Cleric Alignment and Deity Alignment [Archive] - Wizards Community

Let's say I have a LG cleric (and he can't be any other alignment), can he worship a deity like Fharlanghn, which is stated as: N (NG)? Does the (NG) count as NG? Or is he out of luck?

If you want this alignment, your diety must be NG, LN or LG.

11-11-06, 12:32 AM The alignment in parenthesis is the most common (with the exception of the deity's own alignment) for their followers.

So to take your example of Fharlanghn, it means that Neutral Good followers of Fharlanghn are more common than Lawful Neutral, Chaotic Neutral, or Neutral Evil followers of Fharlanghn, but Fharlanghn himself is still True Neutral.

Some deities specifically make alignment exceptions for their worshippers, allowing an unconvnetional alignment choice. The example that comes immediately to mind is Mystra in the FR, who is NG but who allows LN worshippers for legacy reasons.

In some settings your alignment does not need to match your deity, but your ethos still needs to match your deity. Of the official settings, Eberron is like this. (However, since you bring up a Greyhawk deity, I'd assume that you're not playing in Eberron.)
