I would like to tweak the cleric so that they can spontaneously convert any prepared spell into a domain spell (like they can with cure or inflict spells currently).

Would an adequate trade-off be the loss of spontaneous cure/inflict conversion as well as the loss of the extra domain spell per day? Or would they have to jettison more in order for that to be balanced?

PHB2 has something like this already. It's the ability to spontaneously convert spells into the spells from any one domain but you must give up your ability to spontaneously convert to inflict/cure spells as a tradeoff. That is the only negative to this option so you shouldn't feel like you are really overpowered or anything. In fact, the option also states you can fill domain slots with inflict/cure spells (depending on which type of energy you channel) as well.

First: definately lose spontaneous heal/inflict. IF you want that, go with Healing as a domain.

Secondly, in practice, losing the domain slot is a good balance for allowing clerics to spontaneously cast things like Invisibility, Fireball, and Meteor Swarm.
