Unlike the basic classes, characters must meet Requirements before they can take their first level of a prestige class. The rules for level advancement apply to this system, meaning the first step of advancement is always choosing a class. If a character does not meet the Requirements for a prestige class before that first step, that character cannot take the first level of that prestige class. Taking a prestige class does not incur the experience point penalties normally associated with multiclassing. You can find it yourself here. (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/prestigeClasses/prestigeClasses.htm) In addition, you can check the FAQ, which has this same info. |

However, there is also a thread that practically 99% of the people eschew the xp penalty even for base class anyway. |

| LSMFT11-05-07, 11:49 AM | It mentions the penalties in several places. |

It's arguably an unneeded concept. It is "mentioned (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/races.htm#favoredClass)" in several places. However, it is not fully explained. It is not explained because it is not OGL material. MOST of the PHB, DMG, etc are in the SRD. Experience points, however, are not. Just because something is not in the SRD, does not mean that it was left out because it shouldn't be in the game at all. That being said, I also agree, multiclass penalties are stupid and should be house-ruled out. |
