I was looking for a list of Classes and PrC that grant Special Mounts. Do you have to be a Paladin?

You could play a small race and get a war dog as an animal companion with druid or ranger. Then use it as a mount. Also there are the 3 variant paladins out of UA.

I believe any class can take the "Wild Cohort" feat, but you should have animal handling to make the fullest use of it.

Benefit: You gain an animal cohort. The animal cohort is generally friendly to you and is willing to follow you and adventure with you. If given proper training, the animal cohort will willingly serve as your mount, guardian, and companion.

Classes with mounts:
Ranger
Druid
Paladin
Healer (Miniatures)

PrCs which grant mount:
Ashworm Dragoon (sandstorm)
Cavalier (Warrior)
Beastmaster (Adventurer)
Blackguard

And many many ma-a-any more, but honestly, I don't want to get off my large ass and check my books (they're a full 5' from where I'm sitting).

I remember the Zhentarim Skymage, the Knight of the Flying Hunt, the Skylord, the Moonsea sentinel, the Aglarondian Griffonrider, the Great Rift Skyrider (?), and a few others granted progressing mounts. And no, the majority do not require you to be a paladin or even have an animal companion/cohort/pet.

There is a class in Books of Exalted Deeds: the beloved of Valarian, which gets an unicorn as a ride. That's a pretty special mount. You dont have to be a paladin, but if you were, you would add your mount bonuses to the buffed up unicorn to create a pretty badass mount. That's a cool character concept, might try to play it, someday....

Crazy PrC.

Well, a wizard with improved familiar can get a gryphon iirc, so it's not such a big change. Beats me how the Moonsea sentinels are supposed to match them, though - with nothing else but shield and m-missile... Valor? That's almost suicidal.

Well, a wizard with improved familiar can get a gryphon iirc, so it's not such a big change. Yes, it is. A griffin is basically a flying "horse" with better attacks. Zhent Skymages can choose a Nightmare, or a Dragon. Go look at some of the abilities of the Nightmare. Astral Projection + Etherealness at will, available as early as level 6?! It's just sick what you can do with that. (http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=9900566&postcount=371) ;)
