If someone takes a level or more of cleric and then goes paladin, how do their turn undead abilities combine / stack / whatever?

Someone suggested that you would use the ability as the highest of the two classes and the only real gain is that you get to stack the turn attempts from each. (Effectivly doubling your number of attempts per day.)

So is this how it works or does it work some other way? I'm looking for clarification and a place to see an official ruling. A player wants to combo these classes and this is the big question that came up. If there is anything I might have forgotten, please let me know...there could be other "class combo" issues we didn't forsee.

You add all the turn undead attempts together. It stacks, and it specifically says so.

They are wrong.

Besides Verelor's glaring lack of any supporting material for his argument, he is correct. On a quick search of the SRD, I didn't find any evidence either way, but it makes sense to allow them to stack.

Remember that the Paladin gets an effective -3 to his class level for determining Turning... the levels won't start stacking until Paladin4, and even then you'll be down 3 levels.

The turn attempts stack, but do you turn as cleric for half and paladin as the other or just use the better of the two for all turn attempts?

Tu4rning level is equal to Cleric + Paladin level (-3). So a cleric 1 + Paladin 4 )-3=1), 1+ 1= 2 so he turns undead as if Level 2.

A level 5 Cleric + Paladin 15 (-3=12)=5 +12 turns undead=17 level turning ability.

Attempts + level stack

The RAW are a little unclear on the issue. My interpretation would be that whether the character has two base classes that grant turn undead, or if the character takes a prestige class that has turn undead, it would work the same way.

That is to say, you can turn undead 3 times + your Charisma modifier per day. That's not "3 + Cha per class that grants it." But the effective turning levels would stack.

As an example, look at Complete Divine page 58 for the sample Sacred Exorcist. The character is a Cleric of Pelor 7/Sacred Exorcist 3. She can turn undead 4 times per day (Charisma 12).

Another example from the same book on page 71, the sample Ur-Priest. The character is a cleric 4/rogue 1/ur-priest 4. He can rebuke undead 2 times per day (Charisma 8).

I don't think that it matters whether the classes granting turn or rebuke undead are base classes or prestige. If two or more classes grant turn undead, the attempts are 3 + Cha modifier total, and the effective turning levels stack.

That's how I read it, and Complete Divine is my evidence.

That always seemed the most logical to me...although I would like it to be different (2*(3+5)=16 turn attempts ! whoohoo!).
