| Elnsoxo06-03-06, 12:22 AM | Hey all, I noticed that there are almost no classes (only two I know of) based around creation and manipulation of magic items. So here's (http://elnsoxo.com:8080/class1.txt) my attempt to fix that. It's nowhere near finished/playable; I just need some help/opinions on how I should handle the crafting of magic items. class abilities: -at level 4, gain Craft Magic Arms and Armor regardless of prerequisites. -Gain favor from deity: when crafting magic weapons/armor, add +5 to spells per day and caster level is equal to twice the class level. So wizard 5/ class 5 would be a 15th level caster when making magic weapons. Notes: -hit die: d8; skills 6 + Int -This is essentially a paladin with a different spell list -Ignore number of 0th level spells per day. Added it by mistake and was too lazy to fix it :P -Ignore special abilities. I have a vague idea of what I'll put, but I need to ensure that his magic capabilities are not overpowering first. -I only plan to have 10 levels of the class -No racial requirements. Not chaotic evil requirement. -Yes I realize this is similar to Battlesmith from Races of Stone. I had the idea, then my DM showed me the class when I talked to him about it. I'm looking for something not as combat-oriented and less prestige-y. -I need to think of a name for the class! Many thanks in advance for any critique! |
| TheSubtlePenguin06-03-06, 12:24 AM | Artificer from the Ebberon campagin setting. |
| Elnsoxo06-03-06, 12:31 AM | Aye, one of the two I know of. However I nor any of the people in my party have the book so... |
| Tempest Stormwind06-03-06, 12:33 AM | There's far more than this. Base classes: Artificer, Warlock (lesser focus), Psionic Artificer (badly done) Prestige Classes (by no means comprehensive): Battlesmith, Runesmith, Ironsoul Forgemaster, Maester, Effigy Master, Master Alchemist, Alchemist Savant, probably a hundred more that I'm not aware of. NPC class: Magewright. All based explicitly on building or making things. If you don't have Eberron, by all means, get it. It's one of the best books ever published by Wizards. |
| Elnsoxo06-03-06, 12:59 AM | Wow, so there are many more out there than I thought. However, that doesn't change the fact that we don't have access to them and are unwilling to purchase any new materials right now. We have most of the Faerun books, all the core books (including DMGII, PHBII, MMI-III), the complete _____ series, libris mortis, races of stone, and unearthed arcana. If any of the classes you listed are within those books (save Warlock, and Battlesmith, and Runesmith) then please point me in the right direction! Also, I would argue that Warlock is hardly based explicitly on making things. What, is Eldrich Blast chopped liver? :P And how is inscribing markings in a piece of stone and passing them around to people crafting? Also, those aren't quite the flavor I'm looking for, which is why I chose to brew my own instead of using one of those. The way I see it, the class has: decent hit die good skills good will save moderate fort save poor reflex save poor magic great crafting ability Also, I made this with the help of the Class Construction Engine (http://rumkin.com/reference/dnd/download/classconstruction.pdf) (warning: pdf). It balances out to be *just* below average. I reiterate from my first post: is this a fair way to handle crafting magic items? Is this class in danger of breaking the game? |

Ultimately, if you want to craft things, buy the Eberron campaign setting. The Arificer is the ultimate crafting class, it REVOLVES around crafting, hell it GIVES YOU XP with which to craft with, thus keeping you from falling behind your adventuring buddies. A couple good PrC's to combine it with are Maester for signifigantly reduced crafting time, or Effigy Master for cheap constructs early on before you have the xp reserves to make proper golems and whatnot. |
