Cleric Domains- For non-clerics? [Archive] - Wizards Community

08-20-06, 04:30 PM In the complete divine it is possible for a non-cleric to gain access to a domain. But how does that domain power work when grainted to a non-cleric?
A player in my party wants to use the Archivist from hero's of horror and wants to gain the contemplaitive PRC to Complete divine to gain the Magic Domain. What is his cleric level for using the domain power? 1 or is it fare to let him use his archivist level?

08-20-06, 06:01 PM Do you refer to the feat 'Arcane Disciple'? It's only for arcane casters, as the name says.

Or did I miss something?

I would allow him to use his archivist level.

08-20-06, 08:36 PM I presume the Archivist casts Divine spells so it can qualify for the Contemplative.

For them gaining a Domain gives them one new domain slot to fill just like a cleric would. I'd say your cleric level for Domain Powers would equal your divine caster level. If that isn't right I'd expect to only count actual cleric levels.

08-20-06, 08:52 PM The archivist is a divine caster... although I just don't tie the archivist and the contemplative as philosophies: the first looks for wisdom without (scrolls and the like), the second within. Still, it is, generally, allowed.

I think bonus domains for divine spellcasters include a bonus spell slot for domain magic (as for clerics). For arcanist it merely makes the spells learnable (kind of a bad joke if you are a sorcerer...) .

There is nothing in Complete Divine that says that anyone gaining extra domains would gain also effective cleric levels for their use. Domain powers that do not depend on level work fine, but those that are level dependent do not seem to work at all.
( Kind DM might allow "minimum effective cleric level of" 1 to activate these powers. This would not stack with any real cleric levels. )

domains are class features, and any level-based variables they
have depend on your level in the class that gives you access to
the domain."

So in the Archivist to Contemplative scenario, from the ruling above, you'd use your levels in Contemplative to determine the domain powers. Magic domain powers would be 1/2 Contemplative levels for effective Wizard level to activate the items.
