| Ancient History06-08-05, 07:57 AM | Dual-advancement arcane spellcasting, divine spellcasting or psionic manifestation prestige class. Example: Arcane Theurge, a Mystic Theurge-type class where instead of advancing simutaneously in arcane and divine spellcasting, you advance in two arcane spellcasting classes simutaneously. Naturally, to avoid being broken, the rules would have to stipulate that you couldn't apply the two arcane spellcasting advancements each level to the same arcane spellcasting class. Artificer-based prestige classes and variants; where either entry into the prestige class is based on Artificer features, or continues Artificer advancement along the lines of "+1 caster level" Example: Psychic Mechanic, a variant of the Artificer class where the Artificer gains Psionic Item Creation Feats, uses Use Psionic Device checks to mimic powers, and gains Wild Talents to simulate infusions. or Dweomersmith, a 5-level prestige class for artificers of 15th level or above that improves the number of infusions they can use per day as though they gained levels of Artificer, and which gives access to such unusual item creation feats as Psionic Seal, Contingent Spell, Spell Mantle and Craft Scepter. or Mad Doctor, a 10-level prestige class for Artificers of 6th level or above that eschews infusions but allows artificers to gain a number of Graft Flesh feats, even from races they cannot normally take the feat for. A prestige class, probably Eberron-based, which centers on using the oft-neglected skill of Lucid Dreaming to enter the dream-realm, which surprisingly actually sees some use in Eberron. Example: Psychomagus, an arcane-spellcasting based prestige class for those who want to explore Dal Quor, instead of continuing normal progression spellcasters gain a number of Psychomagus spells to cast each day. or Oneiromancer, a class that grants a combination of basic monk unarmed-combat and empty-mind abilities and psionic status (via the Wild Talent feat) A class with a number of useful abilities, every single one of which is an Extraordinary ability rather than Supernatural, Psi-like or Spell-like. Example: Mundane, a monk variant with no supernatural or spell-like abilities, but rather more advanced Extraordinary abilities. |

| Particle_Man06-08-05, 10:20 AM | A prestige class,(snip) or Oneiromancer, a class that grants a combination of basic monk unarmed-combat and empty-mind abilities and psionic status (via the Wild Talent feat) Isn't there a prestige class that lets you "dual advance" in monk and psionic abilities in the XPH? I thought there was, but could be wrong. |
| Zsasz_Diedne06-08-05, 10:37 AM | I don't know that I'd want to see a class that advanced two arcane classes at once, aside from being redundant, the ones that advance arcane and divine simultaneously are more than enough. The Artificer is already right up there with the Druid and Cleric as a straight class powerhouse, it doesn't really need any more than it's being given with each new arcana-type book. And they are capable of things that make Craft Scepter a rather wasted use of feat-envy. Mad Doctor-types are pretty well covered too. Other than that I like the other ideas, and think that if you want to see them: make them! |
| theOne33306-08-05, 10:58 AM | Dual-advancement arcane spellcasting, divine spellcasting or psionic manifestation prestige class. People would scream that it was broken. [sigh] Whiners. Artificer-based prestige classes and variants; where either entry into the prestige class is based on Artificer features, or continues Artificer advancement along the lines of "+1 caster level" They should, but you're right, they won't. Officially, the artificer only exists in Eberron, so anything connected to it won't be present in non-Eberron books. Example: Psychic Mechanic, a variant of the Artificer class where the Artificer gains Psionic Item Creation Feats, uses Use Psionic Device checks to mimic powers, and gains Wild Talents to simulate infusions. If they ever do a book on Sarlona, they might have something like this in it. But they might never do such a book because it would [gasp] contain psionics. I don't get it: they put out a whole new system in one book, revamp it in another, and then they decide to all but ignore it? I mean, wtf? Lords of Madness and the ECS are the only two books to really even touch upon psionics, and even in them, actual mechanical psionic-based material was few and far-between, and covered with disclaimers and ways to convert it to magic that probably equaled in space the material itself. :weep: Dweomersmith, a 5-level prestige class for artificers of 15th level or above that improves the number of infusions they can use per day as though they gained levels of Artificer, and which gives access to such unusual item creation feats as Psionic Seal, Contingent Spell, Spell Mantle and Craft Scepter. Hmm. Maybe that last part, about gaining unusual craft feats...maybe some sort of Ancient Artificer-type thing that learns how to make lost and psionic items, culminating in learning how to make a minor artifact? Maybe in a Xen'drik book? Mad Doctor, a 10-level prestige class for Artificers of 6th level or above that eschews infusions but allows artificers to gain a number of Graft Flesh feats, even from races they cannot normally take the feat for. Take the Fleshmolder PrC and revamp the prerequisites and advancement to fit the artificer. Flavor-wise, it's exactly what you're talking about. A prestige class, probably Eberron-based, which centers on using the oft-neglected skill of Lucid Dreaming to enter the dream-realm, which surprisingly actually sees some use in Eberron. Maybe in an Eberron book on Dal Quor, a core book on the Dream, or a more general book on unusual planes. Example: Psychomagus, an arcane-spellcasting based prestige class for those who want to explore Dal Quor, instead of continuing normal progression spellcasters gain a number of Psychomagus spells to cast each day. This could be something akin to the Cerebrant in that Dragon article, though I forget whether that was a feat, a PrC, or both. If it was a feat, it was pretty damn powerful. Oneiromancer, a class that grants a combination of basic monk unarmed-combat and empty-mind abilities and psionic status (via the Wild Talent feat) I'm pretty sure there's already something like this in the ExPH. [QUOTE]A class with a number of useful abilities, every single one of which is an Extraordinary ability rather than Supernatural, Psi-like or Spell-like.