Planning on trying a ranged halfling rogue ranged fighter type and saw the halfling racial substitution levels and level 10 stood out as something fun to mix with hide in plain sight. I was wondering what different ways you could get hide in plain sight.

So far I know rangers, scouts, nightsong infiltrators, and shadowdancers get it. Are there any others?

As far as I know, there is:

Scout
Ranger

Assassin (Dungeon Master's Guide)
Justice of Weald and Woe (Champions of Ruin)
Luiren Marchwarden (Shining South)
Lurking Terror (Libris Mortis)
Nightsong Infiltrator (Complete Adventurer)
Ninja Spy (Oriental Adventures)
Scar Enforcer (Races of Destiny)
Shadowdancer (Dungeon Master's Guide)
Stalker of Kharash (Book of Exalted Deeds)
Wildrunner (Races of the Wild)

The only reason you have to use the sniping mechanic is because you're being observed. Hide in Plain Sight allows you to hide while observed and thus makes sniping fairly worthless.

Ultimately it comes down to where you want to be able to hide while observed.

The Ranger, Justice of Weald and Woe, Nightsong Infiltrator, Scar Enforcer, and Wildrunner can only hide while observed when within natural terrain.

The Luiren Marchwarden can hide while observed when within his March.

The Lurking Terror, an undead Prestige Class, can hide while observed so long as it has cover or concealment.

The Ninja Spy, Shadowdancer, and Stalker of Kharash can hide while being observed under any circumstances.

I would recommend the Shadowdancer. Not only does it grant Hide in Plain Sight at first level, but it also adds the bonus of being able to hide without cover or concealment so long as they are within 10 feet of a shadow that is not their own. However, if you take Shadowdancer you'll never need to or want to use Sniping.

The Shadowcaster from Tome of Magic has a 2nd level mystery called Sight Eclipsed which seems equivalent to hiding in plain sight (you can make hide checks even while being observed, as if you had cover or concealment).

Shadowcasters can also make potions of it, but since it only lasts 1/round per level, you'd want it made as a higher level than the default caster level 3.

For that matter, ToM also has a magic item called the Collar of Umbral Metamorphosis that, for 10 minutes a day (in 1 minute intervals), gives you the dark template, which includes Hide in Plain Sight (along with +10'/turn movement, Darkvision, Resistence to Cold/10, +8 on Hide and +6 on Move Silently), all for the low, low price of 10,800 gp. For twice as much gp there's a version with no time limit.

So you don't even have to multiclass for the capability, assuming your DM allows the ToM.

The Magic of Incarnum book as a prestige class that I've always favored called the Umbral Disciple. It also gains a form of Hide in Plain Sight. By applying at least the two points of essentia (pseudo spell energy) granted by the class, you have constant 20% concealment miss chance and the ability to hide in plain sight. Strangely, this ability is described to be the same as a ranger's. While I assume that it was done so since most expanded sources always reference the PH, it never really made sense to me. I've always DM'ed it as more like the Shadowdancer's ability.

thanks everybody. The reason I wanted hide in plain sight is because I wanted to couple it with sneak attack and within 30ft away you're bound to get noticed. The collar of umbral metamorphosis sounds chainsawsome as I've always wanted to be a shadow creature and dark creatures are the next best thing.

Hi,

Concerning Tome of magic, you say "assuming your DM allows the TOM".

Why ?

It's not 3.5 ?
