I have noticed that you can divide various prestige classes into several groups: (Example classes taken from the DMG)

Specialization - Focus on improving one ability or a closely related group of abilities at the cost of other abilities. (ex: Thaumaturgist)
Transformation - Permently changes a character into something other than their starting race. (ex: Dragon Disciple)
Alternative Progression - Grants a different group of abilities while still maintaining the "style" of the class. (ex: Horizon Walker when taken by a Ranger)
Coruption - Class is a complete reversal/dark mirror of a class. (ex: Blackguard when compared to a Paladin)
Gestalt - Effectivly merge two base classes together so that they do not lose too much of their power a high levels. (ex: Mystic Thuerge, Eldritch Knight, Arcane Trickster)