[QUOTE] Such a class would probably be overpowered. Extraordinary abilities aren't subject to SR, dead magic zones, antimagic fields, dispelling, etc. and thus couldn't be too strong or useful without outclassing people like the warlock and monk. Good ideas, overall. Are you going to write up any of them for these boards? If not, do you mind if someone else does? |
| Ancient History06-08-05, 11:54 AM | The point with the Oneiromancer prestige and Psychomagus is to optimize a journey into the dream-realm. Panzy half-assed monk-mages don't count. Truth be told, the only reason for the Mad Doctor is because I enjoy the idea of them "recycling" material for grafts using the Artificer ability. The Dweomersmith is just crunchiness, really. You could plausibly have an Artificer in Eberron learn Craft Contingent spell, even Spell Mantle if the DM is generous. Talk about your adaptability options. You can take apart a shield guardian and ring yourself with spell-wards. As far as the Exceptional goes, I doubt it would be overpowered. Yeah, with Improved Evasion and Slippery Mind et al. they'd be dodging fireballs, death rays, and enchantments left and right. But they'll still buy it going-one-on-one with a straight fighter or brace of elementals. Ah, and here's a gem I forgot: the True Arcanist. Essentially the humanoid version of a beholder mage: you learn spells like a wizard and cast 'em like a sorceror. Hideously overpowered. Every mage's wet dream. |
| glimeral06-08-05, 12:12 PM | A Mad doctor type class came out recently in Lords of Madness... The Fleshwarper masters the art of grafting flesh, and does gain the ability to graft flesh using feats that he would normally be unable to use due to race (such as undead graft, illithid graft etc). The fleshwarper also gains a graft reserve much like an artificers craft reserve, so for an artificer who wants to focus on more gruesome creations, the fleshwarper is a nice detour. Requirements: Heal 4 ranks, Knowledge (arcana) 8 ranks, graft flesh feat (lords of madness), summon familiar. |
| Ancient History06-08-05, 12:23 PM | I know about the Fleshwarper. I am aware of it. That's not the ****ing point. I just liked the concept of the Artificer reycling used bits. The rest of the Fleshwarper features be damned. And your little familiar too. |
| Darkness is good06-08-05, 12:30 PM | I know a class that we'll never see, The Pornomancer :D |
| Niveus Lynx06-08-05, 12:31 PM | Isn't there a prestige class that lets you "dual advance" in monk and psionic abilities in the XPH? I thought there was, but could be wrong. Yep. Fist of Zuoken in XPH, but was Psionic Fist in the original. |
| Niveus Lynx06-08-05, 12:32 PM | I know a class that we'll never see, The Pornomancer :D HEY! I have a dream! *runs off to the Mature Think Tank* ... I can't believe I'm actually thinking of abilities for this class. Fascination...assblast... :P |

| Novacat06-08-05, 12:50 PM | Oneiromancer, a class that grants a combination of basic monk unarmed-combat and empty-mind abilities and psionic status (via the Wild Talent feat) A class with a number of useful abilities, every single one of which is an Extraordinary ability rather than Supernatural, Psi-like or Spell-like. Example: Mundane, a monk variant with no supernatural or spell-like abilities, but rather more advanced Extraordinary abilities. The XPH (page 144) details the Fist of Zouken. "Almost all fists of Zouken are monks who are affiliated with a specific order created to guard centers of psionic learning - usually fortresses in the middle of forbidding wastelands. Naturally, the monks learned from the psionic masters as well, and thus the fists of Zouken were born." |
| Ancient History06-08-05, 02:56 PM | It is a sad and pathetic thing that so many of you cannot read. The focus of the class would be to handle the dangers that occur /in dreams./ And totally to the side of that, the Fist of Zouken sucks ass. |
| theOne33306-08-05, 05:41 PM | It is a sad and pathetic thing that so many of you cannot read. The focus of the class would be to handle the dangers that occur /in dreams./ And totally to the side of that, the Fist of Zouken sucks ass. You're description of the 'oneiromancer' PrC was nearly indentical to the Fist of Zuoken, and didn't mention anything about dreams. But, such a class (or the FoZ) wouldn't have to have crunch to make it a dream-focuses PrC. In your campaign, the Oneiromancers could be a sect of psion-monks dedicated to protecting travelers in Dal Quor, defending the real world from the quori, etc. etc. That could just be flavor, or the duties of a PC member, not necessarily reflected mechanically. People have got to learn that PrC flavor can be taken well beyond what the bland rulebooks tell you. Their fluff can be adapted or completely replaced as necessary with the most creative thing you can imagine. There isn't any rule of D&D that says you have to use the generic, Greyhawk-friendly background. And even if there was, you could just house-rule it away. :D |
