tumble, Teleport (treestride wand), Sneak, Poison Weapons and so much more. I really enjoy this character, even if its an NPC thats trying to kill my PCs, LOL. |

BS 1) If you get Evasion as a class skill from a new level and already have it from levels in another class, you get Improved Evasion instead. That's not redundant, that's a major benefit. 2) So keep your non-favoured class levels balanced, or suck up the XP penalty. 3) See 2. |

BS To be honest, I don't think multi-classing into three classes (ranger/rogue/cleric) is a good idea in the first place. You usually end-up over-extending your character, unless one of those classes is a PrC that works well with what you've already got. If you are planning on playing the character in a long-haul campaign, you'll be far behind the power curve of the other characters at the high levels. Another thing, why would anyone multi-class a cleric, except for maybe a slight dip into fighter for a more combat-oriented character? The cleric is so good that you're almost always better off just going for straight levels. I'm not sure at all about wood elves (are they in the Realms or something?) but I would just keep the levels of a multi-class character pretty close so you don't have to worry about the favored class/XP penalty. |

That's not redundant, that's a major benefit. Wow. That's a great tip I didn't know about. Can you tell me where that rule is so I can back it up? 2) So keep your non-favoured class levels balanced This is another thing I didn't know about. hehe thanks. My character is a Wood Elf Ranger in a low power campaign. I was considering taking a level in cleric for: 1. Same hp 2. Gain 3 orisons, 1 1st level spell, 1 domain spell 3. 2 Domains, War (weapon focus feat-longbow), 4. Different Save bonuses 5. But mostly to gain the Cleric Spell list which I could cast from scrolls with a pretty easy Caster Level check. |
| honeynuggets02-13-04, 03:14 PM | Found the rule about gaining the Improved version of the class skill....very sweet. |
| q'afuu02-13-04, 03:50 PM | Originally posted by honeynuggets 3. 2 Domains, War (weapon focus feat-longbow), Which deity has War in his/her portfolio and the longbow as favoured weapon? |
| honeynuggets02-13-04, 05:23 PM | I was going to use Phaulkon (living greyhawk dieties download) But I think Ehlonna gives the longbow too. |
| DrakaraGM02-13-04, 06:19 PM | Catalyst -- Since you have O.A., you might also look at the Blade Dancer prestige class (edit: which I just now realize you had mentioned earlier...), which gives a hefty bonus to acrobatics (Balance, Jump and Tumble) over its levels -- in the 3.0 version at least they get up to a +30 with those skills. But I forget what the prerequisites and other benefits are... And I don't know what changes, if any, will be made for 3.5 (I believe an upcoming Dragonm magizine article may address 3.5 O.A.) I do know that in the O.A. web errata, they do have a couple of corrections -- they change the alignment to any non-chaotic (so wouldn't have to be lawful, just couldn't be chaotic), and add a little more to the enchanted blade III description. Anyways, if you're gonna be dual-wielding as a ranger, that could work with blade dancer as well. Just an idea... |
| Baalzamon02-13-04, 06:51 PM | Found the rule about gaining the Improved version of the class skill....very sweet. great that you found it, but for thos eof us that didnt, would you mind mentioning WHERE!!!??? |
| honeynuggets02-13-04, 11:11 PM | p.59 PHB 3.5 |
| Baalzamon02-14-04, 01:57 AM | evasion is not specifically mentioned, though uncanny dodge is. therefore evasion does not stack from 2 classes. |
| q'afuu02-14-04, 02:49 AM | Hmm. That's correct. I wonder where I found that then - I know it doesn't apply in 3.0, I thought it was one of the revision changes. I'll do some looking around. |
| Lord Schpungus02-14-04, 12:51 PM | You got it from Complete Warrior. In the Master Thrower PrC, it states that you get improved evasion if you already have evasion. I would venture to guess that that only works for that specific class. |

BS If you want to Multi-class without 'doubling up' but with maximum skill and ability spread try Ranger/Bard. Between the two you have access to nearly all skills as class skills, ranger feats and Bardic music (buffs) and Bardic Knowledge (chance to know something about anything), as well as gaining magic earlier. |
| honeynuggets02-14-04, 11:06 PM | There is another PrC in Complete Warrior (I think) that gives Zen Archery. It says if you already have Zen archery then instead you can just Stack Wis and Dex bonuses for ranged attacks. I thought they were just using the PHB rule of stacking special abilities, but now at least one person thinks that this stacking is not a general rule at all....hmmm. |

I thought I'd read the web errata, but i tottaly skipped that one!! I had no idea! I had basically set the book aside because I thought, nearly, all the prestige classes required one ot be lawfull, and as previously stated, my charactor isn't!! ROCK ON! thank you...oh and btw, my dm has brought up perhaps doing the "dirvish". i've completly forgottne what book it's in, a newer one i know that. But dirvish is pretty cool. but blade dancer too!! ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh my puny little brain is overloading with excitment! must...stop..must...::kerplunk:: ::winks:: thanks again all for the WONDERFULL imput! you all are simply great! |
