I'm currently trying to make a Indianna Jones type character using the old Lasher prestige class from Sword and Fist. The thing is, I really want him to have the Lore class ability but I don't want to take bard, loremaster, or the cloistered cleric variant from Unearthed Arcana. I was wondering if there were any other classes with the lore ability that doesn't focus on spellcasting or... barding.

Also, do you think it would be fair to have Lore as a rogue special ability attainable at 10th level? If not, what if he only got half his rogue levels to the check?

I'm not sure, but from the research I've been doing on the Sage / Sorcerologist (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=574495) (Full Lore use / Supernatural-related Lore only), I suspect Lore isn't really that valuable, power-wise. I think you could probably get it as a special ability, certainly if you only get to apply a fraction of your level to it. But I'm new to the whole classmaking thing.

I assume you want the Lore ability because Indiana Jones was a brainy know-it-all about historical events, wars, ancient cities, etc.

Just give your class Knowledge (History) and (Religion) as class skills. That's all his knowledge was.

Of course, I don't see why you couldn't substitute Lore for one of a rogue's special abilities. The ability is more roleplaying-oriented than anything.

Just my thoughts.

Take a look at the old Royal Explorer 3.0 prestige class (from Song and Silence). It takes a little updating to be 3.5-compatible (it required 8 ranks of Wilderness Lore), but it might fit your needs. Explorer lore worked like bardic knowledge, you got a free exotic weapon proficiency at 1st level (there's your whip!), and there were a few other goodies (skill mastery, track, etc.)

I've been considering updating this class to 3.5 (and beefing it up a bit), but, like many of my ideas, I haven't gotten around to working on it.

I'd allow it, except, I agree with Burningwizard, in that Indiana Jones himself probably just had k(History) and (Religion).
I'd rate most of the rogue's other abilities as stronger than lore. Skill mastery's the only one I'd say that it's stronger than.

Go for it.
